Fear is about that which does not exist. Brilliant! So if we learn to live in the moment and not dwell on the future and that which does not exist, we can be fearless 😊

Love off-set Fear. I get it now. 1 John 4:18 I just realize my sin(fear) @ the age of 41. I was the kid that got pick on all my school life ashame of how I look ashame practically about everything. Just today I was asking God to reveal to me his love. Cause I wanted to know. I didn't have a start to begin with but I knew it existed. I was watching this anime call jujutsu kaisen ep 9 (17:35) I recommend this series. The dialog was base off of what are cures. And cures derived from the fear we have. And I seen this in the word of God once. 1 John 4:18. I can honestly say I now know what I have been battling for almost 25yrs now. FEAR hides in the shadows and goes unrecognize if not captured correctly. I hope you guys overcome this. It truly rob you of life itself.

Love Sadhguru but this little life lesson does not make a lot of sense. I'll circle back to the reason why in a second but first I have to note how disturbingly illustrative the reactions here in the comment section are of the fact that lots and lots of people don't have critical thinking skills. For example: as I type this, the comment underneath me says, in praise of the video message, "Fear is about that which does not exist. Brilliant!." It's not brilliant...it's the dictionary definition of fear. Are people really that impressed by someone stating the obvious just because of who that person is? Much of Sadhguru's wisdom is golden, but this bit about overcoming fear is not. When people just agree with everything someone says without giving their own brain a crack at it, well...that's how cults begin. Watch the video again people, think about what he's saying and try to figure out the fallacy yourself. If you're impatient, keep reading... Now, as far as where Sadhguru's argument fails, you can't just tell people that they can overcome fear by living in the now. That's just silly. If I don't want to walk through a jungle because I might get attacked by a tiger, that is justifiable because things like that happen all the time--the possibility exists in my mind, yes, but it is based on stories I have heard and my mind has constructed a mechanism (fear of walking throught the jungle) to avoid the possibility of getting eaten by a tiger. If I convince myself that it is *unlikely* and decide to go ahead and take the risk by walking through the jungle, I will still have a fear--probably an even greater fear--of getting attacked by a tiger. That is justifiable, it's not something you can dismiss because it is not happening in the now. In other words, trying to convince myself that the fear is not valid because I am not actually getting attacked doesn't help because it doesn't eliminate the real-world threat. If I do get attacked by a tiger, am I experiencing fear at that time? No, I am reacting instinctively to survive. Fear does not exist in moments of crisis, it exists BEFORE moments of crisis. You can't "fear" something that is already happening, you can only fear something that hasn't happened. BY DEFINITION! Now, obviously some situations we put ourselves into can have a negative outcome *or* positive outcome. In a case like that we have to weigh the fear vs. the potential reward. But the fear is still justifiable. "If I ask her out, she might say no which will embarrass me but she might also say yes." That is a fear where the potential upside far outweighs the downside. "Those girls I just met are skinny-dipping at night in choppy water. If I dive in I might drown but if I don't I will miss out on a great time." Here, the fear is clearly your common sense protecting you; and YES it is EXACTLY because of the reasons Sadhguru said: it is based on memory [past knowledge of people drowning in rough seas] and imagination [future possibility of it happening to you]. But the fact that you're not drowning right now doesn't invalidate the fear. Neither can you overcome it by saying to yourself, "let me just focus on the now when I am standing on the beach not drowning and continue focusing on the now as I wade in and everything will be fine." NO! Fear exists for a reason--to protect us. That all aside, obviously a lot of people have what Tony Robbins calls "limiting beliefs" which are fears of self-betterment that hold them back in life. And while these fears are still real ("If I start a business, I might fail and lose thousands," or, "I want to start a family but I'm not sure that I have what it takes to be a parent."), these are the kind of fears that can be overcome (if it makes sense to do so). Not by wishing them away or "living in the now". But by weighing pros vs. cons, a lot of self-talk, and most importantly taking your fear seriously. Using my example above, someone who wants to start a bakery but does not know how to bake (this happens a lot more than you would think) would benefit from the fear and decide against the plan--fear can be a good thing. Fear is an important function of the subconscious which is there to protect us by making us stop and think--sometimes for a minute, sometimes for months--before moving forward.

Even though you are probably joking, your response is the perfect example of why this video is hogwash. Fear is based on humans projecting past experience into the future. That's not a *bad* thing, that's a *good* thing. Saying to yourself "I am living in the now and right now I am not being bitten" does not remove the possibility of a hedgehog biting you in the future. Your comment is 100% more brilliant than this video. And before anyone asks, no I am not saying that he should live in fear of his groundhog. But the fear should definitely stay in place until the groundhog can be tamed or he finds a way to touch it without being bitten. Then he can eliminate the fear from his life. (and again, I realize he was probably kidding but for those of you reading this, please extrapolate my advice about groundhog bites to your own fears in life--in other words, don't let go of your fear unless you have reasonably convinced yourself that the potential for harm has been eliminated or is mitigated by the possibility of gain)
