This is great! Gives a good perspective on what progressive Christians are about. Also, I’m a long time vegan, and this actually does happen in that world too 😂 I hear this one a lot, a lot “I’m vegan too! I just eat the occasional fish or eggs” or my favorite “I’m mostly vegan”….can you imagine?…”I’m mostly Christian”, it’s like saying, “but I’m a good person.”
@Missionmoench22 жыл бұрын
as a christian who eats a mostly plant based diet, I can certainly understand how it sounds like hypocrisy. I won't speak for other "pretend" vegans, but for myself I definitely don't consider myself vegan...but it's tough to concisely tell someone who asks me about my diet. I could say that I am a whole foods plant based pescatarian, who also doesn't eat any non-meat animal products except eggs on occasion because my epileptic son needs them and I don't want to cook a separate meal...but I usually just say I'm vegan because I know for sure I won't be served anything I wouldn't be okay with and it doesn't require a long winded explanation and list of what is and is not appropriate to me...
@lilimccarthy86642 жыл бұрын
@@Missionmoench2 I get it! In a moment to explain your diet to someone it’s easy to say vegan or mostly vegan, especially if you’re ordering at a restaurant and need to get the point across concisely. But, “officially”, the term “vegan”means a person refuses animals as commodity…that touches every aspect of a vegans life, far more than just what they eat. It is correct to say your diet is mostly plant based, or a new term I’m digging is “plant centered diet” But, “mostly vegan” contradicts itself, because the word “vegan” is definitive. However, language is a living thing, and as more people are choosing less animal products in their diet, the word “vegan” is taking on a new meaning, despite its misnomer. So, unless you’re talking to an animal rights activist, you’re probably fine 😂 Technically, and the point in the video “mostly Christian” can’t work, you’re either wholly Christian or you’re not Christian at all, likewise, you’re wholly vegan or you’re not vegan at all. It’s black and white with no room for something else. Does that make sense? Also, I hope this doesn’t come across as a “holier than thou” kindof vegan message, that’s not at all what I mean, just trying to clarify the difference between plant based diet and vegan, because they are so often intertwined, yet two very distinct things…at least through the lens of a “true” vegan 😝 oh also, I assume a person who eats a plant based diet is health conscience and eats quite well. I would not make that same assumption of a vegan….red vines, pringles, and Oreos are suitable for a vegan, technically, but probably not for a plant based diet ;)
@Missionmoench22 жыл бұрын
@@lilimccarthy8664 Makes sense for sure and in no way does it come across as holier than thou. The black and white concept makes sense to me. Being someone who believes that, while not exclusively the reason I choose to eat plant based, I choose to eat the way I do in large part due to wanting to treat animals with love and respect, I definitely admire you for choosing to be vegan, and I lean heavily in that direction (no leather, fur, etc.) though I am not Vegan. I suppose someone could say the same thing about Christianity, like, they love the things Jesus taught, and think it's really important to turn the other cheek, do good to those who persecute you, love one another, etc., but they are not sold on him as the Savior and the way in which we are granted access to the kingdom of God, therefore, they lean toward Christianity, but they are not Christian. I suppose in some regard its semantics, but it does make a difference.
@lilimccarthy86642 жыл бұрын
@@Missionmoench2 yes! That’s exactly right, and to my perspective, just what she was wanting to project in this video :) Btw, it feels good to look at dominion and stewardship of the animals in that way, doesn’t it? Gods creation, in all its many forms, it’s such a beautiful thing 💜
@lexaray52 жыл бұрын
@@lilimccarthy8664 Hey, friend. I just wanted to point out a couple of things. The first is that this is the definition of veganism from the vegan society and the one I hear quoted the most often: "Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose" You can see "seeks" "possible" and "practicable" are all qualifiers that suggest something other than a black and white way of thinking about veganism. Which brings me to the next thing I wanted to talk about - black and white thinking. Black and white thinking is almost always fallacious and short sighted. The world is massive and complex and people truly are different, live different lives, were brought up experiencing different situations, have different likes and interests... heck, even the way we *think* is different. (some people have a voice narrating their life 24/7, some people have only nonverbal thoughts, some people think by role playing conversations between two or more people in their head, etc) Black and white thinking disregards all of this and only considers two possibilities. Not only does this lead to factual inacurracy, it limits potential solutions. In regards to veganism specifically, it diminishes the fact that reducing your consumption of animal products in any way is a positive thing and is disregards the different level of obstacles people face in changing their diet like that. I don't know about you, but if I was looking at two people and one of them is wealthy, has a professional chef cook all their meals and goes vegan vs a poor single parent working 2+ jobs and uses the rest of their remaining money and energy to cut back on their animal product consumption by half, I feel that the second person is doing a lot more. And both of those people would fall under the vegan society's definition. ("As far as is possible and practicable") Not to mention what somebody else already pointed out, that second person might prefer vegan meals and so by telling people they are vegan they're asking for the types of food they would like to be provided. Anyways, I care because I'm a mathematician with OCD and was brought up as a southern baptist, so black and white thinking is the default I constantly have to challenge. Not only was it distorting my understanding of reality, it was harming my mental health. Here are some resources on black and white thinking, why it's considered a fallacy, and how it is harmful in the real world: -"What is 'Black and White Thinking'?" on Learn Religions -"How Black and White Thinking Hurts You (and What You Can Do to Change It)" on Healthline -"Cognitive Distortion: How Does Black-and-White Thinking Hurt Us?" on PsychCentral

A girl I know said she was vegan. Later she mentioned she ate bacon, and I was like "what?!" She said "oh I only eat it sometimes." I almost lost my mind. I said "look, eat whatever you want. But be honest with yourself and others. Say you eat very little meat, or you eat mostly plant-based except on weekends. But you cannot call yourself a Vegan and eat meat!! (anymore then you can deny sin or the fact that Jesus is the only way to eternal life and call yourself a Christian).

