Agreed, I think wooden handles and leaving the top wood would have been super cool. The handles and top most likely aren’t the same wood so I think even having the top be wood would have looked super nice.

The lamp shade idea is EVERYTHING ! To complete the look 100% I would have rounded of the sharp corners on the base. I have been searching for a "mid century" lampshade, and this just might work for my project. Keep em comin !

That lampshade looked gorgeous. Love it! I also love the shape of the handles. I could imagine the cabinet being a dark olive green with like a dark wood stain color for the handles.
@Beaker357. Жыл бұрын
I would have tried a slightly darker green and stained the handles so they stood out and left the top wood so the handles and top would be wood with the green underneath
@mickb.8925 Жыл бұрын
Was thinking the same thing! I also would've made the 'fake' double drawer into one (with woodfiller just like she did with the legs), so you'd only have one slit which is off center.
@sofiasofia-em Жыл бұрын
yeah, also would've gotten rid of the fake drawer, as she left it, it looks like it belongs in a kids room.
@ambernicholson6307 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree with y’all. Just paint the drawer fronts and leave the rest wood. Filling in the faux drawer would’ve given it a really cool off centered look that I think would read very retro and utterly gorgeous. And since Becky didn’t seem to have a plan for that lamp sure seems like Justin could use it. Would be a vibe on that dresser.

Scroll saws are my favorite, and that's a cool first project on one! A couple tips: 1) Pluck the blade while tightening until it sounds nice and resonant, then stop. 2) Always push forward with both hands when cutting curves, people tend to overdo the difference between pushing each side of your material. 3) To get more reliable cuts, center yourself in front of the saw, look at the line of the blade and then imagine it continuing on to your drawn line. If they are lined up, your cut will follow where you want it.

For the lamp, when you have to make numerous shapes that should all be identical, it's best to use a router with a flush trim bit (considering you already had the template from the old cutting board too).

Girl, you made me nervous as Hades using the scroll saw. As an old hat at it, please keep your hands further from the blade. I am here to tell you, it can and will cut you to the bone, and 2) use a strong double sided tape when stack cutting. It will keep all the pieces together, and keep them from sliding like yours were. Other than that, you did a great job. The shade looks soooo good! Before ya know it, you'll be cutting intricate things too. Proud of ya!!@

When you first mentioned what you were going to do with the lamp It didn't seem appealing but when I saw the final product I was wowed by it, it's truly beautiful and stylish, almost sculptural. The dresser was a good makeover also. Even though I love olive green it didn't work for me on the dresser but I love what you did with the handles, again, it has a sculptural element. For anyone that's interested, the little screw on piece that secures the shade to the harp is called a finial.

@poorstu Жыл бұрын
Love it! I’ve always wondered how to go about creating a lamp shade and I really liked your approach. Since you invited comments regarding the scroll saw, I think the pieces you’re cutting may be a bit too thick; scroll saws work best for fine detail work with very thin stock. Band saws are a better choice for thicker stock, and you’ll get far less blade deflection than either a jig saw or a scroll saw. An alternate way to do the shade (assuming your plywood is at least 1/4” thick) would be to rough cut one piece with a jig saw, sand to the final desired shape, then use a template bit in the router to cut the remaining pieces (ideally after rough cutting with a jig saw or band saw). But your approach totally worked - loved the sanding together trick to increase consistency. Thank you for sharing it with the world!

These were amazing! I was rooting for that shade of olive, it was perfect. The lamp shade was chef's kiss perfect, but this is just me being way too picky but I would have put a sealant on the lamp shade so it would have been easier to clean. I live with an 120 pound Akita/Shepherd mix pound puppy and he sheds about 2 pounds of hair a day LOL so I have an obsession with having things that are easy to dust. That being said, these were truely beautuful!

For the scroll saw, blades make all the difference! The stock blades from Ryobi aren’t the best but if you switch them out for Modified Geometry Blades or Skip Reverse Tooth (pretty much any blades that are angled downward) will help to cut smoother for an easier time running the material through the machine and less tear out on your material😊

The dresser since you were painting it anyway you didn't need to keep that faux seperation in the big draws.. you could have filled the groove and made the handle on the big draws as one long handle.. and.. The lamps wooden base should have been cut to a circle to go better with all the circular elements of the rest of the design.. Just my thoughts..
