Great video, Ben! I run a staffing company specializing in government contracting; about 180 contractor employees. We are going after our first commercial contracting opportunity and I did find your video informative. The only thing I could add to the "downside" comments is dealing with employee attendance. We are responsible for ensuring our employees show up for work on time, every day, at every site. Tracking down, disciplining, and documenting attendance issues probably takes up about 30% of my daily routine. 10% of the day dealing with performance problems. The remaining half of each day is spent on actually running the show! Staffing is not for the faint of heart!

Totally agree, employee attendance becomes an issue real real quick.

Hi Beeeeen! Super great video, I used to work for an agency doing temps/contracting and I think people maybe also would underestimate the fact you also have to reply to a lot of questions all day long (about sick leaves, salaries etc. etc.). In the Netherlands you can also work together with a payroll company that will be the formal employer for ´your´ workers. So in that case you are actually only an intermediary. That´s what I´m looking into right now (of course you earn less with that model but I´m interested in providing temps opportunities as well without being the employer).

Don’t forget to have legal review your business structure and work up your client contracts to help relieve you of any medical/work-Comp liability that occurs on the client’s job-site. It’s 1099, not W-2 (which does provide a safety net, WHEN DONE RIGHT). 😉 It’ll save you a fortune and help safeguard your Corp.

I was a Temp worker a few times, (moved out-of-state) and it seemed like a quick fix to the "finding a job, fast" problem (it was not) and your generalizations of temps is not totally wrong ...but a big short-sighted, i can tell you have not been on the other end of this..... i was hired to do one job, ended up doing a different one, i was also told i would be making a certain amount, and yet my first check was only the legal minimum wage (hourly) to the cent....also i was not paid for "orientation" from the temp company, and "orientation" for the contact company....it was a lot of paperwork, and listening to people contradict the last person i spoke to....it was the worse of both worlds, working for a big company with none of the benefits.. overall not worth my time.

@BenNader3 жыл бұрын
Your goal should TOTALLY be to master direct placement and then bring yourself into the staffing space so that when clients that need contract, temp, temp to perm, etc, come knocking, YOU'RE READY! + Having a nice mix of both types of contracts in your portfolio just makes you that much more of a cashflow machine as an agency.
@i_accept_all_cookies4 жыл бұрын
For harder to find contractors, do you think clients would be willing to pay an upfront retainer (that could be applied to the candidate's first month payment)? That would alleviate the cash flow problem.

@@BenNader Sure, I have a list of assumptions and questions (and my context is IT). Assumptions (please challenge any of these) when working with offshore staff: no need for workers comp, I9/W4, FICA, or payroll taxes; still need general liability (because you just never know); paying offshore incurs ongoing wire transfer fees; (for me) English would be a required language, otherwise I can't vet candidates. Questions: Any special paperwork or taxes for offshore resources? Do back offices for offshore contractors exist? Is it easier to work with an offshore consultancy/agency (lose margin) or source candidates yourself (protect your margin)?
@BenNader4 жыл бұрын
So literally EVERYTHING you describe above is going to be governed by the laws in the country within these workers are conducting the work. YOU do not need to have the typical forms you'd need for temps working on American soil. Yes offshore cosultant back office companies DO exist for this type of thing but due to the nature of the work load they'll probably eat into your margin higher than 5% although I can't say for sure because it's never something I've fully engaged in. I just know that the governing elements of all of the above have to do with the country they reside in. When YOU make income however, that income is taxed under the American tax code given that you reside within the United States. I hope that helps.

Staffing is lucrative, direct placement is lucrative, look at it this way, they're both going to have their pro's / cons man, you're going to have to get funding, insurance, payroll, workers comp for staffing, - for Direct you're going to need to do intensive searches for the right candidates, it's a toss up, but eventually I tell everyone to go from direct placement and move into staffing after about 6 months or so.
