Okay, going through the comments, I'm actually so relieved that other people have this phobia! I've had this fear ever since I was about 4, and lots of people have made fun of me for it. This video helped, but I still hate balloons in general.

I have globophobia ever since I was a child. I'm quite sensitive to loud noises so people would make fun of me for it, and make me cry. I try to avoid birthday parties or any events with balloons. It's odd because when a balloon pops unexpectedly or suddenly without me seeing it, I don't react as badly, but when the balloon is there or someone is playing with it/it looks like it's going to pop, the suspense for me makes me stressed and panic. I agree with the other comments, it's really that moment of waiting for the balloon to pop that triggers my globophobia. I've gotten a bit better over the years, going to parties where balloons are decorated on the walls or high up, but I get very stressed when they are on the ground and little children are squeezing them. Even the smell of the rubber balloons triggers me. I don't mind foil balloons as I know people won't pop them (usually the expensive ones you buy in shops).

Since I was a toddler until now, I suffered from this phobia. Whenever I went to a friend's birthday party there would usually be balloons, and I felt I didn't fit in all the time because I would be the one to usually start crying or hiding myself in a bathroom when in the presence of a balloon, some people even thought I was weird because of it, I even thought I was weird, I thought I was an outcast due to the fact that I cover my ears when I hear a balloon pop and no one else did. I have improved a little bit though, I don't cry whenever I see balloons or when I hear them pop, I somehow learnt to hide the fact that I have the fear. I do hope that one day I get over my fear and be like everyone else

I have suffered from this throughout my life and now as a Mum of 3 small children I find it debilitating. The low point was yesterday at a 4 year old’s party where I was reduced to tears because children were running around chasing each other with balloons. A video about systematic desensitisation for globophobia would be really helpful thank you.

I have a fear with balloons when I was kid and get worst and when I get older. And when my coworker poop balloon right in my face. I always wish to get rid of this phobia coz I missed all of important occasions where balloon is around. If a grocery store or a mall have some balloons i won't come in because it's making me super stress and my heartbeat so fast and I felt like I'm gonna throw up and I feel super dizzy. It's kinda sad because people don't understand and they thought it's fun to scare someone with phobia . Sometimes other people think I'm faking it and yeah I wish it wasn't real because it's very hard to deal it's really affecting my life.

This sadly is a very common story in globophobia. Where siblings and friends should be helping people overcome their fear of balloons, they mock them and torment them instead which makes the phobia worse. It is possible to overcome the phobia though with CBT or a good hypnotherapist.

To me, the fear of popping is definitely a part of it; but it's more than just that. I simply have a strong revulsion to everything about balloons; the shape, the texture; everything. I'm actually less bothered by the type of long balloons used to make animal shapes than the more common round balloons. Very very odd.

I'm 14 years old and I have this phobia. I don't know where did it staterd, but I remember when i was a children in the kindergarten I would run 50kg away from a Ballon, even though it didn't popped up. My classmates and teachers didn't help me either, my classmates always popped Ballons close to my hears, I imagine they could even push me to a pool full of ballons on purpose. I was very bullied by that, my classmates always thought I was a weird girl because I was always silent, was terrible in P.E and oblivious, was globophobic. (still is) My teachers didn't did anything about it, most of my teachers in the kindergarten were kind of douchebags to be honest, they never did anything about it and they couldn't even teach sometimes. Because of that, when I went to a school and there's an event with ballons I try to hide my fear as possible as I can, normally hidden in the restroom. And it's starting annoing people around me, specifically my mother and father.

Turned out I had overly sensitive ears! So that turned into trauma which paired with my anxiety to start the golobophobia. Nowadays I can be around balloons and am totally ok with foil balloons but you best bet that if someone is holding a latex balloon besides me I will be stating them down like I'm in an old western movie.

Its good that you can hold the balloon. To overcome the fear of the bursting get someone else to burst it at a distance, then over a few days or weeks burst it closer. This will help you desensitise. Watch your body language though. Try not to let it look like the balloon is a danger or it will reinforce the fear.

I honestly don't know if I fall under this category. Yes, I have a fear of balls and balloons, but not because I'm scared of them popping, but because I'm scared of the long time overtime deflation process that everything that has air in it goes through. I don't like it when balls and balloons get the con caves in them. Is there a fear for that. I'm also afraid of the hissing sound of the air coming out of a ball or balloon that is deflating either naturally, or because it's been punctured. I've had experiences in my life were balls that I have cherished have been punctured by various trees or different things, so perhaps that was a major contributor. Does anyone have any thought on this?

Im not aware of a name for this but there are many phobias and variants of each. The principles for the cause and the treatment are the same though. Any emotional distress in childhood that is not naturally extinguished or is reinforced can develop into a phobia. Any therapy that involves desensitisation can reverse the fear.

I'm a fellow individual who is afraid of balloons and clowns. This all started when I was seven years old, I attended a Halloween party with my friends, the theme was "haunted circus", so, of course, the haunted house was a circus tent. I was walking through the circus tent, and then next to me I saw a clown bursting balloons one by one in my face. I ran right out the haunted house, and I ran across the parking lot without even looking for cars. I was also screaming and crying, and my friends kept telling me to stop making so much noise, but I couldn't help it. This phobia is so bad that every time I go to a party or hang out with friends, I have to tell the organizers to not lay out balloons. Globophobia is paralyzing and debilitating, and if you think I'm exaggerating about this fear I want everybody who reads this comment to watch a clip of a woman named Yvonne from a phobia episode on the Maury Povich show. The show was called, "My Fear of Mustard and Pickles Is Ruining My Life!" (the other guests were afraid of birds, mustard, pickles, and dogs), and you'll NEVER, EVER see the look of sheer terror the way you see on these phobia episodes. Hi my fear of balloons started when I was about 4 or 5 when my so called friend popped a balloon in my face! As I got older and went to more birthday parties I missed loads of party’s & my mum had to tell the parents of the child about my fear, and if I got any party bags and there were any balloons I couldn’t even touch them & she would have to cut them up before I felt safe. I remember once being at my uncles birthday party which was in a pub and at the end of the evening them popping all the balloons in the pub which for me sent me into panic mode and had to escape to get away! If I was out anywhere I was allways wary about balloons popping until one day when I was older trying to relax when I was near balloons which helped with the anxiety but they still made me jump if they were popped. I remember one day visiting a relatives house and they had inflatable boats or other inflatables and I overheard them saying that I wouldn’t like it because they were similar to balloons which I now know is not true, so when I got home after a while I started collecting inflatables which I felt safe around knowing they would not pop. One day I tried to overcome my inflatables phobia and got some balloons from somewhere at first I couldn’t pick one up and could not stop shaking from the fear of the unknown but as my confidence increased I gradually became more confident around balloons. Yet still to this day I still can’t brake the fear of popping balloons even though I turned my globophobia into a fetish.

I loved balloons when i was a child but this one moment i started hated them, i was playing with a balloon and i am having fun with it when it poped i am traumatized of the unpredicted sound, and it hurts bc it also hit my foot, the balloon was big and it hurted so much that i started crying. I still dont like balloons tho but thanks for the advice
