How To Look Younger Than Your Age Naturally - Anti Aging
Did you know that going to space drastically slows down the aging process?
There are other factors that we can’t control, like genetics. Then you have things that affect the aging process that we can control, like the amount of sun exposure, stress, smoking, drugs, and alcohol, as well as the amount of exercise and sleep you get. But one of the biggest things that age you is SUGAR.
The cell is the simplest form of life, and we’re made of tens of trillion cells. To stay alive, the cell has to have energy. Usually, that entails burning glucose, which any cell can do.
When glucose is inside a cell, it's broken down in glycolysis. Alternatively, if the mitochondria are overwhelmed, pyruvic acid is diverted to go down the de novo lipogenesis (DNL) pathway, which converts sugar into fat. In this pathway, the pyruvic acid is turned into a fatty acid called palmitic acid, which is attached to a glycerol molecule and shipped out of the liver cell as a triglyceride molecule.
It’s the triglyceride molecule deposited in fat cells throughout the body. The two energy pathways, especially inside the mitochondria, continuously release by-products called oxygen free radicals that are toxic to the cell. But your cells do their best to detoxify them; otherwise, it will be the cell's death.
Specifically, it’s the peroxisome of the cell which releases its antioxidants, which are basically the antidote to those toxins.
Do you ever wonder why we get wrinkles as we age?
Or why do we get cataracts and atherosclerosis?
Yes, it's the aging process, but specifically, at the biochemical and cellular level inside your body, it results from glycation.
It's basically the human body’s version of carmelizing, or browning, occurring in all of our cells. The only way it stops, though, is if we die. But it can be slowed down. The slower the glycation, the slower you age. Glycation occurs when sugar, either glucose or fructose, combines with the amino acid component of protein. When they attach, the protein becomes stiffer. Most of these damaged proteins end up being swept away by the garbage man of the cell. But the garbage man isn’t perfect at his job, especially when he is overwhelmed with too much garbage.
So what happens?
You’re left with AGEs, or advanced glycation end products, which impair cellular function and ultimately age you quicker. It’s also to say that you’ll be healthier for longer. And part of this process depends on if the sugar we’re dealing with is glucose or fructose.
Glucose and fructose are structurally similar, both being monosaccharides, and both are found in dietary sugar (for example, sucrose in fruit, high-fructose corn syrup in a lot of processed food, even brown sugar, honey, agave, and maple syrup).
But here’s the thing. Fructose acts much faster in the glycation process than glucose, 7 times faster! So at least in this sense, sugar is worse than starch. And sugar in the form of fructose is worse than glucose. Collagen is the main extracellular protein in the body, meaning it resides outside cells. It’s the major component of connective tissues, like skin, tendons, and cartilage.
Because it's so prominent, has a long half-life, and is accessible to the glucose that floats around in our bloodstream, it’s the perfect setup for glucose and fructose to attach to it. This increases collagen stiffness. The decrease in flexibility is a result of AGE-mediated collagen cross-links. This occurs not just in the skin but also in the aorta.
When you look at tissue samples from insulin-dependent diabetic patients, they have increased AGE-modified collagen due to chronological age. Still, the observed levels were comparable to normal individuals twice as old as those of diabetic patients.
So if you want to slow this process down, the simple answer is to reduce sugar intake, especially when it comes to fructose. Generally speaking, processed foods have the most added sugar, and the most added sugar is fructose. The worst culprits are candy, pies, cookies, pastries, cakes, doughnuts, ice cream, sugar-sweetened drinks like soda, juice, and any syrup, including lattes. But there are also many “hidden” added sugar in things like cereal, yogurt, salad dressings, and other condiments like ketchup and BBQ sauce.

Quick search on the net...possible antidote to fructose: glycine and omega-3 fish. Sun light exposure is double edge sord. UV light speeding up aging, so better to get vitamin D from suplements...red light and IR light reversing aging. In order to avoid damaging effect of sun light be in open until 9AM, and after 3 pm. You can use artificial red light and IR irradiation to slow down skin aging.

At a previous job, I asked a 96 y.o. woman what her secret was (she looked and acted in her 70s). She said, "I avoid sugar." Feb 2020, I happened to run into her at the grocery store, she said, "Can you believe it, I'm turning 103 in April." She often crosses my mind and had planned on visiting her but the lockdown stopped that

Besides overexposure to the Sun, and excessive drinking and smoking, I think genetics plays the largest role in aging. I only recently started to reduce my sugar intake. And people always thought I was 10-15 yrs younger than my actual age. As a male at age 70, I still have most of my natural dirty blonde hair and a few facial wrinkles, except for my hands which were often exposed to the sun while working outdoors.

