TAS is basically a computer/recording playing the game (most of the time) the way it was programmed/recorded to do it. This TAS was a complete show-off - after completing objectives, funny stuff was added instead of patiently waiting for elevators and other timed events, so a lot more was done than what was actually needed to solve a level.
@SebastianWeinberg2 жыл бұрын
Yes. With tool assistance, a speedrunner can, for example, try an extremely difficult and precise shot or a glitch with a degree of randomness hundreds of times, until they manage to get it just right, and then select _only that one attempt_ where it worked perfectly to the end of the recorded run and continue from there. When the tool later spools off the recorded sequence and shoots through the game like crazy, it can be hard to follow. TA speedruns are not so much about showing off your skills as a twitch-gamer (though that can be part of it), as they are about showing off your skill at finding and chaining exactly the right sequence of tricks to shave precious milliseconds off the record, even if each trick in the sequence took you thousands of tries, over several days of obsessive gaming, to pull off _once._
@fazerer80222 жыл бұрын
That's not completely true, the tas actually does trigger the ending elevators really early but does so from beneath them to avoid entering them which traps it inside. Then it does a bunch of crazy shots to achieve something else that will benefit it in the next chamber, usually getting a camera in position to get a speed boost at the start of the chamber. Therefore, the tas is not just to show off cool tricks that are useless but it is actually the fastest tas that exists right now.

Yes, this enables them to put portals in places that would normally be unhelpful or even deadly to go through, peeking out _just_ far enough to be considered "on the other side" and thus able to shoot another portal, then pull back just enough to be considered "on this side" again when the portal projectile hits, so that they don't get ejected forwards out of the closing portal. Repeat as necessary. This trick can also be used in a… less frenetic manner, during normal, non-speed-running gameplay.
@Bunny99s2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's called to "peek a portal". though there are different approaches. The safest variant is usually going back where you have a safe standing point while the portal is travelling. With this strategy you always shoot the same portal (the portal your lookout out of). The other technique is to shoot alternating portals and stay on the side. You can actually stand in a portal. However when you replace one of the portals the game tries to push you out of the portal. However you can run against this force and stay inside without falling out. However this is a lot trickier and more dangerous. So in essence for example you're standing inside the portal, looking out the orange portal and shooting a new blue one. When it hits the game tries to push you out of orange but you push against to stay inside. Now you can peek out of blue and shoot a new orange from the new blue's position and repeate the process. When both portals are at insecure positions, this is actually a better way because quickly going back and staying inside the portal at the same time is quite tricky. Still possible but much harder. The ways to get actually out of bounds (OOB) are almost always the same. You have to find a place in a level where the designers didn't paid enough attention to the safety margin at the corners of walls. As you may know the portal has a cuboid trigger volume with the size of the portal around the portal. When you touch this trigger, you're considered inside the portal and can actually transition through it when you pass over the plane of the portal. The game punches a hole into the wall so you can actually move "into" the portal. However if you're not in the center you usually collide with the walls around the portal, so you can not get past the portal plane. When the edge of a portal is close to the edge of a wall (and as I said, the margin is small enough), the trigger volume will actually slightly expand over the edge of the wall. So you can simply walk past the wall and still touching the trigger volume. This would teleport you to the other side of the portal. The trick is, you keep your relative position to the portal when you transition. That means since you're actually beside or under / over the portal, you will "exit" the portal with the same offset. So when the exit portal is placed with the right edge to the edge of a room, you actually end up behind that wall, outside the level geometry. The re-entry into the inside of the level can be done in various ways. In theory you could find a similar spot in the outside geometry to do the same thing in reverse. However the most simplest solution is the fizzler at the exit (where you usually want to get back into the level in order to load the next level). When you place a portal directly above the fizzler, jump into it and at the same time replace the other portal. What is happening is that the portal is closing for a short moment but you're already half way into the portal. Since the portal is closing you would again collide with the normal world geometry and the fizzler itself. This will close your portals immediately. When you're half way stuck in world geometry the game usually pushes you in bound. I've done this years ago for the challange map 15. It's a crappy old video, but when someone's interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5TZioZ-jdCVb8k When you pay attention I place the blue one on the ceiling so edge of the portal is touching the wall above the elevator exit. Once I got the camera, I place the orange one on that wall as close to the bottom edge as possible. With help of the camera (pressing e and jumping) you can actually jumpt high enough to touch the orange portal volume and we're already behind the orange portal plane. What happens is that we are directly ported behind the wall since we exit the blue portal but offset by a whole portal height. You actually get stuck in the geometry outside, but placing a new portal on the outside fixes this issue. Now we can simply peek a portal to the end. Since you don't have a good direct view to the end, I replace it 3 times to have a good view from above of the exit portal. There I do the fizzler re-entry. I was slow as hell :) I saw people doing this in just a couple of seconds

The weird colors you see sometimes in the glitched run are from seeing the void (the outside of the map) from the inside of the map. When inside the map, the next frame is just drawn over the initial one without erasing everything to black, because the void isn't supposed to ever be exposed. If you glitch the game in a way where the void does get exposed, this causes geometry to "smear" in the void when you move the camera, and post-processing effects like HDR constantly apply to the void without being reset, which is where those bright colors come from

To be clear, they're not just "bouncing around". It's called bunny hopping. In some games' engines, there's a weird quirk about them where if you jump, then when you land, jump again while strafing and turning either left or right, you will gain momentum. That's why you see them turning slightly left and right as they repeatedly jump. If you watch people play games like Quake you'll see it there too. Originally this was an unintended side effect of how certain engines worked. But in some games it's actually in the game intentionally.

In the first speedrun, the reason the guy is zooming through chambers is because of the "Portal-peek" where you shoot a portal then quickly go back through the portal, and so it's used to get through areas like test chamber 19 easily. And in the second one TAS, he (the bot) is using something called the "edge glitch" where you place a portal on the edge of a surface and save and reload, and basically, very simplified, your camera is in one place, but your actual model is in another place, so you can do some really crazy out of bounds stuff. the channel Msushi goes in depth with a lot of this stuff, so you should check out his videos. Some people discover glitches by brute forcing the game to glitch or by coincidence, there's even glitch hunters. After all the ground work is done people start "routing" the games and testing the routes in order to find/create the most efficient route possible. One the tools used for this is TAS, they take the routes and play the game at a lower fps in order to make the most precise inputs possible and then record in what exact frame to execute that input (and that for every input in the route) and then they give those recorded commands to a tas program and let the program play the game. That is the result.
@fazerer80222 жыл бұрын
slight correction, the tas isn't a humam playing at a lower fps, it's a script that a plugin called spt reads through and performs all the inputs on the specific ticks. This means that when someone makes a tas, they have no indication of the result until they play through the whole script. This makes the tasing process very tedious. For example, the first 6 seconds of gameplay took the creator ~30 hours of trial and error to get the perfect trajectory to land in front of the ending elevator.

aww Deebee, you're not irrelevant. What would the world be like without the now infamous Sinister Beans playthrough? That said, you need to read Lab Rat, and playthrough Aperture Desk Job.

There is a video made by IGN in which DEVs are reacting to the same speedruns. it worth watching if interested in game design or just like to see them confused as you were xD

Should definitely listen to the Doug Ratt man audio, the Borialis site, and eventually how it connects to Half Life

DB should watch one of the rings where they take the companion cube all the way to the end.
