I've been involved in dog training for years, and I have always been frustrated by how many trainers over complicate this process. You presented this information in a clear and concise manner that even an absolute beginner could grasp, and you did it in under 7.5 minutes. Well done! You are a credit to the profession!

This video has helped me considerably on heel training.

I had that issue where my GSD was trying to anticipate what position she was going to end up in so since she was preparing for it steps before actually needing to stop or sit I was unable to ask for other commands while in motion. She put the recall and front, center, and sit all together in anticipation so now I keep having to first go back to my original command and do it from 360 degrees. I want to be able to control my dog 360 degrees and I had to switch up what position we ended in. I was even giving slight cues I didn't notice myself. The one inch my hand raised was enough to put my dog from a full run into a dead sit digging her bum into the ground. I had to mark and reward because she did what I had inadvertently asked. I knew it was me bc I was thinking about it and my hand just barely moved and she noticed. I mean she notices the slightest things. Best thing I ever did was get ME training to be a proper handler.

Keep working on it until the dog's fluidly able to move his rear end and then start only rewarding for a really tight position. Keep in mind where your lure is and keep it in a very consistent and steady position.

Hello sir, when do you introduce the command?
@truffulatreebee14476 жыл бұрын
Wondering this also
@logandyck69525 жыл бұрын
You tie in the marker / command, only after the dog has a very clear understanding of what your doing. So, to recap. 1) Using a food bucket / bowl, reward for the dog simply putting a paw or paws on the bucket. 2) Then after a few reps, start walking in circles with their feet on it, rewarding as soon as thier rear end moves at all. 3) Next use a barrier to heel around, car, pole, fence etc. 4) Next heeling without barrier. Lure dog behind you, but you start walking forwards the dog comes into the behind position, this teaches the dog to spin around fast to follow the heeling lure hand. Its also important to go back to heeling against walls often, as it promotes nice straight heeling free of crabbing or forging. 5) **not in video** Start fading the lure hand. This is done stationary at first. Bring the dog into heel position, start moving your reward hand (left hand if heel is on left) to the opposite side of the dogs head and hold it there. Reward when the dog looks away from your hand and at you. This teaches the dog, don't focus on the lure, focus on me. Once the dog is killing it at this, you can start changing where the lure hand comes from (behind your back, or far left of dog) Never reward with the opposite hand you heel with (right hand if dog heels left side) as this teaches the dog to look over to your other side, which will cause FORGING, which is a pain to fix without a long line and helper. Remember, don't train problems into your dog, if it's predictable, its preventable. So Once they focus on you solely, not your lure hand regardless of position from a stationary heel, then you add movement. It's at this point, that I personally start tying in the verbal command "HEEL". I say "HEEL" luring the dog into heel position, then star walking against a wall / fence - Start by only walking a few steps, reward dog for getting a few steps. Then reward for 5-6 steps, then 10 steps etc. Eventually you will start rewarding infrequently, so the rewards are variable and not expected every single time. Michael Ellis has great videos on Focused or Contact Heeling, but Larry sums it up really nicely here in this video! I'm sure he could better explain how to fade the lure hand and troubleshoot crabbing / forging.

What verbal command do you use for this? We hike a lot in the mountains and I’m not sure how to implement this since sometimes I need to call him close to me when mountain bikers are coming. He’s always off lease and no more than 20 feet in front of us but when I tell him to sit henusually comes to me and then sits versus just in his spot. So that’s why I think heel may be nice?

How much time should you spend on each step? Should they master one step before moving on to the next step?
@JohnHenkamGangte5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it applies to anything you're teaching the dog. Always make sure the dog reliably knows the step you're teaching then only then move on to the next one. You can also try doing the step you're at in different places first if you want a reliable move. I had to learn all this myself, I'm currently in the process of teaching my puppy too.

Any tips for a dog that wants to run off at times? Mine got out of our backyard twice in 2 days. Had him for 4 weeks. He's very good with everything in training, behavior, etc. This seems to be his one issue. Had him out front today and had my back to him for a bit and he started to wander off and I felt like he wanted to make a run for it. As soon as I saw this I called him and he came. His recall is very good and he's already able to walk with me off leash. Is this something just built into him, or maybe because I've only had him a short time? He's a husky/lab mix, 1 year old, neutered.... Our relationship seems very good as well.
