When you buy a return label on ebay, you are buying a USPS label and you are not given the choice of carrier to use. If the item being returned is larger than 3 pounds, chances are you are paying too much for that return label. In this video I show you (the best way I can) how I spend an extra 5 minutes to purchase and upload a cheaper return label than what ebay is offering. Check out the video and comment down below…

I love that you mark your items. I do as well. I sell small appliance parts which are tested including switches, motors and circuit boards. About 1in 10 buyers try to switch out parts. Ebay typically sides with me regarding the return if I show the serial # when available and my chicken scratch. Ebay typically denies my challenge to buyers return payment but I file for seller protection and win the cases...eventually. I need to check what I am paying for return labels after watching this video.

Very easy tutorial, I was familiar with Pirate Ship already because I use it to send things to my family and friends (it's so much cheaper!) I like the back up of messaging the Buyer with attaching the label as well.

Another excellent lesson, Jon. Thanks. Do you recall when years ago they first started this seller pays returns stuff, we were promised in an announcement that a return would be done the same way it was shipped (if we mailed it out via Media for example, it would be returned Media) and would not cost anymore than it did to originally ship to the buyer? I can't find that notice, too many years have passed I guess. I saved it then using a computer that long ago blue-screened on me. I even tried to find the discussion in the archives of the Community after I saw this the first time today... but they have changed formats many times since then, so it is simply gone as far as I can tell. It was when Jeff was in charge of the Community - and Griff had a radio show. (I miss that show.) Anyway, the effort you put into this is priceless. And I for one appreciate it.

My snipping tool defaulted to .jpg. I uploaded that to ebay and the label image was in the little box. Tried it also with .gif and there was no image in the little box on ebay. I think this may be the solution to the buyer not being able to see the label. Thanks for the info, it really helped me out.

Hi Jon, awesome video. Say for example, the customer wants to return a pair of jeans that need to be shipped Priority. I ship my Priority Mail clothing items in a Padded Flat Rate. If I need to upload a label for a customer, do I get to choose how I want the buyer to ship it back if I'm purchasing the label myself? Meaning, can I select USPS Priority Padded Flat Rate? Chances are the customer doesn't have one and will have to get one from the post office. My ultimate concern is if I select one option, and the customer just decides to put it in a poly-mailer they've saved, what happens then? Sorry if this question is all over the place. hi ihave a question iam very new to this topic of return labels. so i am trying to return a damage item for a refund on ebay, ebay recently told me that i need it to ask for a return shipping label, that had to be bought by the seller cause thats he's responsability, now how exactly is it sent physically to my adreess or by email and if its via email do i have to store it in a flash drive or something in that fashion and give it to the usps guys in order to resend free of charge? excuse my ignorance i really have little knowledge of how it works. just want to make sure on the mechanism.

On Pirate Ship there is an import from Ebay option, makes it really fast. You have to link Ebay with Pirate Ship.

You are correct. I use that feature every day. Problem is you can’t use that feature when creating a return label as it only pulls over info for unshipped items.

Do I have to have "automatically approved a return" turned OFF before I can start uploading my own labels? I currently offer free returns on eBay, and eBay sends a label when a return is approved automatically.

Yes, switch that off so you can control which ones you want to upload labels for.

Edit, nvm refreshed I was able to send them a message. It has no option to create a return label so I told them if they have the option to request one. I didn't want to send one incase one has already been created using the 30 day free system. Not familiar with top rated plus but there is literally like no options except refund at the moment maybe the UI has changed since this video, don't know.

So i happened to find your video as I had an eBay return item, so I learned something however, I called 2 eBay representitives to ask about this and couldn't get a good answer, I figure it out, that by clicking on eBay you need to set your return preferences? So you can get the opportunity to create your own label?

You should have a set return policy in place which can be set up in your business policies. When you receive a return request where you are paying for the label, you can go through ebay or you can go to a 3rd party site to generate the label then upload it to ebay. Although I find when you do this sometimes the buyer isn’t able to see your label.

@@FlippinAintEasy so on 'Return preferences' I have it set to automatically approve a return from a buyer if: The total refund is :$15.00 or less. So anything more than that I can create my own label if I choose to do so because it won't be automatically approved?

I have a question. When a buyer accuses you in giving a wrong description when it's not true, and then decides to ship the item back, can you make that buyer pay for return shipping? I was trying to get hold of Ebay about this issue, but their automatic system was not helpful. They used to have customer support over the phone. Now since pandemic, they stopped doing that. Have you ever had an issue like mine before?

Happens more often than you would think. Technically you have to provide them a return shipping label and can only adjust the refund amount if there is a problem with the return. Different than the one you sent, missing accessories of different condition. If these apply you are allowed to deduct up to 50% of the items price. In most cases if you charged separate shipping you do have the option to keep that in most cases however. The return label I’m afraid you’re stuck with.

