One of my favorite tricks when dealing with other people who are in a rush is to imagine they have to poop. That way I don't get annoyed when they cut in front of me in line or scurry around me like it's the end of the world. Nope...they just have to poop! I go from feeling unnerved to laughing.

Remaining clam is a skill, it does not come natural, and that is why for the people who know how to remain clam in stressful situations, it is a good thing to look up to them, ask them for advice, and model their behaviors. When you remain calm, you are allowing yourself to be two steps ahead of anger. When we are clam, we can live full out and achieve our best possible version of ourselves!

Just for the record; folks, do not go to people who are aggressive towards you and say "I know you are hurt". Do it subliminally. Saying something like "I know you are hurt" might be understood as "I pity you", which is not a good thing to say to people who are aggressive towards you.
@SpadesHeart

it is akin to the common and somewhat sarcastic retort to aggressive behavior, "Who hurt you?" haha
@MrJakeolin
@MrJakeolin 8 жыл бұрын
How does this gel with customer service training that tells you the best way to defuse an aggressive person is to name their emotion. its a little like using a break in hypnosis and causes internal dissonance. it gives you enough time to interject reason. However if they just continue to be aggressive it is safe to assume that they are not simple upset by something else, but really do have a problem with you personally. We cannot at all time assume ourselves to be blameless
@awsomebot1
@awsomebot1 8 жыл бұрын
MrJakeolin I think (and this is my personal opinion, I'm not qualified to make factual statements about this) naming the emotion is different that trying to name the cause of the emotion. When you say something like "Sir, you are getting angry", it's different than saying "Sir, I understand you are angry because you've had a rough time recently". On the former case, you talk about something that the other person is clearing showing you. That is his emotions. He wants you to see his/her emotions. So it's okay if you react to that and state the obvious. And sometimes stating the obvious will help. On the latter case, you are talking about something which the other person hasn't told you about, and probably would never tell you about. So in other words, you're assuming something about their personal life, which can get someone really angry.
@MrJakeolin
@MrJakeolin 8 жыл бұрын
awsomebot1 I understand what you say, and you are right that there is a difference. in saying to someone, you're getting angry rather than saying you're angry because.... that is presumptuous, and I agree that it would probably make the person angrier, it would I. However, and perhaps I am starting from an opposite entry point, the statement was about not being presumptuous in your approach, whereas my approach give an option to int eject and confront in a relatively benign manner. Lets note, that the vodeo does not suggest that every person who does these thing has been hurt, it also suggest that a person may not have slept well. unless may latter case applies, in which case you have bigger problems. :)

A friend of mine in Turkey who had been tortured as a political prisoner, one day saw the policeman who tortured him on the street . He said he followed him for a while on that very crowded place in Istanbul. At the beginning he was very close, he could even see how the man held the hand of his girlfriend, but then as they got out of his sight, he changed his mind . He didn't run after them...So I asked him what he wanted to do with the guy if he got him... He could, understandably, beat the hell out of him, or at least, shout out loud what a psychopath he was, for that girlfriend to know. But he told me: - I was only going to ask: "Why did you do it?". It broke my heart to hear this. ..But he seemed so calm, so noble. I have no idea, how a person can preserve such a virtue after all that he had gone through. May be people who suffer the unimaginable find an equanimity in themselves we cannot even imagine. They become so "human" that they can't be otherwise. I had the same feeling watching the entire documentary " The Look of Silence" by Joshua Oppenheimer. That young man who goes from one place to the other, visiting the ( unpunished) murders of his brother, asking "why" in the most gentle, noble, human way you can imagine... Of course this video is about smaller things in life that make us angry, but I wanted to give these extreme examples, just for us to remember how human beings are indeed capable of "keeping calm" even in the face of the worst atrocities and injustices...We must learn from them. I also agree with the point about our self hatred. Lacan says that the Christian injunction " love thy neighbor as thyself" must be ironic, because people hate themselves! On an interview with Paul Holdengräber, Elisabeth Gilbert said something very beautiful about this. She said that we all want to be good and kind in this world. And indeed we have a great opportunity at hand: since we have ourselves 24 hours available, the best way to really "practise" this sort of kindness is to start with ourselves! It is very true: the closer you come to yourself and the better you understand yourself, the more "connected" you feel to others and the more compassionate you become.

