For those that don't know: In olden days you always took tea with the cream as you didn't want to etch the hosts china. Boiling water would etch the china. You could always tell a person class by the cream going in the cup first then the tea. The cream in the cup first would cool the hot water enough to not etch their china. Even if you did not normally take cream you did in this case anyway so as not to be rude. Your spoon was after use put on your saucer and your pinky goes out so as to be used as a stop for your cup so you don't bang you cup on your saucer which again is rude. Your cup sat on your pinky and only looked like it was on your saucer. Banging your cup was never allowed. Also, if you took a cookie it was layed on your saucer with the cup on it in one hand first, you wait a moment, then picked up the cookie from your saucer and took one small bite then put it back on your saucer. Tea etiquette showed real class and taste. You could hobnob with anyone if you knew proper tea etiquette. Loads of fun. Even children were taught this.

@@aj32384 Thank you so much for your very astute observations about people's politeness in the past and the reason for their actions . I imagine that their finest teacups and teapots could be considered heirlooms, hence, a guest would be extra careful in handling them. I do believe that there are many people today who would do the same.🌺

@@bpe9578 This is interesting, because when I first spent a fair amount of time in Germany, some years ago, I was astonished to see a napkin separating the cup from the saucer in many places, and this was new to me, and I do this in my own home now. I never see it in America.

When I was very young, in the single digits somewhere, I got sick and had to stay home from school. My mom made me breakfast, but not like she usually did. She had taken the toast, trimmed of crusts and cut them into perfect little squares. It was beautiful and it stuck with me. Growing up the crusts were never trimmed off of anything. That was my first little step into the world of teatime. I am not english but to me afternoon tea is precious and to be celebrated. Thanks so much for your beautiful videos.

Another way to set flowers in an arrangement is to use scotch tape instead of the wire. Criss cross the scotch tape over the mouth of the vase or flower pot. It should look like the top of a apple pie “checkered.” Then just place flowers in open areas to fit your design. I think you might like this technique.

The best tip you gave was to not focus on rules. Guests should never feel inadequate or inappropriate at the event in someones home. Being together, sharing good conversation with friends, and making new acquaintances is what the day should be about. Loved all your tips. When I was in college, I built an entire presentation around tea, using Great Expectations, for my project. Everything happened around tea. I served sandwiches, English tea, and history. Everyone had to bring a cup and we’re served food on quality paper plates. My mom helped me in the “kitchen “ and we used her antique bone China for the Professor’s table. I even gave away tea that was gifted to me for answering questions. It did not go smoothly as planned. Although there were only 4 people on the project, and 3 worked their buns off, one ROYALLY, screwed it up. I’ve found this to be a fact of life.

I love your comment Lynda. I miss letter writing! And long phone conversations instead of this weirdo 'social anxiety' everyone has where they pray that nobody picks up and they can get away with leaving a voicemail, or just tapping out short messages/emails. So sad! I have difficulty writing short comments online too, which anybody familar with my user name would instantly know ;D. But the attention span of people these days...what has caused this erosion and deformation I wonder?! My addition to your comment would also be that vases are a massively underrated gift; people are always giving flowers of all sorts but never consider if the person has adequate display vessels for these fragrant gifts. I always recommend people give the gift of practical vases of all proportions. And candles as gifts, where do you stand, where does Nicholas stand on this? They're poo-pooed as being basic, unimaginative and slightly passe as gifts but if someone has expensive and very refined tastes then YES PLEASE! I can think of nothing more welcome than a Cire Trudon candle.

Well done! It's so relaxing to watch you create a tea party and understand the proper protocols. I especially like that you have fresh cut flowers frequently in your home. For those who cannot afford flowers (or have allergies), I'm wondering if you include how to incorporate plants into your decor. I noticed a potted ranunculus on your bookshelf behind you. It adds a wonderful pop of color and lasts longer than cut flowers. There are many other plants that are easy to care for that help warm up a room as well. Placing them properly in the room to give it balance and flow is also important. Just an idea!! 🌸🌸🌿🌿

This video was magnificent from beginning to end Nicolas! I adore how aesthetically pleasing and relaxing your videos are and they’re the perfect way to wind down after a hectic day. Your afternoon tea and tips were a delight and incredibly easy to follow. I also very much appreciate the proper etiquette in regards to conversation starters. I’ve been meaning to watch Bridgerton as I hear it’s an absolutely divine series to get lost in. You finally sold me so thank you!! Enjoy your weekend and I hope it’s a relaxing one!

I love your tip about making someone feel they are the most fascinating person in the room and the realisation that everyone is in their own way, that's great insight indeed, thank you.

Nicholas, I gotta tell you.. you nailed it with this botanical tea! Me and my friend are having your Rose Petal Black Tea and I made strawberry scones to go with it-the tea is superb quality. The depth of the black tea marries well with the rose.

I find people like to talk about themselves so i ask casual questions. The trick is to always be interested and respond to what they say. I learnt this on cruises.

Everything is beautiful! I have a tiered stand but usually only use it at Christmas to display cookies. Next time I serve tea, I will use it and think of your lovely space!
