I am loving the weekly (Saturday) Ike Gauntlet videos. It may be a challenge to come up with 52 different videos per year, but I for one appreciate this commitment. Having Mr. Truck tell Andre that he is the "new" Mr. Truck is a huge compliment to Andre's ever growing truck knowledge. Lastly, for these Ike Gauntlet videos, it would have been nice at the end of the uphill climb to see the following gauge readings: 1. Coolant temperature 2. Transmission temperature 3. Oil temperature All 3 of these readings are critical when towing, and a quick view of the gauges or mention of these readings would be beneficial! Just my 2 cents. Great video!

They cool very quickly at the top as it levels out and the load drops; the more useful temps are at the end of the steepest part of the run, when it had been running hard to maintain speed and thus build heat it the process.

There’s one big problem with your “toughest test”: you need to do them in the summer, in hot weather. Since I was a kid cooling a hard-working engine is the achilles heel of trucks towing/hauling up grades. You guys never tested the new Tundra (if memory serves) in hot weather up the Ike which would show how all the cooling engineering works. You’ve also seen other pickups overheat, despite being brand new and not maxxed out on the Ike in warmer weather. Consider Your Ways! Love Andre. He’s what makes the channel worth watching.

That was a great run up the Gauntlet! It was a very rare case where the power required by the load was exactly matched by the power available from the engine at WOT. Andrei must have felt great after holding the throttle WFO for 8 minutes. It's every man's fantasy.
@jnk26
@jnk26 Жыл бұрын
Drive a semi that's always loaded at 140k, you get bored after 20 miles. Let alone years of driving. It's not a dream to work something to death. Now WOT on a 13-15L diesel vs any gas engine is entire world of difference. My 2020 6.7L powerstroke makes more than 1000lbft from 1400-2400rpm(more useful over the usable range). In the 2 years I've hD this truck(and the 2 years with the prior 2019 6.7) I never had to floor it or even ask for WOT, or 100% engine load on a diesel(no throttle plate)
@302Mustang13

I've driven a fully loaded V8 truck and trailer up the I-80 pass just east of Salt Lake City and it's actually a bad feeling being floored and running 5,000+rpm up the mountain and over the pass. It would be nice to have some extra available. This poor Hemi was working way to hard.

@Jerome The Mechanic in all honesty keeping g the engine in the 1400-2400rpm Band nets faster acceleration the torque is what doing the work. This truck runs from 60mph to the speed limiter in a little over 7 seconds. It's idiotic how's fast the 9000lbs f250 gets up to speed. Makes the 5000lb 400hp/500lbft F150 feel slow. Can't wait to trade up for a 1200lbft F350 is late 2024. If you go back an watch all of the IKEs you will see a pattern. Every truck falls back in the rpm range to its peak torque, then downshifts(increasing the leverage through gearing) then lugs back again to the peak torque. Now the reason the EB and turbocharged engines walk up the IKE is because they have far higher peak torque at a lower rpm(500lbft@3000 vs 460lbft@4100 and 410@4100) this is also why theb3.0 diesels get better MPG, the peak torque is available(more work with less rpm) and pull effortlessly. We all have this affliction with rpm. 475hp@2600rpm is 959lbft but 485hp@6100 is 418lbft(392Hemi). We all assume that 485hp is better than 475hp. But make both engines do the same amount t of work(move the same mass) and you will clearly see which is more capable. Like a 240hp 7.3 powerstroke vs the 240hp 2l S2000 engine. Put that's S2000 engine in the truck chassis and prepare to be disappointed. 240hp@8900 is 141lbft. That 7.3 has more torque at idle tha. The S2000 engine has a t WOT

@jeromethemechanic6871 Жыл бұрын
@@jnk26 I am sure you have a good understanding of power and torque from handling a semi! The new diesels are really amazing. I saw a 2023 in the grey today and it looked sharp. I drive a 2000 7.3 and you are correct, once it gets in its power band it has some get up and go.

