In this video, Instructor Steve will show you how to prevent your puppy from biting you. In our last puppy biting video, we showed you how to quickly teach your puppy that biting isn't acceptable behavior. Today, we will talk about teaching your puppy to show a little more restraint when it comes to using their sharp little teeth on skin. This video will add a tool to your tool belt so you can teach your puppy to have a little more self-control, while having fun and burning off some puppy energy! It's a great step in teaching your puppy that you are someone worth listening to. It's also something that's absolutely necessary for your puppy to understand. With all of our training, the 3 things you need to ensure is that you're clear, consistent and fair. With a little work and some good information, your puppy can learn that biting people is never okay.

There is actually 3 stage in this approach. The holding of collar while giving the reward is the first exercise. This alone can take days for puppy to respond consistently. Secon

I'm so happy to see this video; my nine week old puppy, whom I've had for one week(!) is getting so bad with biting! He comes at us with mouth wide open, teeth ready to go. I watched this yesterday, so I tried to make her settle with the collar grab, hand against cheek, it was like she was mad or panicked, it was a a real struggle to get her to settle. Finally, with her under my arm she sort of settled, then was all set to start again!

Great video. I recently rescued a 4-year-old stray who thinks he is still a puppy in many respects. I have only had him 3 1/2 weeks, but he has really come a long way. The biggest achievements so far are eliminating his fear of elevators (1.5 weeks and really GOOD treats), housebreaking him 90% of the time, and learning his name and to come when called most of the time. He is high-energy and loves to play, but calming him down and getting him NOT to bite me in the process are another issue. I have started to work on the collar hold while giving him treats, but I only started doing that a couple of days ago. I really like the "Settle" aspect you introduce after that! I will be incorporating these steps this weekend. Thank yoU!

nice video. it's so important to teach puppy owners that if they work on these issues now, they are a lot less likely to developed destructive behaviors as adults. it's all about busting your back for that first year and especially the first 2 months you have them!

Another quality video!! My oldest was a pretty bad bitter as we got him at 11 weeks so he had some habits already. We ended up giving him a toy so his mouth was occupied with something else whenever someone came home or when he got too excited. That helped with the immediate OMG THEY ARE HOME excitement, then we would put him into a sit before we sat down which built more into him learning restraint. Then we released him from the sit and gave him all the love he wanted. Now a year and a half later when we come home he will frantically run around sniffing looking for a toy even though he doesn't bite anymore. Once he has it he comes running for his we are back home love. :) He also does the same thing in the mornings when we wake up, gets a toy and has a full butt wag going on.

That’s a great redirection, SD Cruiser! We get a similar response when we raise our arms like-> 🤷‍♂️. We’ve got to be careful that we only do that when one of our dogs can see us, otherwise it’s a frantic game of who can find a tug toy first!” So glad to hear that you were able to displace that biting behavior! I really appreciate the in-depth discussion on this. We have been struggling with our 13 week old Aussie Shepherd, and while we’ve made some progress we had some setbacks too. Part of the problem is not recognising when she getting too worked up, and by the time we realise it’s too late and she’s jumping up and biting my legs, arms, and hands. So I’m going to take a step back, focus on really noticing her body language, working on prevention, rather than a cure. ☺️ It shouldn’t get to the stage of her jumping up and biting. We really appreciate your videos. Thank you.

That puppy is an angel. Mine is Dracula non stop. If I pick him up, get my hand within a foot, I am under attack. Collar grabbing makes him thrash. So, today was day 5 I handfed only and was finally able to pet him while he ate each kibble. It was only for 2-3 seconds but he had not allowed that at all before. We play several times a day to drain energy. He now knows lure sit, down, touch and does come consistently. This is in one week! Just wish he'd be a little cuddly. I feel under attack. So far none of that! 😞 He's a Mini Aussie, 9 weeks old.

Thanks for the recommendations. I sort of accidently adopted a hound pup that's somewhere around 8 months. He loves everyone but gets too wound up and the next thing you know it's snap snap bite bite. I've been yelling Ow! and leaving so he understands that play stops then but I need to help him settle down. The other day I found myself just holding him at arms length dangling from the leash because he had gotten too wired and I couldn't let him get hold of me.

hi! while i'm a firm believer that it's best to train a dog when they are fully awake at have the most energy, it sounds like in your case a good round of toy play(maybe tug?) to ware him out somewhat could help. I'm sure he has a toy he likes...if not, find one and add "charge" value into it. indulge in his hound nature and maybe get him a duck toy or something and if you REALLY want to go the extra mile invest in some duck scent. he's past his puppy phase so you need to rehabilitate your dog's focus from your arm onto something a lot more engaging and rewarding.

