Welcome back to part 2, if you haven’t seen part 1 we invite you to check it out so you can get up to speed on how we got to this point. We’re joining Frank and Sharon from Exploring Abandoned Mines and are deep underground in the Gold Drop Mine. This explore was definitely one of our favourites as we had the opportunity to see some amazing artifacts we’ve never seen before and are grateful to have had the opportunity.
Citizens of Phoenix once proclaimed their community was the highest city in Canada. For a while, in the early part of the 20th century it was a booming copper mining community on top of a mountain of copper. It once bustled with up to 4000 copper crazy citizens and had 20 hotels and saloons, gambling casinos, four churches, an impressive city hall, a covered skating rink, hospital, brewery, school, electric power company, telephone exchanges and even an opera house. The copper mine at Phoenix, owned by the Granby Company employed 1000 miners and when operations closed on June 14, 1919 it marked the end of a wild and memorable era in Canadian mining history that began in 1891 and ultimately produced 13,678,901 tonnes of ore. Meanwhile, Phoenix boomed until the copper market fell out in the late teens. When the last ore was shipped in 1919, thousands promptly excited the mountain city, most leaving behind their homes and belongings and Phoenix instantly became the largest ghost town Canada had ever seen.

That’s awesome!! Our two teens would never dream of doing it lol What exactly is high angle rescue? Sounds terrifying lol Frank has invited us out to try it, so we’re hoping to head that way in a few weeks. I probably won’t sleep until then haha.

probably more like the drier desert mines of death valley, which do change temps, because they are naturally ventilated. summer is warmer, winter is cooler.

Not here, we often have frozen parts in mines depending on the season. We were surprised to see this much ice in late August though!

I’ve always wondered how they got a massive ore cart in there? Is it brought in piece by piece and then built inside? Or somehow brought In already built
@AdventuresRUs
@AdventuresRUs Жыл бұрын
You’re correct :) Sometimes they were brought in and other times they were built on site. On this site, they were built at the blacksmith shop at the mine :)

Benefit, no dust masks needed. Bad, water/air destroys wood and metal. The ore carts are sad too see dying a slow death. I am still too scared to rappel with the gri gri and no back up. just a novice still. i always hope to use ropes just going down ladders, no gri gri then, just a autoblock and safety device back up the ladder. but thats Calif. Nev. desert only, get into any mountains, all bets off, assume dry rot. as it will kill you.

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment:) We see you’re almost at the 1000 subs, that’s exciting:) We’ve watched you do some sketchy climbing on ladders, but yes, ropes open up new doors and dangers! We’d love to explore some dry mines in better condition. You guys are fortunate to see the many things left behind, for us everything has rotted or is in the process lol
