I Adore Clan Ravnos and You Should Too | Vampire the Masquerade Lore

Just wanted to note, as I think this video came out around the same time as the player's guide, is that the player's guide gave the Ravnos an alternative bane that I, personally, love. Instead of bursting into flames, it's based around a Ravnos's "Embrace Name"(the name they went by during their Embrace, and very similar to a true name). If someone knows your Embrace Name and uses it against the Ravnos, the Ravnos's disciplines are weaker against said individual who used your embrace name. This makes their trickster angle more prominent without being tied to a stereotype, as well as allowing for some very creative naming conventions for the RAvnos. More importantly, it almost makes them kind of fae-like which I really enjoy, considering their unique discipline from V20 was based around fae/Changeling magic, because what a Ravnos did with Chimerstry had a direct impact on the dreaming. As in, if you used chimerstry to make illusory fire, to Changelings/FAe, that fire exists in the dreaming for them and can affect their Fee selves.

I think the players guide came out a bit before but I do really like the alternate curse here! I don't prefer a solid chunk of them due to the baggage from Caine personally giving the curse. Though there are some dope alternates, especially ones that might fuck with the chronicle mechanically. Like Ravnos. Also exactly like you said, it hits the trickster vibe in a more respectful way. Tbh its the best one they did in the players guide imo. I leave the alternate curses out since (to my knowledge) its a 5e specific thing outside the bloodlines and clan alternates. These videos serve to also help people who are getting into any of the editions. Which is why I mention version specific changes to mechanics.

As a Romani myself, I very much enjoy the ravnos, as their lore (while still having “hurrhurr gypsies steal-“ moments it did all tend to be more about close knit family, freedom and not being tied down, which is MUCH more what Romani are about, not theft that people through history and even today have to take up because of the way non Romani treat us. Honestly I read the “gypsy” book briefly I haven’t fully finished the pdf I found but there was actually some stuff I liked! Some of it hit too close to home sure, but some of it fit the Romani vibe pretty well especially the cool ‘origin’ lore where it kind of shows different Romani families who have ties to the different supernatural factions in the WOD.Obvs not the “you recharge your magic powers by stealing from people” stuff lol but there was upsides to it, regardless if making a real world people a playable class in the game was a good idea or not. I’d love to see you read it, one for the cool bits of the lore it proposes that I think was just overshadowed by the CLEARLY not right parts that I think for progressiveness’s sake, needs light shedding on it, so we don’t tread back over mistakes of the past- honestly me and my cousins howled with laughter at some of the things in that book haha things that living in England- had been said to us all our lives in school yards repeated to us in a ttrpg books words hahaha it was honestly kind of refreshing. So I loved how you handled this video and you should make a video on the gyspsy book! …. Unless you want me to use my Roma powers to contact my thirsty ravnos cousins! - Romani glueboy and VTM fan

I am glad to hear that it does have at least something of worth to it. Not surprised cause even at their worst White Wolf does still hit. Sure its gonna be sprinkled in-between some racism but like, its gotta have some bangin lore bits. Even if it was just personal enjoyment in reading it lol. And for a video on it tbh I think I'm just not the guy to cover it. I would prefer someone who is actually Romani to be making those points of what parts are chill and what aren't. I got zero irl exposure to anything Romani in my day to day life. I'm over in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. But also just that its not fully my tone of the channel. I don't think I could deliver that video with the actual knowledge, quality, and skill it would deserve in the first place. Thats not even just for that specific book by the way. There's a good few other books published by White Wolf that I would also put into that camp. Like the Charnel House supplement for Wraith. A book about the effects of the Holocaust on the setting. A great book (surprisingly and extra surprisingly more sensitive than you would think) but not for this channel. Saying all of that I do really agree that shedding a light on the fact that book does exist is a good thing. Burying it doesn't do much good. But I'll just have to save the idea for someone more academically minded then myself. I hope somebody does make a good video on the subject.

