Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on Modern Warfare continues with a video asking if Crimea is really difficult to take, as we deduce how Ukraine may liberate the peninsula, possible strategy and the historical context. Previously in this series we explained why we call the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the War in Ukraine unprovoked, by going through various Russian claims and debunk them, including biolabs, NATO expansion, Nazis in Ukraine, a claim that Russia is fighting an existential threat, the so-call Donbas genocide and more ( • Why Do We Call the War... ), on the 15 Events that Defined the War in Ukraine ( • 15 Events that Defined... ) and on the possible vectors of the upcoming Ukrainian counter-attack ( • Where Will Ukraine Att... ). True. If UA takes Zaporizhzhia then more than likely by that point Russian lines have completely fallen apart. As stated in the video, taking that region would be the hardest part of the war for Ukraine. I wouldn't be surprised if after that point (assuming a victorious offensive) it only gets easier, or Russia decides now they want to seek peace

Apparently, Crimea goes deeper than strategy, resources and even prestige. It represents some kind of Russian romantic/spiritual ideal that has mythological overtones. Vlad Vexler (with a YT channel by the same name), is a political philosopher that has some excellent videos explaining this properly. In his mind there is no way the current Russian power-structure can survive the loss of Crimea.

Russians see Crimea as their own 'Greece.' The Eastern Orthodox Church originated there, the Greek colonies from thousands of years ago built the foundations of many of its cities, and during the Soviet era many Russian elites promoted vacationing there for its Mediterreanean like climate. On social media, I hear so much whining from Russians who loved going there for holidays and how nowhere in Russia compares to its beauty.

I love that you covered the history of the region in this one!! I read Tolstoy's Sevastopol Sketches years ago after looking for material on the Crimean War. Compared to other major wars in history, I feel like the Crimean War falls into the same category as the Korean War in the last century. Both were vastly geopolitically important and incredibly savage wars, that for some reason were largely forgotten in popular culture, likely because they were dwarfed by the major conflicts that came before them in the Napoleonic Wars and World War II. I absolutely love that you are covering current events, but it is even better for me when some additional history is blended into the narrative as you did with this episode!! This was brilliant, thank you!!!

I think they also get overshadowed by the wars that happened after as well. WW1 for the Crimean war and Vietnam for the Korean war. Though I will admit the ww1 overshadow is a bit of a stretch but, it feels like as an American our history books like to skip straight to WW1 after the Napoleonic war when talking about Europe.

A little bit of the cart before the horse here: Ukraine must retake Zaporizhzhia first, and they have a long way to go. If they can pull it off though I don't see a full scale invasion of Crimea as practical. Better to cut it off and apply constant pressure so the Russians just eventually leave like they did in Kherson. Edit 6/22: Ukraine just blew up the Chonhar bridge which seems to indicate they are prioritizing Zaporizhzhia's liberation and that they intend to isolate Crimea.

You neglected to account for the fact that Russia has a finite amount of money and weapons. Eventually everything will collapse and the Ukrainians can then run through Crimea like a knife through hot butter.

They won’t storm it until they have targeted every Russian base, airfield and ship on the peninsula and targeted the Crimea bridge to cut off all supplies from mainland Russia. Effectively a siege will starve the Russians out if they don’t run away.
@kairon5249
@kairon5249 10 ай бұрын
the reality is that if Ukraine is able to get troops to the crimean border, they have already won. They can just target the Kerch bridge with Himars or Storm shadow and now we have a Kherson 2.0, except on an even larger scale. Russia will only have ferries for troop supplies. because of this, they are forced to either retreat from crimea, run into huge logistical problems, or put too few troops to adequately defend the island.

Former tanker here. I think there is a misunderstanding of the difficulty of what the Ukranians are attempting. The attention on the Russian defenses has tended to focus on the obvious - trenches lightly manned by minimally trained, unmotivated soldiers and lightweight dragon’s teeth. Neither one is a serious impediment to the Ukranian armor. What is a serious impediment are most probably tens of millions of anti-tank mines in belts kilometers deep, covered by artillery. That takes a lot of training and combat engineer support to breech. You need enough resources to push multiple lanes that can support each other and have enough resources and leadership to keep pushing when you lose vehicles and men. I never trained for this as a tanker in Germany during the First Gulf War timeframe. We did go to Iraq (1st Armored Division). By the time my battalion crossed the border after the ground war started the sand berm and shallow minefields had been breeched and multiple lanes marked. Then our only real limitation in terms of speed of advance was our own logistics and one or two brief stands by Iraqi armor which were annihilated. We had air supremacy and every technical and tactical advantage. The Ukranians do not have that. Once they punch through the minefields I have no doubt they will rout the Russians. But breaking through will be difficult and I hope they have the trained manpower and enough specialized equipment. One thing I have not seen much of in videos during the war is use of smoke. You can get it through artillery smoke shells, smoke pots, vehicle smoke by spraying diesel on the exhaust manifold, or defensive smoke grenade salvoes fired from the smoke grenade launchers on the turrets of tanks and IFVs. I suspect most western armies stopped stockpiling smoke pots and maybe even smoke artillery shells to a large extent to save money. Those types of munitions would really help the Ukranians now.

Now you're talking about the nation which broke the spine of Panzerwaffe - the best armor forces the West ever had. With tankers like you it's no wonder Ukraine has no success in this offensive. Ukraine has lost close to 20% of it's original territory. Looking at it objectively ,it will never recover this territory let alone push into Crimea. If we want to be honest it is a miracle that they have not lost Odessa and with it all access to future maritime trade. The only reason that Ukraine holds till now is the unlimited Western financial and military aid. Yes the soldiers are willing to fight , but without the unheard of since WW2 military aid Ukraine would be capitulated by now. Ukrainian will to fight was the reason they avoided the initial capitulation during the initial Russian assault , but now it is Western support that holds the remnants of Ukraine together. Keep in mind that NATO objective is not for Ukraine to push into Russia as this would require tens of thousands Western troops and trillions of dollars and obviously it is an initiation point for WW3, but to maintain a long conflict to drain Russia from its supplies in a war that can potentially last for years. Also a note for the channel , you guys make good videos on average but you should maintain a neutral perspective when describing this war. In almost all your videos about Ukraine you present the events through a completely Ukrainian optimistic perspective .But you should be more invested into presenting the hard objective truth.

What do you mean mistake? The only mistake here is that NATO is not currently at war with Russia. Russia has to be forced to its knees, revolution and chaos must be spead, and only total war is guaranteed to lead to a possible end. Or do you want to live with a Russia with nuclear capabilities? They will use it as a threat like a child, so its best to call their bluff and force collapse of Russian sovereignity once and for all. However, it seems Ukraine is able to do just that, by liberating Crimea it might have an even more destructive effect on Russian leadership than facing a war with NATO. Russia is a serious threat to the human specie and must be defeated like any cancer, as they will kill us either way in the end, so the risk of nuclear war is just something we have to accept.
