A Nigerian man tried to scam me recently. Tried to convince me he was American. Told me he loved me. We spoke we on the phone. He had a west African accent. I tried to explain he doesn't sound American at all. I also explained I am South African (though I live in China) so I am very familiar with the accents on the continent. I eventually got bored stringing him along. Asked he if he was a "Yahoo boy". He blocked me immediately 🤣🤣🤣

I just blocked a Mr Martine from Utah working on a contract with Exxon in Chicago. Wife died 6 years ago and a 10 year old daughter being looked after by Nanny. 3 months this was going on and I did fall in love, but luckily for me my intuition and research won.

So am I. I was very nearly pulled in by a scam a few years ago. I very quickly pulled myself out of it! Thank God I got smart from the very beginning. The red flags really stand out: they call you endearing names like honey, darling, sweetheart, etc.; use stolen photos from other people's Facebook accounts; and ask for huge sums of money - which you obviously don't have - before you've even met them! Hardest part of the scam is to find the person that want to live in fantasy land. Even if someone doesn't know about romance scams should use common sense. Never give money to people you don't know or have never met. I don't give money to absolutely no one. Not even family members. People love to promise they will pay you back but they rarely do. Also, rich people know other rich people and have relationships with their banking partners. They don't need to ask strangers for money. I do feel so bad for people that are so lonely that they will do anything for "love".

Dang!! That poor lady. I feel so bad for her! It's a different world than the one I grew up in where people were mostly honest, had integrity and you could trust someone on their word. It's not that world anymore. Now everyone needs to do due diligence, internet searches, look for signs of lies and Never Ever Ever take a strangers word on blind faith! It's why I refuse to join any dating sites and my FB page is locked down tight. I prefer the company of a few close friends, family members and my animals to meeting strangers. I thank everyone for sharing their stories because it really will keep some people from making those same mistakes and maybe even save lives. These are painful life lessons we all need to learn from. Yup, I also remember a time where most people were honest. Now we have to be paranoid, can't believe a word anyone says - we can't even believe someone when they tell us their name (as I had to find out the hard way!). It's an unnatural situation and this leaves me all alone, unable to make friends or find a husband because whenever I tried, I came across liars, scammers and abusers so all I have learned is never to trust anyone no matter how long I've known them - and anyone can suddenly turn out to be an abuser, not just potential love interests but also people who pretend to be friends. It's a sad world now where we can't even trust the people we know because so many people now play an act even for extended periods of time, only waiting for a chance to stab someone in the back (often literally!), use and abuse someone, take advantage of someone. It's a far cry from the world I still remember where friends would - and often did! - give their last shirt for their friends and stood by their friends, spouses and family members no matter what!

@@LittleKitty22 Yeah, many years ago I had a budding romance with a co-worker I now like to call "The Sweetheart Swindler". He tried to get me to sell my house and give him large loans. I refused so he moved on to another girl in the work place where she fell head over heals for him and spent her entire 401K money on him, buying him cars and motorcycles,..and lost her home as well. When all the money was gone, so was he. He moved on to someone else who had some money in the bank. I am soooo glad I only got a little heart ache at the time when I found out he was just after money. I'm sure he's still out there sweeping women off their feet and draining their bank accounts. I was actually the one that got away. Anyone wants money from me, they need to go to the bank and get a loan instead. ;-)

Glad to see you avoided being scammed out of money! I wasn't so lucky, in my case it wasn't a budding romance but I actually believed I was married to the guy, only to find out he was only after the visa to the West, was married already, had used a fake identity to "marry" me and that I wasn't married at all. He didn't so much scam me but he downright stole all my life savings and there was nothing I could do, police even said he could do that because on the paper I was "married" to him! When one cannot even trust the person one believes one is married to - then there is no hope left, and I don't think I could ever have a relationship or get married because I could never trust anyone enough. Sad times we are living in, very sad times indeed!

I hope she filed a complaint with the FBI's IC-3 Unit. Years ago I spoke with the bureau director and she said they were aware of these scammers and most of their locations. She said they need people to file complaints so that they can request funding to take them down. PLEASE tell people to file complaints. Here's the website: www.ic3.gov/default.aspx I was fortunate. I learned about these scammers (catfish) watching an episode on Dr. Phil. I did some research. Ironically, the next day a man named Bill (I don't remember his last name) contacted me. I knew immediately that he was a Catfish. Widow with a young daughter, stationed in Afghanistan. Immediate flirting, he was lonely, I was beautiful, etc. He called me 'dear.' I knew that was because scammers work many scams at a time and they don't want to use the wrong name. I told him not to call me a term of endearment, to call me by my first name. If he slipped up I reminded him to call me by my first name. It actually tickled me that I was wasting his time and making things difficult for him. His English wasn't good. He sent loving messages which I googled and found that they came from a website full of messages that people could copy and paste. I wanted to see for myself how they operated, so I led the guy on. I didn't tell him about his mistakes, as I didn't want to help him be a better scammer. I led him on for 3 months. Of course he asked me for money, so he could buy a cell phone. He said he was using a borrowed one and could get one for a good price at the PX. I sent the money knowing it was going to a scammer. He said to send it to his 'agent' in Texas. So, I checked her out, too, knowing she wasn't who was pictured on her FB page. I knew there was no such thing as agents in the army. I kept a record of everything. He tried the "my daughter (who was living with his mom in New York) is sick and needs medical attention but his mom couldn't afford to take her ." I asked a lot of questions & researched what he said was wrong with her. I told him his mom could take her to the ER and they would treat her. I stopped him at every turn. I asked where he was stationed and he gave me the name of a real base. I researched it and learned the soldiers couldn't leave the base because it was too dangerous. I watched a video of sn armored vehicle drive through the town and point out the danger zones. So, when he told me that he and a few friends went into the city to a restaurant, that was something else he had to explain away. I pretended to believe him. I ran his photo through a free facial recognition program and it was a stolen photo being used in many names across social media. One day I got a message from a woman on facebook saying she noticed that I was friends with Bill and they were getting close, was he legit. I messaged her my phone number and said "call me - he's not legit." She called and I told her the story. It was time to end the charade. I messaged Bill and told him that I knew from the beginning that he was a Catfish. I learned a lot from him about how they work. I told him I was filing a complaint with the FBI. Last, I posted a notice on his page warning that this man was a Catfish, with enough info for women to be forewarned. He removed his profile, of course. I can usually recognize a Catfish immediately. I sometimes string one along for a few weeks to take up their time and frustrate their efforts. Again, I've learned their mistakes but don't want them to know what they are. I want them to keep screwing up. Thank you for what you do!