Basically the video exposes the idea that many people, with Christianity, like with this "progressive veganism" like to label themselves as "progressive Christians" when all of their ideals contradict with what actual Christianity is, and with what Scripture *actually* says. Likewise with this vegan, they claim to be a "progressive" vegan, when they don't even hold any of the ideals of an actual vegan. They eat meat, cheddar, cheese etc, and call "traditional" or *actual* veganism archaic. They want the label of "vegan" but they don't live it out, nor are they actually in the end vegans. @@angelsarah79 it’s satire using veganism, which is extremely black and white…vegans reject animal products as commodity, period. there’s no halfway, you either refuse animals for food and product (vegan) or you don’t (not vegan), a pick and choose vegan is a misnomer. She’s relating this to progressive Christian’s, who are an emergent group of people that pick and choose Scripture that is relevant to them and also will use Scripture out of context to fit their will, or will reject Scripture and make excuses as to why it’s not relevant or accurate. This, very often, depicts the all loving God as a liberal pushover Who bends to our will, so long as we are comfortable and satisfied with who we are…regardless of our thoughts, actions, and behaviors. It’s akin to a new age “we’re all divine” sort of philosophy. For obvious reasons, it’s an extremely dangerous understanding of Christianity. So, she chose veganism, because it is so clearly black and white definitive in its description, to underscore what progressive Christians are doing with their understanding of the Bible and Christ, which is also black and white definitive. Doing it to point out the mistaken doctrine of progressive Christians.

@@lilimccarthy8664 see, but with scripture, it’s just vague enough for people to interpret it in whichever way they want, this is why Christianity has broken off into different sects - 100 years ago the same religion didn’t want you showing your ankles, and were pro choice. Christianity today evolved from the Christianity of yesterday, and it’s going to keep evolving because you can’t say for certain what people actually meant when the book was written over 2000 years ago

@@BlapwardKrunkle I would say there is some room for interpretation but I think if you know the Bible there enough things clearly set in stone that saying ‘it’s so vague and means whatever you it to mean” isn’t really a valid argument. Actually, there's a huge overlap between vegans and atheists. In 2015, Pew found that 22.8% of Americans identified as religiously unaffiliated. In contrast to that, a 2015 study found that 72.5% of vegans were atheists or agnostic. Not only is that a dramatic difference compared to the general population, it's also a pretty overwhelming majority. That makes a lot of sense to me, personally, because I felt like I went through the same phases of critical thinking, deep diving into research, and slow departure from the dominant way of life I was used to living when I went vegan as I did when I left Christianity.

I had to laugh because my husband is deathly allergic to dairy, so sometimes I find vegan recipes and then add meat to it. Keep the comedy coming 🤣

Normal Christian teaching: be caring and help others in need, don't discriminate others. Extreme Christians: I'll pretend I didn't hear that.

What’s an “extreme Christian”? Christian teaching is about love and all of the virtues that accompany love, virtues like justice, prudence, obedience, honesty, etcetera. Listen, there’s a pastor I watch whose name is Mike Winger, you can find him on KZbin, he is loving and honest, but there’s also another pastor I know of called Steven Anderson, he’s widely viewed as a heretic for his overly pessimistic teaching regarding homosexuality. These two pastors *are not the same* . Not even close, but some people look at these two pastors both as “too judgy” and, ironically, judge them to be functionally identical. This is a generalization and it is unfair and immoral. That’s the thing, to be caring and to help others isn’t just about making people feel good, it’s about getting them to do what humans were meant to do and providing them with reality. Indeed, would you like it if you were happy your whole life, but only because someone was deliberately lying to you about everything in the world? No, because no one deserves to be lied to, it’s not loving to do that, and even if it may hurt to hear the truth, it should be heard for the sake of what is good.

You know in our walk with the Lord, we come across all types and I have found it was always best to focus on God and my understanding of him. So when I came across unkind christians I reminded myself that the reason I was there was to get feed the word of God and not to get involved with high school like clicks of people who may not even be christian but who fill up space in churches. Reading the Bible and asking God in prayer to please not let me be deceived before listing to a new online pastor. If I did watch a heretic paster the Holy Spirit would soon open my eyes. The point is God and not how we feel about those around us. Please focus on God not those who seek their own praise.

@Ivan Peixoto pretty sure there are no “kill your enemies, show no mercy” in the bible.

Love your satire. Amazingly how we change God's word and add things to it. Or "cherry pick " a sentence out of a chapter and turn it into something it's not. I'm not a vegan, I love meat!🙃😉