Lua, if I could be granted one wish it would be to be sitting with you at an outside café table in Venice, talking about this. What a great conversation we could have. I haven't experienced what your friend did, but I've had some experiences with bad people. When you suffer the violence of narcissists over your lifetime, you learn how to leave them completely alone and to treat yourself with great kindness. There is no alternative. This is because nothing is gained by retaliating against a person who is evil. Such people had survived their horrible childhoods by deciding inside of themselves when they were babies that other people are things to be controlled. They were on the dark path since infancy, which is something that no compassionate person can win against, nor should we want to. The need to 'win' against anyone is only the domain of the narcissist. Supportiveness is more in line with human nature, but narcissists are incapable of conceding wrongdoing. Whenever confronted, the narcissist will always win. Your friend knew his abuser well, and he knew that any further contact would re-open the wounds and create even more trouble for himself while his abuser will masterfully spin it in their favor and win. Your friend also knew not to horrify you with what he learned, because you will most likely never need to deal with what he did, and he doesn't want to frighten you. Two movies you might want to see are "The Marathon Man" and Polanski's "Death and the maiden." They address this sort of thing. It's a big human problem, which unfortunately this KZbin video does not address appropriately.

Hello there Bikewithlove! Thanks a lot fro reading my comment and for such a friendly message. If I was in Venice I would definitely have a coffee with you:-) You are right. People's cruelty have its roots mainly in their childhood. So unless they are willing to confess and improve there is no way you can deal with them. Thanks a lot for reminding me of those two great movies. I have seen them, but they are worth watching again too. I remembered a speech by Desmon Tutu, where he gave " Death and the Maiden" as an example. He reminded us that the woman in the movie let the torturer go, only after he confessed what he did. It is so important. Personally, it would not be possible for me to forgive someone who doesn't ask for forgiveness. You may have a "need" to understand how they ended up the way they are, but you don't have to force yourself to love or forgive these people. Not looking for revenge should be enough. Once again thanks a lot for your message. Best wishes!

no its not. They cant help that they are born this way. Usually people like that are very unhappy, lonely and insecure. They may have twisted minds but thats not their fault. (how they choose to deal with it is) They wont be able to experience so many things because of their psychological issues. The life of a psychopath is usually very sad and depressing. A good trick that i learned when i get to know people is just to accept thats who they are. I learn peoples patterns and their motives, because thats more dependable than anything anyone can say, if you look at people like that,their behaviour will become very logical and dependable. The downside is also that people will become boring and predictable very quickly, but oh well everything has its downsides i guess

Most of life is in our minds, and our thoughts are not necessarily true. For example, if you think you're unattractive, you will always find "evidence" that it's true. I'm loving the message in this video. Lately I've been adopting a philosophy of meeting people where they are at. I abide by my personal set of morals and boundaries, but I go about setting them differently with each person I encounter. Depending on the person I may change my tone, body language, and the amount of detail I use to communicate my point. No two people are the same, therefore treating them as if they were only makes life harder on you.

You really can't practice this to much without expending a lot of energy to do so. After years and years of trying to be understanding of other peoples problems to avoid harming and stay calm it begins to become a process of putting others over yourself. You can only justify the actions of others for so long before you realize many wont give you the same benefit of the doubt.

Yes, I consider it emotional labor and to delve it out to people who require it continually without reciprocation or consciousness is self-abuse. I don't pity anyone nor do I desire anyone's pity. I like to be accountable and consider it a mark of respect to have the expectation of that flow both ways. If the relationship doesn't reflect that for whatever reason, well, that's what boundaries are for. Over time, setting those boundaries while remaining calm has become easier. Pity, to me, denotes a sense of superiority and a denial of that person's ability to overcome their challenges. Compassion is a better term, I think, because it acknowledges the difficulty in resolving our issues while still honoring that person's inherent capacity for growth (whether or not they ever achieve it).

