Thanks for clarifying whether you have or don't have any kind of relationship with a company I like your break down. I actually did spend $18/day for living and food expenses while I was in Spain. There are ways to save in areas that are known to be expensive. I like volunteering which saves me a bunch. :)

A tip I heard with websites like skyscanner: use private browsing/incognito. There are websites that put cookies on your search history to learn about you. Some places offer you less inexpensive deals if you continually browse normally.
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Yes! This is a great tip. I don't always do it (I usually book flights pretty quick) but when I'm pricing out a specific flight I know I need for a wedding or something with a specific date and location, I always browse in Incognito.

Hi Lindsay - if given a choice and just have enough airline miles, would you use your mileage to get a free rt ticket or pay the economy price and use the mileage points to upgrade to business/1st class seats?
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Ohhhh good question. I personally use them for flights but that's because I usually get upgraded to Economy Comfort anyway with my status on Delta and I honestly don't feel the need to fly First Class or Business. Don't get me wrong, it's lovely but I'm tiny (5'3") so the leg room doesn't matter to me and I don't like to eat airplane food or drink booze on flights so the perks of First aren't really that worth it to me. If you're super tall though or just want the experience of flying First or Business then I would say go for it but because my ideal "experience" on a plane is popping some sleeping pills and sleeping through the entire flight, economy works great and I can save my miles to use on flights. Hope this helps and happy travels!

I'd like to add: Couchsurfing. Seriously one if not the best tool when travelling (solo). Accomodation is after transportation (incl. flights) the most expensive thing. I honestly spent barely more overall in Australia & NZ than in SEA, thanks to CS. Roughly 600€ per month, and I did a whole lot of things. Life can be pretty cheap if you never go anywhere and never do anything. Travelling or not travelling. It's finding the perfect balance for you, what is important for you, to spend money on, what kind of adventures and experiences, regardless of your life sitiúation and location :)

great tips lindsay! so do you ever make a budget for yourself before you go on a trip? if so how do you budget for accommodations, food, fun, etc for a place you've never been to before? or do you just have a set an arbitrary budget for yourself before you leave and just wing it on most of the expenses while travelling?
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Hm... good question. I know how much I can spend max on a trip (let's say $3K for 2 months in Central America) and then just force myself to make it work. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's hard but it always has worked out.

I'm taking a leave of absence for 3 months starting this Sept! I'm going through Europe. Obviously not the cheapest destination but I know a few people over there which should help with accommodations for a least some of my trip. How much do you think backpacking for 3 months would cost in Europe. PS Love your channel, definitely encouraged me to take this trip! so thank you!
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Rick, super stoked for you. Hm... 3 months in Europe... what countries are you thinking? There is a big difference between say, wanting to spend time in Paris vs Budapest when it comes to budgeting. Also, staying with friends is a great way to do it!
@rickguerrero837 жыл бұрын
Luckily Paris and Amsterdam, Berlin and south of France are places where I actually know people. Aside from those places I'd like to visit Portugal, south of Spain, Italy, maybe Greece, the rest is up in the air. I normally like to plan a bit before I go anywhere but I think I'm going to wing it this time around...kind of stressing me out, but I think it will be good for me haha. Budapest was on my list too and I hear Eastern Europe is supposed to be cheaper. Perhaps spending more time in the east is wise, and hostels all the way of course. Are you doing any long haul trips in the future? I enjoyed your vids from one place to the next.

Hello, im going on a RTW trip working online at the same time. Do you have any info on whether it is possible to obtain ''difficult'' visas when in foreign countries as a tourist? I'll need to obtain my Russian visa from China. Ive asked around embassies and no info on Russia yet. Also, what camera and backpack (preferably with wheels) would you recommend? Thanks so much for your answer.
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Hi Kate, oh man. I suck at visas - I couldn't get into India the first time I tried because of my (lack of) visa and I overstayed my visa in Thailand and then by accident in Vietnam. I do know China and Russia have intensive visa processes for Americans. I had my China visa handled by a private company but it was expensive. I would call a private company and ask them their thoughts - they might try to sell you on something but at least could give you some direction. If you're going for super minimal, a GoPro and GoPole with extra batteries and memory cards is enough. I now use a Sony A7S but it definitely adds more to my travel package. Here is a video on packing where I touch on backpacks but I would recommend any suitcase that is the correct size and has 4 wheels, if you could though - I would recommend just a regular backpack. Wheels are going to be a pain in the ass as lots of countries don't have designated sidewalks. Happy travels! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHvEmJiGfr2DeKM

Hi there, thanks for this. Yes, you can tell them to contact me if you see my e-mail somewhere? I'm Greek, though. I dunno if they work with other countries :) Better to consult a travel agency here I guess. I was about to start South for the winter but plans changed and Ill start North later so I can get my visas for difficult countries from Greece and be on the safe side. :) Besides using a Gopro in your first adventure, did you use another camera? I understand you have recently bought the mirrorless one. PS: I'm going to do 18 countries or so too, including places like North Korea , Alaska and Patagonia. I was just checking your Alaska adventure. Maybe I can have some fresh job opportunities later? Problem is, I don't like vlogging and stuff (I mean me talking , showing and explaining), but I can still show them my work (videos and stuff) I guess :D

Hey Lindsey. What are your thoughts on Americans traveling to Istanbul this year? Good or bad idea? I was planning a trip there but now there are travel warnings.
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Personally, I think it is fine but I'm not too fussed about gov't warnings honestly. I was there during the height of the Taksim Square protests a few years ago and felt totally safe (I did go to the protest though and ended up getting pepper sprayed but I never felt that my actual safety was in danger.) If you're going to be worried the whole time about the government warnings, that could ruin your trip (you'll be too scared to enjoy) but if you can look past it and still feel comfortable while you travel, I would recommend still going
@technojunkie1237 жыл бұрын
Lindsay Mc you got pepper sprayed!? Dang! i'm really surprised you didn't feel unsafe in Istanbul if you got pepper sprayed in the face
@GlobalAdventurer7 жыл бұрын
Maybe Kali I'm a female and travel solo. I'm going to Turkey (various cities there) in September for a 2 month stay. I'm sure it's safer there than in most places in the USA. I'm serious when I say that. Most people think wherever they live is better or safer than somewhere else. There's travel warnings in the USA too. Look on trip advisor istanbul forum for the last travel news from regular travelers just like you. Good luck.
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Yes! Global Adventurer has a super good point. And yeah, I mean - it was my fault really. I went to the actual protest where the cops and protesters were because I wanted to meet the people who were protesting. It was super hectic but I could have easily avoided it by just not going to that specific place in the city which is why I didn't feel unsafe at all. Istanbul is lovely and the people are amazing.

@beautiful95127 жыл бұрын
I also live in Europe and yes, we are lucky. But keep in mind that in Europe, you can see so many countries that are less than 1500km away, while Los Angeles is already 2000km away from Vancouver, which is probably the nearest big city… so yeah, we're lucky
@eleanorblack1597 жыл бұрын
although it is ironic because yes europe is way more accessible for me, but I would rather be in Lindsay's position, I'd much rather travel the US than Europe (but the grass is always greener I suppose) that being said, if Lindsay is reading this I'd want her to know she inspired me to book my first ever solo trip (baby steps!) Lindsay Mc can I try to travel through Thailand including the full moon party on around 600$?
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
So when I flew from Bangkok to Calcutta my flight was $60 one way and if you're only going to be in Thailand for a short time $600 is more than enough. The Full Moon Party is very touristy so prices are high but if you limit your time in the islands and spend time in less expensive places like Chiang Mai, you'll be better off sticking to that budget. Hope this helps!
