I thought you needed oils and lye to make siponification for base. Are you taking scrap pieces of soaps and making new soap idgi. I want to try to make pretty soap with smells i pick.

Hey Diane, Not to get too into the process of making soap, but you have to have a base/alkali chemical to make it. So whether you use lye or some other alkali, you are still using an alkali. If done properly, there should be no lye left in the final chemical reaction.

I wish I still had pics of an m&p soap I did in a silicone brownie mold and a golf ball mold. It was really cool. I called it tee box soap and scented it with a fresh mown grass scent.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't this basically melting down small waste pieces of soap, and a big block of unscented, premade, soap, and adding your own scents and colors and then molding it into smaller soaps? It's perfect for people who don't want to work directly with the lye or any other chemical because that part's already been done for them. A great way to help beginners, btw. :-) By having that part done for them, they can concentrate on just melting, adding scents and colors, and pouring into shapes. Once they get more confidant, then they can try making soap from scratch which requires lye or sodium hydroxide.

Exactly.... those small pieces of soap has lye in it already. All she did was chop it up and remolded it. You CANNOT make soap without lye. Extremely misleading video.

Let me clarify something here, if you make soap, there should be no lye left in it, only slight excess of the oils originally. And yes, this video should not be titled “….without lye”, more accurately it should be titled “…without the need to handle lye”. Very miss leading.

It turns into something else, soap and glycerin essentially, the dangers of lye are only if you don't do it right, so this is why they make melt and pour soap so we don't have to take the chance of getting chemical burns

if I understand it correctly, the benefit from using melt and pour is that you don’t have to wait for the soap to cure and you can use it as soon at it hardens?

@@lyzamangapot112 You can still cure even as a M&P. I find that M&P soap has a lot of humidity which is why its soft and 'melts' fast. You can leave M&P soap out like people who use tallow or lard.

As a Tip, you should put your Mica in a cup and mix in some rubbing alcohol then mix then place in your soap

Melt and pour soap still contains Lye but the Stephenson Brand you have there contains 3/4 less Lye then Cold / Hot Process Soaps. I should know this as iv been making & Selling Assorted Organic Melt & Pour Soaps In my Business for 6.5yrs here in Australia

Elisabeth D, the wire cutter she normally uses isn’t meant for melt and pour soap. Only cold process soap. Melt and pour soap has already saponified and is a harder bar and will break the wires on the cutter.

Soap does not contain lye, but you can make soap without it. Through the saponification process, all lye is expelled. It does not become so until that happens.

This is false information. Melt and pour soap is made with lye. All soaps are and the lye is broken down. Your title should say making soap without the worries of handling lye.

Nephlite84 - She is making melt and pour soap loaves. They do not require the crafter to use lye directly. She makes plenty of cold and hot process soaps. She's just cleaning out extra embeds and scraps so she can make room and take a break for the summer. Don't be a "know it all" when you don't know her circumstances. She has fibromyalgia which is why she's taking a break.