Hi! I love your videos! This is very helpful. I have a 7 months old golden doodle. His bitting is better compared to when we first got him but sometimes when I pet him or play with him he tends to nibble on my hand (light tension but it does prevent me from continuing the play or pet him). I love the holding the collar and learn to settle technique, but we use a harness on him normally outdoor and none at home. Is there a way to practice this without a collar or should we always have a collar on him in door and then do a collar + harness combo outdoor. He was very weird about walking with a collar when he was little so we resorted to a harness and has been using it since (but really we haven't tried to train him much with collar and walking; he is pretty good with walking with harness with no pull). Thanks!

Ive noticed this too, I have two small toddlers. My 3yr likes to scream in the house and it makes my 1 1/2 yr scream back. (we're working on this). I was building value to my pups collar and it was going well. Lately she'll growl and bares her teeth when I'm holding her in my arms while on her back. She's also out of control with biting everyone everywhere. One of my husbands coworkers told me to hit her.That pissed me off. My puppy is 11 weeks now and she's a German Shepard and Red Heeler mix. She won't leave my side and if i leave her alone ANYWHERE even for a few seconds she'll loose her mind barking. My husband is threatening to sell her. Which it adding to the stress of being a mom with a brain injury. I cant handle so many things all at once like both kids screaming and a barking puppy. My brain will go into a panic mode that makes me want to shut down mentally and physically. Plus a husband that says the dogs name then yells at her. No one in this family is "helping" with the puppy. She is my next possible service dog since the one I had 3 months ago was hit and killed by a car. I understand raising a puppy isn't easy but It would be great if my husband tried to be more understanding, of my disability and the puppy. (My brain Injury happened after we were married) If anyone has advice or any pointers to share that would be great! :)

@@ashleyzuras8006 Honestly I just think patience is key. We were honestly considering giving my dog up due to the biting, especially around my 5 year old. But I thought let's give this one last good go. It was the best thing I could've done. He was learning to drop, leave and sitting in no time. The biting didn't exactly stop straight away but he was much more tender as soon as he lost his puppy teeth. Just persist with it is the best advice I can give. I don't think I'll be letting him off the lead anytime soon, he'd disappear as soon as he seen another animal lol.

Hi, I have a male golden retriever which I have him since he was 4.5 months, he is almost five months with us now. Until today, we still couldn't stop him from biting everyone in this household. My husband is a big guy and he couldn't even stopped him. He turns every single playtime to biting your hand or jumped on you. It is nice to watch your video but my dog doesn't calm down until we put a leash on him and attached to a chair. My husband is a big guy and he couldn't even tame him down. My most concerned is my 13 years old son as he is the worst victim. Everyday all the dog does - morning and after school - waiting for my son to come down for breakfast or come back from so he can jumps on him and bites him. He kind of sleeps during the day. We try to walk him before my son comes home to wear him out a bit but he will not walk as the weather is too hot (Singapore). We are about to give up on him if he doesn't improve by December. Hopefully, you can have a video on really aggressive dog to guide us. Does sterilising him helps in his behaviour?

@McCannDogs 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Stephanie! A puppy who is 8 weeks old can start to do some simple and fun training exercises as soon as they come home with you. I have a video that can show you those first few exercises: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lanZmKJnYriIq5I When your puppy is between 10-16 weeks, they can begin to learn things like being lured into a sit, or a down, you can start to teach them to respond to their name. You’ll need to teach your puppy that they aren’t allowed to bite during this period as well. Once they are 16 weeks or older, you can begin their more formal obedience exercises. Walking on a lose leash, come when called, stationary skills like “stay”. Through all of this training, even from the beginning, you want to be using good management skills to help them to be successful. Like using a house-line to have good control, and using their crate to make sure they don’t get into trouble when you aren’t able to supervise! Hope this helps, Happy Training! ~Ken

Hi there, Elliot! Using a shorter word like "Yes" is a lot more precise. Longer phrases like "good boy" are great for praise, but they are too long to mark the specific moment that your dog makes a good choice. A lot can happen in just a couple of seconds. Even if you choose another word, make sure that it is nice and short, and you can definitely follow up with "good boy" as you praise your dog for a job well done!. We've been giving her chew toys to distract her, or placing her back in her exercise pen when she's biting too much and stating "no biting" before/after we've placed her in the pen. I hope these methods work, I'm definitely trying this method as well when I get home because she's a biting ninja right now!