@@FlippinAintEasy Ebay got worse over the years especially for sellers. Their customer service if u want to solve an issue with a buyer practically doesn't exist. They made me not like them anymore.

Hi there, they do have customer support over the phone, you just have to know how to get to it.... Go to Help & Contact tab all the way at the bottom, than scroll down again and click on "contact us" than choose Fees and Billing/ Selling Fees/ and than click on "have us call you".... they will call you within less than a minute, assist you or transfer you to the correct department.... Hope that helps

Ppl just select not as described knowing it puts the seller in a lose lose and forces them to have to accept the return. If a seller says he doesn’t accept returns and sells a pair of shorts to someone and they just don’t fit the buyer, a buyer who knows how it works will say it wasn’t as described because the seller has to refund them..if the buyer just selects didn’t fit then it gives the seller the option to deny the return but then the buyer will most likely leave a negative feedback…eBay is trash between the fees, the new anything over $600 a year needs to be claimed and then having to pander to the buyer and they can do as they please while the seller always gets screwed..it’s a joke

It should be available for your to download on ebay. Find the return on ebay and you should see the option there.

I've had a buyer, on more than one occasion, start a return without contacting me first and request a return label from ebay before I can send them one of my own. For this reason, I don't allow free returns. So far, by doing this, most buyers contact me before they download an ebay return label.

After they contact you, do you still provide a label for them at your expense using Pirate Ship? That's one way I can under-promise and over-deliver!

@@peanut924 Most of the time l can resolve the problem without a return of the item, usually through a simple convo or sometimes with a small refund. If a return is necessary, then yes, I email a seller priced label to them. Knock wood, I don't get many requests for returns, I try very hard to be as accurate as possible in my listings just to avoid returns.

Disregard my first comment, I don't think you can import return labels to Pirate Ship, but have to do it manually.

Hi john, I refunded a buyer for an item that didn't work. The seller was not credited for his shipping cost. I don't want the item back, but I think he should get all his $ back. HELP...thnx

If you have free returns OR if your buyer opened a return such as item not described or item damaged, then the seller pays for the return label.

Questions: I’m an apparel seller and I get returns because they don’t fit customers, or they don’t like it, ETC. The problem I’m having is that eBay doesn’t allow me to upload my own label. They automatically send the customer their own label, either USPS or FEDEX, and the postage ends up being 9-15. This is ridiculously unfair as through ground it would be nearly 5, considering most of the items I sell are less than 12 oz. Is there any way we can fix that? I rather upload my own label all the time as opposed to have eBay automatically give them their desired label. I do offer free 30 day returns to keep my top rated plus status live also. Please advise, it’d be very appreciated :)))

Yes. When you first accept the return you should see an option to upload your own label to eBay. You may need to turn off automatic return acceptance in your settings. I go to FedEx directly or Pirateship, using the buyers address info, I create a label from then to me. Instead of printing the label I have it print as a pdf file that I save. eBay won’t allow you to send a pdf file so I have to open it and using the snipping tool in windows, I do a cutout of the label and save that file. I then upload the tracking number and this file into eBay. eBay sends this to the buyer to use for their label. I probably should do a video on this.

You aren't really saving here, you're spending. Sorry man, paying $22 to get back a potentially broken coffee maker still isn't worth it! Yes you can maybe sell some of the parts out to break even, but you are still paying good money to wait for a piece of work in the mail that you'll have to inspect & retest. You could just cut your losses and list something new, let it go. It's more economical to just accept loss and be done with it. It ain't easy to stomach but it's worth it, you will have a net gain of time! There's an old saying don't put good money into bad.

This is why buyers ask sellers for partial refunds. They know that sellers want to “cut their losses” and will reach out after using the item for 3 weeks (like in this case) and will fish for a partial refund. Playing for that $22 label won’t hurt my business and chances are they won’t bother sending it back. Returns are part of the game and taking 5 minutes out of my day to get the buyer a return label at a decent price isn’t going to kill me either. I am ok with the current return process and i will not enable buyers with partial refunds and will only offer that to my buyer if i screw up.

@@FlippinAintEasy I completely understand you don't want to enable buyers and the whole principle of the thing matter, it also makes me cringe. However, the numbers dont lie in my business I always come out ahead when the time & money can be spent sourcing and listing new items rather than spinning wheels with a toxic return.

@Cyndi LooHoo I just immediately block all buyers who request a return whether a legit case or not, they are blacklisted by blanket policy before anything else. I also believe the report buyer tool should always be used

@@FlippinAintEasy great answer. I will never reward a lyin' Buyer and after issuing the refund I hit "Report Buyer" so that eBay can start getting a track record of that buyer's returns! AND making that lyin' Buyer go through the steps deters them from even sending it back and if the label was never used you can get your money back from Pirate Ship.