I agree. In my experience, I have learned that being in Los Angeles, a larger percent of people will not give you the benefit of the doubt, or courteousness/politeness/manners so after time and time again of giving this to others, you wear out your will, in my opinion. If you have no-one giving you that same politeness, then I have to be selfish. I started judging, automatic stereotypes build. I believe this is natural response to splintering/social atomization of people in a large city. In a situation that I gauge as 'charged', I choose to avoid it. This is not a popular opinion and may be seen as (insert **IST or **ISM) but I do not apologize for this.

Isn't that a good thing? I think it is. People who lose their temper easily usually find themselves in a deeper ditch than before. Even if it blows off steam in the moment (and yeah it does feel good to do that-but it's temporary), it's rare for any improvements in the situation to come out of it. Being calm is a way better solution in the long run even if it means having to tolerate people's crap. Although I think being assertive and setting strong boundaries is the best solution for people who give too much crap.

But why they're assholes is the questions the video ask people to ask in order to not lose calm. Sure, you don't have to be kind to them, but to remain calm, you just have to remind yourself he has an issue and you shouldn't take it as if he necessarily has something against you: he's jsut an asshole to everybody for some reason, and that day he crossed roads with you.

People are rarely assholes for the sake of it. Everyone has some sort of rationale or masked motivation for the way they act, and everyone has precursors which make up their impulses. To be honest, I think simply saying "people are just assholes" is actually somewhat lazy, because it's easier for us to say that our enemies are merely inferior and to continue hating them, than it is for us to try to use reason and understand them.
@MyplayLists4Y2Y

YOU SAID: "But why they're assholes is the questions the video ask people to ask..." REPLY: The video is assumptive and reductive because it doesn't ask that question, the video states what it says the answer is: self hatred. Are there reasons motivating mean, etc. behaviors? Sure, but self hatred is only one reason of many reasons (i.e. greed, lust, jealousy, power, control, etc.)
@fou-luthedragonemperor8648
@fou-luthedragonemperor8648 8 жыл бұрын
***** First: Self-hatred in the video is used as a reason why one would believe another person has an agenda against oneself, the reason why one would believe one is the "target of mockery and harm", when it's not necessarily true. This has psychological sustain, so it isn't an assumption, but an aseveration made under reasonable arguments. You've misinterpreted it's usage too, believing they used it on another part of their argument. Second: The video used the "pin" philosophy to exemplify it's point: find the reason that makes the other act irritantly. Those reasons include those that you stated (greed, lust, self hatred, etc), so your point was already in the video, therefore is already not reductive, as it implies those elements you claim have been taken out due to reduction. Third: Even if the video only defines one of the reasons of why people can act irritably , that doesn't invalidate it point: it only means the video gave one example out of many. So yeah, you misinterpreted the use of the term Self-Hatred in the video. Wanna try to debunk more of my arguments, or you just wanted to sharpshoot that part of it?

+1 for your country. In the US public school system that I attended not only did we not learn any of this, but we were also subject to many teachers that flat out didn't like us, some of them literally screaming at us. Kids elevated themselves by pushing others down. Teachers observed kids getting bullied and pretended they didn't see it. I'm sure that not all schools here are so bad, but politics and the NEA refuse the fundamental and immediate change that is so needed. And I suppose that most parents think their children should be educated the way they were educated.