Hi there, C M! You don’t need to roll her on her back. This can feel like a really threatening position for your pup, and you want to be all about being clear and being fair. Follow the steps in this video and with good timing, your puppy will have it figured out in no time! Happy Training! ~Ken

I have a 12 week old Boxer/Lab pup and she gets really hyper aggressive and air jumps and bites. I have tried settle, sit and holding her collar and here is what happened; she will sit with hand and voice command but very short time period and she will get hyper and jump and snap and hard and usually it is over tug of war with her leash which I will not play with her and indulge. I want to get her to stop biting and stop air borne attacks and not sure what else to do. I am sure she is teething but this can really hurt and any advice would be welcomed.

Why reach under for the collar and not over? Just wondering what difference it makes
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Elle! Reaching under the collar will be less likely to cause the puppy to pull away from you. You’ll also have a little more head control in this case. If your puppy is being really “toothy” then your best option may be to reach over the puppy’s head to get control. If you’re able to take control of your puppy’s collar by reaching under, that’s a better choice in this instance. Thanks for watching! ~Ken

Thank you for the video! I have a 5-month german shepherd, who has been with me for about 2 months. Is it too late to start this training with her? When she bites and i grab her collar, she gets very angry, and bites more. Should I continue until she learns?
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Yes, you shouldn’t lower your expectations, you definitely want to be consistent. You can even be a little more abrupt with your “hey” or whatever verbal marker you use. You should also do some handing training with her in a less stimulating setting so she can learn that remaining calm when she’s being handled is a valuable thing. When you’re working on her biting you need to take her collar quickly, but in these handling exercises you can show her that remaining relaxed when your hands are on her will get her something great! Puppy Handling Training - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGjMhnmFeM1qobs If she continues to bite at you during this process we have another biting video that may be helpful for you. You’ll address the biting quickly and praise when she relaxes. Here is a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aV7Sq6Ovo9-Nq7c Happy Training! ~Ken

Hi! I have a 12 week old German Shepherd puppy at home that is new to our house. He have had her home for about a month and everything is going great with her. But we have a 15 year old dauchsund who at first just kind of coexisted with her. We have different areas of the house sectioned off with puppy gates so the two don’t really interact. At first they just kind of coexisted on each side of the gate with not much action. But this week it’s like something changed and every time our old dog sees the puppy she goes insane barking and it’s definitely a threatening bark not playful. My German Shepherd puppy doesn’t bark back really but looks like she wants to play. Is there any thing I could do to get them to get a long at this point? I am afraid to put them together because I don’t want either to get hurt. We didn’t really socialize our dauchshund, she has always just been our house dog.

Hi there, Hope! It's really important that you do keep them separated for the time being. It's hard to say what the cause is, but there are a couple of things you can try. If you are able to go for a short walk with both of them, both on leash, and walk with a friend or family member, so there is very little pressure for both dogs. You can even go to an open space with them on leash and just try some puppy training with your new pup, while you have a friend far enough away with your older dog that it doesn't create a distraction for your puppy. Take lots of time doing things with the dogs independently. You can even work on some of the simple skills with your older dog, just for fun! You really want to spend your time developing your relationship with your puppy before you introduce her to your older dog. I have a video link that you may find helpful that talks about introducing your puppy to your older dog: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eF65YXZ4eqyjaLs Thanks for watching! ~Ken

Nowherr in any of these training videos do these dogs nip, snap and bite like my 15wk old puppy does. It happens when he's excited and tired and yet completely out of the blue he will just walk up and bite not having been excited and not being tired. He's drawing blood daily and I'm covered in bruises, I look like a dalmatian! We've tried everything but he's a nightmare, especially when he gets in a snapping frenzy. It's like something will have a positive impact once and then he's over it and goes right back to going for you. There are no puppy classes or anything near us so we can't get him taught to play nice by other puppies either. Never had this from other puppies we've owned, either me or my husband.

I'm by no means a trainer, but I had this problem with my dog when I first got her at 9 months old (she was adopted). I had to be super dramatic to get through to her. I would yip super loud like she really really hurt me, and then I would jump up and go in another room and shut her out. I'd wait a few minutes until I could hear that she had calmed down and was lying outside the door, and then I'd come out, very calmly, and go back to what I was doing when she chomped me. It really didn't take her very long to learn that if she bit me, then she didn't get to be with me. Simultaneously, if she was calmly resting near me and being good, I would make a point to reach out to her and engage. The two things together taught her that biting was not the way to get attention. But that's just what I found worked for me and my dog.
