I used to know a guy who did that kind of crap. I had a friend who was struggling financially at the time, but who had helped me immensely when I was struggling. So, I'd take him to a nice restaurant a few times a week, and cover his meal, since it was something I could do that was within my means, and that he'd accept. Well, a similar situation with a friend of a friend happened. His roommate's "friend" would invite himself over to their house, and when I'd show up to pick up my buddy, would invite himself to dinner as well, order something expensive, and eat a tiny portion of it because he "wasn't all that hungry". And of course, I would have to pay for it, since he couldn't. It eventually came to a head when he started straight up stealing from people, since bumming off them wasn't enough for him. He eventually burned all his bridges, because he got caught stealing from his brother, and tried to beat the crap out of him because he wouldn't just give him money. So, he ended up being kicked out of the last place that anyone would let him stay... And ended up offing himself in the park one day. Which then led to the standard funeral discussions of "I wish I could have been a better friend to him." To which, my response was "A better friend to a mooching thief? Sure he's dead, but nobody liked this guy for GOOD REASON."

S4: NTA. OP has been hurt by the actions, including those of his ex, and has a right to self deprecating humour. But, one thing that needs to be thought about. If she is so adamant that he didn't turn her lesbian (which, of course, he didn't), is she over reacting because she entered into the relationship with him knowing she was gay/bi and didn't tell him? I have seen several really horrible situations where one despicable person went out with another to 'confirm' that they were in fact not straight. I have to wonder if this is one of them.

Story 3: Sorry for dual comments, but I feel this one. :-) My birthday and Christmas are two weeks apart. I've eternally gotten screwed on one or the other. "Now this gift is for your birthday AND Christmas, dear!" I've then done that back to them (one of whose birthday is in July) until they got the point. Some never do. And in this case, there's a distinct dichotomy in fuss and appreciation as well. One is always fully allowed to feel whatever one wants to. So of course NTA. But quite apart from that, the difference in appreciation and attention, not to mention the insensitivity of combining the two, is just ridiculous! Dump the chump and find somebody who appreciates you, dear. You deserve better. Even in the final update, he's trying to gaslight you. Expensive gifts aren't the point, making a big deal about it is the point. And he's clearly not doing that.

So many times they would not be using their legal name for tax purposes and couldn't understand why we needed their real be to send payments and report tax info.

When I lived in Thailand, I learned this about the names real quick teaching English. Our class roster would have each student’s proper name, but since they go by their nicknames I would spend the first class doing an activity or two to learn the nicknames and jotting them down next to their actual names on my roster. My ex was Thai, I won’t say his actual name but it started with a ‘j’ and had 6 letters (not a common at all, in fact, many people would be guessing as they sounded it out, very rarely did a Thai person see his actual name and be able to pronounce it on the spot. Anyways his nickname that everyone, even his mom and dad and little brother, was ‘Ob’ which doesn’t translate to an actual word. It’s the sound a frog makes lol

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but from what I gather, and Thailand their birth names tend to be long and complicated, to the point where they mostly go around by their nicknames which tend to be short and succinct. Story 3: this one has so many levels and most people involved only scratch the surface. The real problem lies with the mother seemingly tying attention/love to gifts. No wonder the guy showers his mom in gifts, he wants her love so badly. He's not a mommy's boy, it's way more messed up than that. With OP, he probably hoped he'd found someone who lives outside of that cycle. Too bad she doesn't. She makes the same mistake as her bf, thinking gifts equal love. Now he has two women in his life he needs to overindulge on a high level, because his mom surely won't accept a lower level now and he'll need to match it for his gf. I'll go with ESH on this one, because even though OP mentions all the dots, she seems unable to connect them and see where her bf's true issues lie. She needs to show him that love isn't shown with gifts, not add to the narrative.

Usually, no one cares, though it may be worth mentioning that when I do it, I do it in a "I'm so gay I ended up dating girls even when I was trying to date boys" way, not a "I made my exes trans" way.

In story one the biggest thing everyone is harping on is the family disowning him part. While honestly the matter of pay should’ve been discussed before even eating. And yeah separate checks should’ve been established. He kept laughing after she made it clear that she didn’t want to pay for him. She really should’ve not said anything. Went to the counter. Only paid her her share. And left both of those guys to themselves.

In many asian countries they have other names, specially if they work with people that are not asian, it's very common, per sample, in taiwan and china to have names in english, my taiwanese friend english name is Alex, and his own name is nowhere near that

Nick name culture in Thailand is wierd and many people receive one the day they are born. Some children grow up not knowing their legal name till they're much older. It can make it hard to reunite lost children with their parents.

As a queer woman, I find that last story hilarious and agree its self deprecating humor. Something like that is discouraging and I understand how he feels tired of it and don't blame him and I understand his feelings post edit. There's a big difference in what OP said and those dumbasses who are so smug when they say shit like, "You've never been with the right man," or "I'll fuck you straight," kind of thing. His ex is overreacting I feel.

