Jackfruit (available at Superstore, President's Choice, only 25 calories for a full cup or 140g!) mixed with dill, lemon juice and seaweed makes a very convincing tuna substitute. Works very well for tuna salad too.

Yeah but there’s no satiation from it. It’s not a significant protein source so - in my opinion - it’s a poor substitute

When we veganized our tuna Casserole we used chopped artichokes for the tuna, we added mushrooms and spinach, and made a cream sauce with silken tofu. We used garlic and onion powder and dried italian herbs.

Hey Jeremy. I was screaming at the computer LOL LEMON !!! Acid gives a lot of flavor. I used to eat tuna casserole but not with mac'n cheese ! Oh, and for the record, your mushroom soup has WAY MORE mushrooms than that brand name soup !!! I would also add some kind of leafy green. And probably use tofu instead of soy curls. Good effort. Is there anything left to try to veganize ? I think I have seen everything under the sun already veganized ! We live in a wonderful world. Thanks for all you do to educate and entertain us!

I used to love tuna salad, but I never liked tuna casserole. My mom used to make tuna croquettes, but I wasn't a huge fan of cooked canned tuna. Somehow it gets fishier when heated. So, I would not make this. But it did look good, warm and creamy. Glad Woolie and Gail liked it!

Great video! There are religious sects that avoid onion and garlic for various reasons. And what is often used as a replacement is an Indian spice called "asafoetida" or "hing". It's very pungent and a little goes a long way. You may want to try it while Wollie can't have allium family vegetables.

@pbwithjeremy6 ай бұрын
Love these ideas!
@sharonknorr11066 ай бұрын
So, soy curls are tricky. I always rehydrate them first in hot/boiling water for 15-30 minutes, then squeeze out all the moisture (it will have a weird yellowish color - that is the soy) and then rehydrate again in whatever stock/marinade (the nori broth is great for that seafood flavor) which I also heat up to help it to get into the curls; then they sit for at least an hour, longer if I have time - I do get you are trying to make this quick and simple, but I think soy curls taste kind of bad if you don't do the two-step process, especially for those who are new to this way of eating. The rest seems fine, but your take on adding garlic and onions is spot on plus herbs - back in the day, most of these casseroles were kind of bland compared to what many of us expect today, so nostalgia is great, but bumping up the flavor is always a good idea. Some folks put shredded cheese (now vegan) on top with the bread crumbs/chips - I think someone already mentioned this - although my mom just used the cream of mushroom soup without any cheese in the recipe at all. You could also just add some frozen mixed vegetables for more nutrition. It's an easy recipe to customize and I haven't thought of doing something like this for a long while, so thanks for the inspiration.

This definitely needs onions and garlic, so I’m sorry you didn’t get to try it with the added flavors.

My family doesn’t like big chunks of soy curls, but if I shred them in a food processor they’ll eat them without complaining. Also, I would skip the cheese sauce part of this recipe. The mushroom soup looked amazing 🤩.

My Tvp is almost granular. If you shred the soaked soy curls in a food processor, the texture is much more like flaked tuna or shredded chicken. Both would work, just depends on the texture you like. 😊