Out a total of $45,000.00 Investigator said his email was traced to Nigeria. He said once they find out their not in this country there's nothing that can be done!

@@carolwilcox5135 I'm so sorry this happened to you. Most of these scams originate in Nigeria. It's a cottage industry there. One of the first indications is that they call you 'dear' or some other term of endearment, so they don't make a mistake with names. I insisted that they call me by my name. Please file a complaint with the FBI's IC-3 Unit. Until there are enough complaints filed they won't get the funding they need to shut these operations down. The bureau director told me they've ID'd their locations and have permission of the Nigerian government to arrest them but they need the funding to be able to do it. Oh dear, this lady needs to just chat to people she knows IRL online. She absolutely has no concept of when she is being scammed. It was the _same_ scammer, over and over and over again and I think she still doesn’t get it. Scammers used my pics to catfish someone and the victim was like this lady, he couldn’t separate me from the scammer and thought he was in love with me, that he knew me, but I’m a victim and a stranger. I've heard of this before some of the story details are very familiar. I've had quite a few people try to pull the same on me. If it sounds outrageous don't believe. And they keep putting off meeting you. The minute there is a terrible need for you too send them money is the minute you block them. They are all over the place..now they even make a comment on one of your Facebook posts and at tell you you're pretty and ask you to add them as a friend. Don't do it. This story is really despicable, these scammers i pray will get karma... this poor poor women, they took her through every emotion possible, the worst being grief, i think we can all accept rejection but once you get feelings that come with grief, they are hard to come back from. I hope she is better now a little time has passed 🥰

Why would a doctor answer a phone on the hospital's main line? Haven't people ever heard of receptionists? And I gotta wonder how these scammers answered this supposed hospital's main number; did they just say Hello or give the name of the hospit like a real hospital would?

I've encountered many who will answer with the name of the hospital. They set up phone numbers just for the specific company, hospital or whatever role they need to play out the story.

A comment of warning. Check your Facebook page and find out who is following you. I find scammers from Nigeria. Ghana! Other people can SEE that. It’s a crazy world. Added: A person can follow you and does not have to be approved by anyone.

Found this out on Pinterest. Had 89 followers in one day. Never been accepted by me. Had to go one by one and delete. One of them froze my computer. Had to get professional help. How can they follow one without ones approval.? It blows my mind. Than he/ she has the nerve to show up on u tube in the comment section , same name. It pays to be underestimated..... Same male pic,. But this time pretended to be a women. All holy moly, hated scammers sooo much. She / he is so pitiful is pathetic. Ghana resident.

Some aspects of this story ring true for me. Even though I realized I was being scammed I still thought the photos I received of him was him. Several weeks later on a whim I did a reverse image search on the most recent photo that he had sent to me. Lo and behold I found several matches. I was completely shocked to find out the photo was stolen. The shock was so severe that I had an out of body experience.

How could she of lied to her sister though? To make her an accomplice in the scam? Its so frustrating because when these people give over money, we all lose. I just wish people could be content just being alone. What they really need is therapy to learn to accept themselves just as they are... I do feel bad but its incredibly frustrating.

The thing I don’t get and this happens in all the stories, the scammer cant get access to money (frozen account, only them at the bank can withdraw money) and needs the victim to send money. But then turns around and buy and get stuff (ring, flowers, money orders for work, or apparently $300). Doesn’t that ever hit the victim?

I lost my husband of 32 years...went thru 6 years of hellish grief...and probably still not done...please...don't be so hard on these women...I was scammed twice...the second time...I knew...but loneliness will take its toll...in 4 years...I've dealt with over 100 scammers...how many reinvented themselves...There is no way of knowing...so many scams...I had a guy offer to get my money back...ain't gonna happen...its gone...my scammer came into the grief chat room and approached me there...lol...everything else much the same...They come back...over and over...just take your time...they will show their colors...and I'm sorry this has happened to any of you...be strong...be safe...b