Honestly as a bisexual woman I think the “turning women gay” thing is hilarious... I can see how the ex specifically might be offended, but she probably overreacted tbh

Hey I’ve been watching your videos for a while (bout 2 months) I know the chances that you see this are one in the couple hundreds of comments that will be in this video but back onto the point. I think that if you added a animation over a song audio might make your videos more lively then they already are. Btw love the vids keep up the good work you always make my day a tiny better don’t stop this any time soon your a amazing person

Man the story about the boyfriend showering his mother with gifts and love and affection on her birthday and then doing barely anything for his girlfriends birthday reminds me of my ex. He withheld physical and emotional affection as a form of control over me because he knew how much it hurt me down to my core. He did things ike wait until my birthday and then fly his daughter out and spend ALL the money he'd put aside for my birthday money (started out at around $400 but kept going down until I was gone) on stuff she didn't need plus his whole $3000 paycheck on top of the plane ticket he bought. I was still trying to fruitlessly prove myself to him at this point so I let him spend my money on her as well, drive her around in my car and take over our home that I paid for. This was all on top of the plane ticket he had already bought for her last minute because for whatever reason it HAD to be on my birthday, he couldn't wait to get a cheaper ticket after my birthday even though it was summer time and she had the entire summer to be able to come down. Did her mother lift a finger or send one penny to help pay for anything? OF COURSE NOT! She was too busy leeching not only off my man but her new man as well. Then when I'd beg for his affection, he'd say he's just not that kind of guy, meanwhile being all types of lovey dovey cuddly sweet with his teenage daughter that suddenly became the woman of MY house and shoved me to the outside. It still makes me absolutely sick and lived just thinking about that piece of shit. He was such a mind fuck.

Ohh boy the 2nd story is very cringe for me because in my home country there is a very commonly found name that if you shout in the middle of the street you are more than likely to get a response from several people. I can only imagine what sort of a hurricane of trouble it would bring if people here used their nickname to sign up and what sort of hunger game scenario they would have to go through to prove it's their room.

This doesnt change the fact the OP is NTA but there is actually some interesting context for the whole nickname thing. How nicknames work in Thailand isn't the same as how ppl think about it in the west. I tried to write a comment explaining it all but it was a mess lol so instead here have a blog that explains it really well: ohmissannabella.com/thai-culture-thai-names/ It's really interesting and definitely worth reading!

Re: names in Thailand, Idk if it's the way all Thai names are but the one Thai person I know of has a VERY long name that tbh I don't know any Westerners, myself included, who can pronounce it, his full name is Chittaphon Leechaiyapornkul but he always goes by Ten, I don't think I've even heard anyone say his full name out loud and he's in a pretty famous Kpop group (NCT, specifically the Chinese subunit aka WayV), though I could have missed it as I'm not fluent in Korean or Chinese (the two main languages I've heard him speak and others speak to him in). I can see how someone with a name like that and a lazy demeanor might end up ignoring or "not noticing"/not reading the part about it needing to be their ID name and putting in their nickname instead, and how that would be frustrating to hotel workers. And then taking prevelance of nicknames into account and that excuse, someone shadier could try to cut and run by using their nickname and trying to get the front desk agent to not correct the info in the system.

@@MarkNarrations - I hope you are doing well. I think about you often, I know home life is rough and I’ve gone through similar situations (my grandfather when I was 14 & my grandmama was in was 27, they passed 13 years and two days apart). My extended family is no-longer because of fighting over their money and property and I was disowned. It took me almost 13 years to get back on talking terms with my mom and it took me yelling at her and going NC. It’s been a year since that happened, I have only seen her three times. I still have no intention of keeping a relationship with her after my father passes (he’s in his 70’s, she’s in her 60’s). But watching my grandpa slowly go from from the man who could do anything to the man who couldn’t even get out of bed, changed me. I’m lucky that when I think of him, I think of him sitting in his La-Z-Boy chair, drinking an iced tea in front of the tv, laughing. His beautiful blue eyes sparkling with life and smiling. I do remember his last day, I was the last person he saw before falling into a coma and passing the next morning (he wanted to pass on a Sunday and did). I had gone to see him to tell him I love him and that I will miss him. We shared some of our favorite stories, I hugged him and have him a kiss. He said he was gonna take a nap, it was his final nap. I woke up the next morning knowing he was gone. I was not told he was in a coma. I did not hear the call after midnight. There was no talk in the house about it. I woke up, rolled over and said to my cousin, “my grandpa died”. She knew, but denied it. She was waiting for my dad to come home and tell me. When my dad walked into my room an hour later, he said “I’m sorry” and I started screaming “No! No! You’re lying!” He just kept saying “I’m sorry”, tears running down his face. I was sobbing. He was cremated and because he had a twisted sense of humor, his memorial was a BBQ in February. My family no longer celebrate holidays, my grandparents both passed at the end of January. @nd the holidays were always at their house (grandpa was the cement that held us together, after he was gone grandma was the tape that TRIED). Sorry for the rant.

Thai birth names are usually very long so most Thai people in day to day things use their nicknames as they typically much shorter but for legal things like booking a hotel room with your bank account I can see why that would cause problems. I'm not Thai just love shows and media 😁