I work 70-80 hours in the sun, all summer for 32 years now. I don't drink pop (soda), very little alcohol, and take alternately luke-warm and cold showers, never hot! I also cook most of my own food and garden as much as possible. I'm in my 50's and turn down women in their early 20's and college girls constantly. I've known people in my own family who got skin cancer, despite years of using sunscreen. Vitamin D3 production offsets sun exposure, as long as you don't strip off your natural sunscreen through hot showers.

Fruits have antioxidants in them and fiber so it's a slow release form of fructose. It's worse if you take the fructose out of fruit where it becomes toxic

So increasing the mitochondrial quantity and Acetyl-CoA metabolism would prevent DNL. So ultimately diet alone wouldn't do but leading an active lifestyle would be key. Steric hindrance of furanose would contribute to free radicals . . . Yet higher mitochondrial quantity would increase ETC activity, thus lowering ROS and increasing ATP.

Sadly, I have become highly resistant to diet vs. life span arguments. I know that some may actually be important, but the medical profession's pundits-for-cash-lot have caused this. I take these all as sketchy, because I don't know who to believe. All the book sellers have MD after their name and wear white coats in videos. If I listened to them all, over my just under 80 years, I wouldn't eat sugar, fat, fructose, lactose, bread, milk, cheese, sandwich meat, beef, chicken skin, or drink wine or soda, not cook in most pans, not use plastic bags, no Tupperware, no MSG, no rice, few eggs, and no grilled meat or toast. And that's just the start of the list. We need to move past the 'food pyramid' to the food balloon, where anything with nourishment is out of reach for humankind. Are there any nuts and berries that are safe? [Not if you read the books or watch KZbin.]

To simplify, make the bulk of your diet unprocessed as you can, appropriate to your calorie needs. Get plenty of sleep, sunlight and exercise....job done. Now where is my white coat. Other things you can do... cultivate friendships and relationships, be useful to your local community i.e. be useful, be in a relationship/friendship, be happy. As humans, we are under genetic pressure to do these things. If you circumvent any of them, it creates mental and physical stress.

Dr Hansen: it's too late for me, I have 3 small calcium plaque spots in my coronary arteries. My aorta is larger than it should be. I dont know why. So i have drastically cut back on all forms of sugar intake but i do cheat on birthday celebrations and holidays. I am taking 10 mg statin to stabilize the plaques so they dont dislodge to cause a life threatening stroke. I agree: always read the label when you buy your groceries coupled with at least 150 minutes of exercise/week can can help us all live long and prosper.

Look into vitamin K2 and the other vitamins/nutrients/minerals that go with it. K2 works to help direct calcium to the hard tissues and out of the soft tissues as it should be. There are videos of people having cleaned up their arteries by eating/taking it as you should.

You have to read labels. I like to mix some vanilla yogurt with granola for breakfast, and the brands at the store had anywhere from 27g added to only 2g. If you read the labels it doesn't always make it easier (they hide it, break it into several component names), but you can always look to see what the bottom line is under the summery under the number of carbs

I'm late 40s and have no crows feet or obvious wrinkles. I may have a case of "black don't crack" but I think the key is low sun exposure. I wear a large hat. I use oil like grapeseed oil to WASH my face, then rinse then put some more oil. No face creams or astringents or wipes. Then I use a thin layer of foundation, just to even out the skin tone, not gobs and gobs of different stuff like concealers and whatnot. Sleep on a satin pillow case. Don't wash your face too much or too often. Skip some days. I do eat some sweets but keep it low. I eat a plant based diet high in veggies and fruits and lots of fiber. Some fish, but no red meat or dairy.

@@S_M_20117 I just use a soft washcloth, wet it with HOT water and put enough oil on it so it's smooth on my skin. And gently scrub in circles. That will wash off any foundation on your face. And I never get any acne. These days I use plain Vaseline to apply on my face after washing. That keeps your skin moisturized. I use it over all my body instead of lotion.

Dr. Hansen, what happens to people that exercise a lot, is sugar still as bad? The sugar still has to be converted to ATP, this process will still produce oxygen free radicals.. but if the ATP is used up, does this avoid the converting to fat pathway? And what about the sugar attaching to the protein and stiffening it? Will this be avoided too? Sorry for my simplistic understanding.