Good to see Mr. Truck back for the Ike runs. I have a couple suggestions for the weekly runs. 1) tow the same weight with the same truck but with multiple trailer types. So for example if you tow 10,000 pounds on an open trailer, tow an enclosed trailer at 10,000 pounds and compare the differences. This will be good information for people to see what a difference the type of trailer makes in towing performances. 2) allow viewers to come and take a shot at the Ike like you all have done with Tumble Weed. I’d love to do it but I’m in East Kentucky and thousands of miles away.

Good to see Gaunlet videos again, and It would be even better to see the new in-line 6 in the grand wagoneer vs the 6.4 V8 (I think you promised you would) on a similar or slightly less weight 8500-9500 lbs?

Now THIS was a great video! It would have been a little better if we saw the pressure and temp gauges at the top of the Ike. I’m not sure why you guys decided to use the Rebel which is more of an off road truck with limited cargo weight and lower towing capacity than say a Big Horn. But good show! Mr Truck, in reference to taking away points for passing a vehicle going up the Ike, if the other vehicle is going slow enough to pass then what’s the issue? I would have liked to see the Bighorn with that same motor and those 3:92s on that run because the extra weight of the rebel had its drawbacks on the run. The Big Horn being the more common truck without so many frills, and thus less weight, would likely have done a little better. Keep up the good work guys! Still my go to vids for everything truck! Andre and Kent…. keep ‘‘em coming!

They take the truck the manufactures give them to test, if you want to buy a bighorn and give it to them to test they probably would like that.

Does the CAI and performance exhaust increase the hp and torque? Wouldn’t Ram promote those higher numbers? They still say it has 395hp & 410 ft pounds of torque. Or does it just give it more sound?

I really like this video.. Andre, Mr. Truck, and the Ike 👍🏼 Can you test a Ram 2500 Cummins on the Ike? I would really like to see Alex’s Ram 2500 on 37” tires or the Trailhound do this. I would like to put 37” tires on a Ram 2500 so I’m curious how it would perform towing. Thanks

These videos are one of the reasons I stick with my Ecoboost F150. Ram has better ride, nicer interior and better pricing. I could get a fairly loaded Laramie for what I pay for my XLT. But I have almost 1900 pounds payload and the Ecoboost at elevation tows so much better. I have the extra power to pass people going up the mountains when it’s open for passing.
@dor1tomcswagger69
@dor1tomcswagger69 Жыл бұрын
What's your mileage though? I've seen Ecoboosts towing at 3000 rpm but the mileage is worse than a V8 revving high because boost is maxed. Turbo engines are not supposed to rev high for long periods of time that's what the turbos are for but you get worse mileage
@bobdennis4801
@bobdennis4801 Жыл бұрын
@@dor1tomcswagger69 mileage is fairly poor. I get 10-12. I can get 13 if I keep it below 70. But it’s also not running at 3000 rpms. It’s running around 2200 in 9th gear if it’s hilly but mostly it’s around 2K in 10th. That’s towing 6k with a pickup full of people and gear. Empty I can get 22 though. And with a 36 gallon tank go quite a ways.
@tannerstap1
@tannerstap1 Жыл бұрын
People worry about RPMs too much. Other than fuel and keeping it in the operating range, no problems. Had a chev express work van loaded with tools , that had to haul a big work trailer. 4400 rpm’s for a few hours, governed at 70 mph, just stopping for fuel. Thing had 220,000 on it before the other fleet vehicles came in.

They're 150s pre 1994, what era are you talking about carbureted, TBI, MPFI? There were a lot of years the "1st gen" covers, there's pre 1972 and post 1980. I towed 8 thousand with a 1991 W150 318 automatic transmission in the Appalachian mountains. I can certainly tell you new trucks blow the doors off of the old ones, the lack of power and gears in comparison is significant.

I know functionally the grade hold is doing what it can. I sure would pick a few more brake applications over listening to that screaming all the way down. I know, it's not the test, but that just sounds stressful.
