They key to progressing is to keep practising each stage of how to skip, from two feet together to one leg off the ground, then the other, and ending by running on the spot as you skip before morphing into the way boxers do it. Good luck.

@patrickfarrell4751 If he can do it at 78, we have no excuses, buddy. I started very light training one month ago, and it's becoming a routine now. My problem in the past has been that once I stop, it takes me ages to get back into it. Let me know how you're getting on in a couple of weeks. Good luck

Love your videos Frank - hope to be still going strong at 68, never mind 78! Respect! Skipping is a great exercise, dynamic too - 3 minute rounds skipping - speed up and slow down to match the pace of a fight. Add in double unders etc.. and finish with a 30 second sprint. Great stuff!

In my time I had a couple of students who struggled with this. Now, Frank does a great job of explaining this. It makes this seem easy to do, but still some will still have trouble with this. Now I am open to correction/adjustments by others, but I will mention some things to try to help. First, this is meant to be easy, so if you are stressed please dont be. Second, please notice that he rotates the rope from the wrists. People who have trouble try to move their arms much like done when children play a game of jump rope (one on each end, and a person jumping in the middle), no just spin from the wrists like Frank is doing. Next, the correct length. The length of the rope is hands at hip level with a bit of slack, Notice that Frank has taken in some of the length. Just do that by trying until you get something comfortable for you. Last, when to jump, With feet together, like Frank, jump when you hear the rope hit the floor/ground. Just a little hop, not knees high or moving legs. As you get better, which will not take long, the more advanced stuff comes easily along. Beginners I would suggest going in one minute segments to start. Trust me, for beginners, are those just starting an aerobic regime, a minute on rope will be enough. Do a series. Yes, as Frank mentioned if you get up to 10 minutes you are doing a very good workout. The goal, if possible, for you, is more intensity over a shorted period of time.

I’ve been disillusioned with the state of boxing. The sport has become diluted, especially when it comes to coaching. These days, anyone can complete a short course and call themselves a boxing coach, which is a far cry from the days of the ABA, when coaches brought genuine experience and passion to the ring. Watching your videos takes me back to a time when boxing truly meant something. Thank you for keeping that spirit alive.

I try my best to explain to people who are overweight. You don’t have to run a marathon, you don’t have to become a body builder. Just MOVE your body around, and one of the best ways is jump roping. 15 minutes a DAY. On and off, take breaks, go at your own pace. Jump roping is under rated. No fancy gyms, 30 minutes of circuits with a jump rope at your own pace and you’ll feel great!

This task looks so deceivingly easy… until you want to master it. The anerobic factor alone is beneficial once you get into your groove. In my 20’s I skipped 2-3 times per week/30 mins per session and loved it. I’m in my 50’s now. My cardio is still very good but I can only swim/row/weights as I always get calf muscle injuries when I run, and especially when I even try skipping? Would love to get back to doing it as I had fairly good form and speed. Just suddenly got plagued with calf pulls?

@Scott1w1 I'm not big on drills, Scott. I like teaching technique. But if you watch me shadow boxing you'll get the footwork message. Keep your feet the same distance apart no matter which direction you're travelling and be on the balls of your foot. In my view, fancy drills are more for fitness/ Hope that helps.

A nice alternative is what the Russians do instead of jump rope. They grab a 45lbs barbell with both hands. When they jump, they push the barbell out & bring it back in as they touch ground again. MMA goat Fedor Emelianenko trained this way. You can find videos if you want to see.
