This whole time I was thinking you were in Mass. Especially when your kid/helper said "wicked". I am down in Wilmington. Loving these videos.

Haha, I've been here 25 years and can't seem to get rid of the NY accent. We hit Ft Fischer periodically to get some surf fishing in!. Bought the Yamaha I put on the boat in Kure Beach!

The mix of chopped glass and thickened epoxy was the perfect choice for those holes. Can't think of anything more appropriate. Chopped glass should be a lot more commonly available and known. P.S. I see its a lot nicer weather in North Carolina than here in the Finger Lakes. I once built a 14 ft boat outdoors on the weekends in autumn here but it was a long time til spring allowed finishing. Like about May.
@ExtremeDIYGuy4 жыл бұрын
We get a longer warm weather period but the weather can turn in a second here and late spring through late summer the humidity and heat are killer!

Jose...a good way to check for delamination in composite/fiberglass is to use a nickel and tap along the surface...if you hear a dull thud, you have an inclusion. I was an aircraft mechanic back in the day and this is how we checked our fiberglass structures on the airframe...special tool that only cost the government a nickel ; ) ...imagine that, I saved the government some money...lol.
@ExtremeDIYGuy3 жыл бұрын
That's a good tip, thanks. Sound is a good way to check a lot of things, I use a similar technique to determine how much liquid is in a container if it isn't translucent enough to see. There is a discernable difference in there the liquid sits and where it is empty. The same principle would apply to delamination, giving you a distinctly different sound where there is a gap. I will definitely remember this on my next project. Thanks for saving us all a few tax $$$ lol.

Two questions, could I use the oscillating cutting blade on a power drill with some sort of adapter? And if not, could I cut away the excess foam with a chisel?
@ExtremeDIYGuy2 жыл бұрын
An oscillating blade on a multi tool or adapter should work fine. A chisel will probably just tear away large chunks so would avoid that. You can probably just sand the excess down with coarse sandpaper as well.

Looks great my Boston whaler is coming along too i have to media blast my deck so i get all the layers of old paint off that has built up over the pressed diamond non skid pattern or i might just grind down the non skid pattern so the whole deck is smooth. Then i have to make my front deck and bench ! Quick question do you use acetone on the area you are about to fair? I’m going to start fairing too !
@ExtremeDIYGuy4 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely. In a lot of cases I'll wash with dawn and ammonia and wipe it down with acetone right before doing any fairing or painting. Denatured alcohol works great as well,.
@lovetrump43713 жыл бұрын
Hi Jose, how much fairing compound did you use on your project?
@ExtremeDIYGuy3 жыл бұрын
I used the quart sized containers so makes a hakf gallon altogether. Had a bit eft over which is still usable too!

Great videos Jose but I have a question/observation. In 1966 Whalers were almost certainly built with a polyester resin (correct me if I'm wrong) and as advised by brother, who runs a very large boat yard here in Sothern California, epoxies and polyesters are not great with compatibility? Is that a concern? Or is the Total Boat epoxy strong and compatible enough to not worry about? Thank You.
@ExtremeDIYGuy3 жыл бұрын
You can apply epoxy over poly resin but not the other way around. At least that's my understanding. The poly won't adhere to epoxy althoguh there's several KZbin videos (boatworkstoday) that test that theory.

I'll be priming it with a two part epoxy and painting with Interlux perfection (2 part poly)