In my games. Players will have a revelation where all the clan founders are not innocent, and all of them conspire against Caine to dethrone him. It wasn't new when Caine was ruling Enoch. He had Vampires from both second and third that were dumb enough to challenge him and they all suffered a final death; but when he went into torpor, it was his closest advisors the clan founders whom Caine thought were his closest were actually waiting to betray him and those loyal to him. Sort of like how Caesar was betrayed by some of his closest friends in the senate. When they found Caine even when he was asleep, none of the Vampires could kill him due to his black aura protecting him while he slept. So they decided to bury him deep within the earth to make sure he would never rise from his sleep. Little did they know that Caine was almost godlike compared to the Antidelluvians who were immensely powerful themselves already, and managed to bust himself out of a mountain. When he came to the second city and found out all of the second and third-generation Vampires were loyal to him, and there were a lot more second and third-generation Vampires than what the book of Nod mentioned. Caine did not curse them with the clan banes, but the true meaning of his curse is devolution. Where each of the clan founders devolves over time into hideous mindless carnivorous monsters whose souls are reflected on the outside showing everyone who they are on the inside. Even the Toreador Antediluvian becomes a hideous grotesque monster that will hunger for the blood and flesh of their descendants when Gehenna comes. When Gehenna comes no Vampire is safe, becomes the older Vampirers that betrayed Caine so long ago will go on a gorge fest to eat any Human and Vampire that moves.

When I played VtM, in ages past, Ravnos was kind of funny clan for me as I kind of wanted to play them because there was something really appealing about the feel. However, even in those times, there was just something really, really... queasy about how hard they embraced every negative stereotype of the Roma people. Like it was Jesus Christ level when you started reading through the material.

I played in game set between 1988-2020. And my character is Assamite Antitribu, we being task to hunt down an Thinblood Ravnos who being snooped too much. We being in train car to car until we reach him but before he about to undo him, we all being struck by powerful wave of energy, as whole World burning down then from the fire we saw people burning run into us, we fight it throughout but we all saw him, it ! Survived the bombs . Zapathasura still standing. Before the sun set upon him, and all my pack fall sleep expect my character with earlier riser merit to close the door before sun reach us, and he saw the Ravnos no longer a Thinblood but a full blooded crying in the corner , and my character fall into the sleep

I played our only Ravnos. When i took over storytelling, i went through with the WoN... only survivors are a small number of loose cannons and the brahman of india. They captured my vamp. Put him in torpor, and use him too keep Daddy Rav locked down. Now i got a new group of neonates... with some old members coming back, after our current chronicle we will be doing the "quest too get back Trennt Phuri Dai (and all the money he owes us)" chronicle. (Some also have the "NAW, aint nobody killing that MFer but ME!!" angle)

Addition: I play heavy into the Zaph story as well. Heavy into Hindu culture. I own WoD G. I use it too let my players know "you can't play this clan without a ton of research. I will not let this culture be used as a stereotype." I also enforce heavy research for Malk players. I don't like "I am just crazy" mindsets. 5e did add the daredevil thing, and now even in my game (revised? Anniversary? I got the black book with the artbook and ver useful bookmark lol), that is how I portray the visible clan. Deep clan? Your gonna have too catch a nightflght for India bro.

As someone playing a Malk rn, very true. Gotta have intent and something interesting behind that. I'm happy that mine landed so well in my game tbh. My vamp Ted, has hyper specific schizophrenia where if something is relating to his weird set of rules and logic it is fully sentient and can speak to him. Basically the whole vibe is playing Disco Elysium in VtM. A concept I'm happy that the rest of my players like and are invested in keeping tabs with how their belongings view them. Even though its just Ted's subconscious opinions. But either these delusions are either full on delusions or his mind's method of sifting through the more naturally heightened future sight abilities/ madness network abilities. That and the secondary role as the player with the most experience with the setting and game. Which means I can use Ted to in character give lore details or weird lore knowledge without breaking anything. Our characters have been vamps for long enough to know it anyways but I'm one of the few people at the table that actually *knows* it though.