Very very good. The "pin" that is behind when people do difficult things to us. We are all trying to escape our suffering and often we only make matters worse. The self-hatred that leads us to think that others will target us. Always on our guard. Brilliant. However, at the end you say "move from anger to pity." I am not sure what you mean by pity but I would prefer moving from anger to compassion or empathy or love or kindness. To me, pity implies a superior attitude towards others and this will block empathy and closeness. Pity reinforces our fixed self-view as being a superior sort of person. Compassion sees that the other person is also in a lot of hidden or not so hidden pain and we know how that feels because we are often hurting and scared too. The other person has probably got a lot of self-hatred too. Love KJ

I make a conscious effort to try and understand other people and their (oftentimes understandable) motives before being angry at them. Some good points, but it's not always malevolent intent that angers or frustrates me. If a waiter spills a glass of wine on me because he was busy chatting with his coworker instead of paying attention to his surroundings, I realize he didn't mean to spill that glass on me but he was being careless, which would make me angry. If a woman is blocking the entrance to a store because she is stopped in place and texting on her phone, I realize she isn't intentionally blocking the entrance, but she is being self absorbed, which would make me angry. If there are 3 slices of pizza left at the buffet and the guy in front of me takes all 3, I know he didn't do that to spite me, but he is being selfish, which would make me angry. In any of those cases, upon realizing what they have done, those people may apologize and insure me it was not on purpose. I would realize that it was and feel that the socially appropriate thing to do would be to say "it's alright", but inside I would still be upset.
@sirenachantal471

It may help if you remember the times when you made a mistake, were distracted, or were desperately hungry. You could think in a different and proactive way - tap the waiter's shoulder - yell "Sorry! In all aspects life of responsible citizen? A different way I like to look at it: If tomorrow, magically, every single person in the world had changed inside exactly the way I wanted them, would I even see the difference? One part of me keeps having all these hard feelings and agitations and angers, but then I remember about the above question, and other part of me says, "well, the difference would be way smaller than you think". Not that it prevents me from getting angered/agitated/... (and thus failing to handle those situations) again and again, but at least it keeps some faith in humanity in me.

I like it. The fact is that there is a lot we can learn to just ignore. Somebody's wife just died, he's acting out...ignore it. But there are plenty of sociopaths in the world who are just looking to poke people with feelings. I elbowed one the other day. Saw her coming a mile away. She and her husband were dressed alike, but just a little differently to complement each other. When the train came, she tried to cut in front of me in line. I just knew it, because I'm often the target. So I elbowed her out of the way, but she still cut in front of all the people behind me. Nonetheless, I understand the message that annoyance is only hurting ourselves. Like a sour stomach causes ulcers. Still funny comment about Thor's hammer though. ;)

You're often the target? The video addressed that mentality, that it stems from self-hatred. People are careless/jerks to everyone and anyone, not just you, not mostly you. Do not take it personally. The fancy matching couple had no problems cutting in line right behind you, screwing everyone behind you over. They hand out the screwings to any and all.

Hm! I'm just seeing Squidgy's comment for the first time now, and responding to HipUsername next para. You're right about the damage getting riled up causes--then again, I wrote that comment before the US pres was elected--just sayin' ;) Hipster, I've really been giving some thought to the self-hatred thing lately. I never thought I endured that, but I realize I do. As for being a target, there were some reasons they picked me. I was the only foreigner there. I have a slight build. If they hadn't gotten behind me instead, they would have had to wait for everyone--go to the end of the line. They took advantage of the culture. It's a trigger for me because it reminds me of my biomom--greedy sociopath. We take it from the bullies, and laud them. I think that's how T became pres. Still, you're right. Nevertheless, I think I love myself more than I love those people and I'm clean out of patience for being pushed around. (I stopped subscribing to this channel when they made a video about how soothing it can be to take dick pics, but I got your comment anyway. Thanks.)

Sure there's pity, but there's also justice. Surely the advice is not to just put up with bad people because they have issues of their own. I have issues too and i'm not bad to them. If someone treats you unfairly, anger is not always a bad impulse. It can be a 'righteous' anger that achieves justice, or at the very least clarification. The real sign of self-hatred would be to ignore your own rights and assume that the other person had good reasons to do you harm. Obviously I wouldnt advocate any form of violent response, but I think Christ was instructive here when he advised to 'turn the other cheek'. That is, if you're slapped by someone, instead of fleeing or fighting back, compose yourself and find the courage to get up and defiantly offer them another swing. Break the cycle of violence by mirroring their violence back to them. Channel your anger into a brave and assertive non-violence. Again, this might be more easily said, but I think the power of it comes from a clear understanding that it is the soul, not the body, that is the most important thing. Your own spiritual purity etc is more important than your physical well-being.

You're right, this video is oversimplified, and in my opinion, wrong. Staying calm in adversity is something a person has to be trained how to do in order to channel their anger into techniques that will benefit them while giving little or no opportunity for the abuser to gain satisfaction from their victim. It takes training to become invulnerable to abusers while preserving one's identity. I used to evaluate myself in terms of marriage, job, home, kids, etc. until I learned that I'd much rather have the ability to detect a narcissist in less than 30 seconds than have anything else, because you can have all those things but if you're vulnerable to abusive people you'll lose all of it.

Bikewithlove I hear you. It's a really important life skill which isnt well taught (certainly not by this video). Increasing social isolation must play a role in this - not being exposed to the rough and tumble of a variety of characters, but insulated in a very small world of 'safe' people. But that whole world is threatened when a monster person crashes through, say at work. Ive seen people reduced to rubble over harsh/personal/emotionally violent words suddenly and sharply inflicted by a sociopath. It's laughably inadequate to advise such victims to somehow find 'pity' for their attackers. Rather, the skills of giving as good as you get, of knowing your own worth and being confident in defending it, of not politely giving ground to narcissists who start slowly testing your defences and pushing you further - these are things i'd be interested in. Because my opinion is that most people's problem isnt in keeping calm when under perceived threat - it's actually in getting angry in the first place and being roused into defending themselves. The subject of good anger deserves exploration.

+Alexander Millar - A person who acts out harshly and violently, yelling at people to make them feel small, like the kind of person you experienced in the workplace, is more likely a narcissistic bully - not a sociopath - who is projecting onto others their own unbearably bad self-opinion. A sociopath usually stays very cool while systematically undermining others because other peoples's suffering makes them feel the same warm-fuzzy that we feel when we've helped others. Sociopaths are complicated people with a lot of reversed wires in their brain who's modus operandi is based in betrayal. In the movie "Adaptation," there's a brief moment where a dinner guest makes a keen observation that the orchid thief's missing front teeth seems sociopathic, because it comes off more like a provocation than an oversight. With this distinction, it then becomes clear that Hillary Clinton is more on the sociopathic side of the spectrum, while Donald Trump leans more toward being a narcissistic bully.

It relieves stress to "pick on" someone, at least according to a video from Robert Sapolsky I watched. It might help keep your sanity to imagine people who hurt you as being in pain themselves....but it's probably not factually true. Levels of cortisol and other stress hormones have been shown to decrease after apes bully or somehow insult another. It's not that self-hate causes us to interpret things as being against us, but that self-hate makes us good, soft targets for those who need a walking punching bag to let off a little steam. Sure, try to understand someone's intentions, but if you get a whiff of intentional malice, hit back hard (metaphorically, mostly).

it certainly doesn't help one's ability to remain calm and in control if they feel like no one is truly there for them. even the people i do have in my life, which is very, very few, don't always see my side of things, and that makes it hard. we all need people we can fully trust in life

I've always imagined the pin since I was kid. At first we would do it because it seemed the right and mature thing to do. After awhile, it might become second nature to turn the other cheek; however, after awhile we would expect in return the same behavior for which we ourselves exfoliate in such situations, but the inevitable outcome from others will almost always be that of disappointment. Our expectations don't align with reality and therefore, in the end, we only become more bitter. Top comment from awesomebot1 says not to be forward in saying such things like, "I know you are hurting," but unless one's expectations are nothing from someone else in such situations, the appropriate thing to do is to call someone out on their bullshit in private, preferably.
