Theres a tool from Lisle called pilot pins part # 13950, use them daily. Would be ok for summer tires but prob not so good for winters considering the corrosion. Could end up torquing the studs back every time the nut is removed. If the nut and stud don't become rust welded together

Yup. First mod I did on my Porsche Cayman. Especially good for tracking the car too because of the track well-set. I run the Tarrett Engineering studs, and I’ve been happy with them, but I do like the hex wrench fastener on yours-looks much easier to install. Also, if you track the car (and therefore change the pads a lot) put in caliper studs too 👍🏻

I was looking at studs for days online after breaking my back changing my tires in the garage in the middle of the night with freezing temperatures outside. I waited too long to change them because a tire shop used a torque wrench on my locks and stripped them all. Was trying to get them off without damaging my 19" wheel but ended up having to pay somebody to get them off and wheels got damage in the wells anyway....oh well. You instantly put me over that edge. I'll be putting them on when i swap back to summers. I'll even use your links ;-)

I have looked up SO MANY videos on Google, KZbin and various forums and your description alone about what you've done to your car so far summed up a lot of my inquiries and your video was a sponsored video on a differential flush! How have I never come across this just by searching the things I actually searched for??? I have a 2011 e90 xDrive so this will come in handy. You can strip a lug bolt the same way you can strip a stud or lug nut. To me, there is less of a chance for damage with the stud conversion kit because you just slide the wheels on and off. You don't have to worry about holding it on there, dropping it, etc.

Lug bolts are easy if you know how to. Keep the bolt in the holes. You wont lose them. When install pick up the wheel by the spokes with your thumb on the head of bolt. Look through the spokes and guid bolt to hole. In your 335 look for the hidden tool that bmw provides. Look in the battery cover. In the tray under the carpet there is a guide pin.

@pauld9542
@pauld9542 5 жыл бұрын
The reason BMW uses bolts vs studs is to prevent stripping the lug nuts, especially if an impact is used without a torque stick. You only need one 17mm all thread to hang the wheel and then line up the bolts and holes. Nuts provide maybe 10 threads of engagement whereas bolts probably 3x more.
@jake_spence
@jake_spence 5 жыл бұрын
I see where you're coming from, but I've never stripped a lug nut and the lug bolts have the same potential to strip. The lug bolts only thread in so far as seen on the short end of the stud. I don't imagine it's much more than a lug nut, but possible. Interesting points!

When i bought my BMW 320d 2001, there already was with 17.inch wheals and it looks great, no need for spacer, but after some time i tuck it away and sold it, and the reason is because when i get about three passengers sitting in the back the car is heavier and ties touch the chase and might start rust and get ugly, so that's why i tuck it away.

I am pretty sure we are not allowed to run any kind of spacer out here in Australia..........................also you can just buy yourself one on the studs and use it as a guide to install your wheels
@ianmarkhammes2071

If you track your car, then just go with a center nut. Otherwise, bolts are cheaper and have less unsprung mass than studs and nuts which will lead to quicker acceleration! All else aside, just use the alignment pin and spend your money on all the other crap that will break on your BMW.
@jake_spence
@jake_spence 4 жыл бұрын
Center nut would be cool for sure. But requires special wheels I believe. You're right on the other stuff!

I use burger racing spacers on my M3 and they include a single locator stud for initial centering of the wheel which is a cheaper alternative which can be used with standard wheels also.

I bought the same conversion kit for my 335. Within 2 months they began rusting out on me. The lugs and the ends of the studs. Look great at first but look terrible soon after.

Did u need to do any camber adjusting with the spacers or does it fit in the arch ok ?

No adjusting required unless you are really aggressive with the spacers, which I don't recommend.

Same thing here, I always wanted to have a garage like yours instead of using car jack and car stands. Especially on my 330i, since you can't use almost anything else except those rubber inserts and then trying to lift the car.

Oh wow...this was so informative.. I recently had my brakes done at a big name tyre shop (I live in Australia) and they damaged the drivers side hub trying to get out lug nut they put in previously... Are those conversion kits on ebay advertised as "for bmws" for around $160-180...suitable for all models...? I have a e82
@jake_spence
@jake_spence 5 жыл бұрын
I can't comment on the eBay kits, but I linked the one I used in the description and it definitely works on the E82, plus it's at that same price point!

Are your rotors flipped on the 135i? I thought the vanes need to go the other direction.
@jake_spence
@jake_spence 5 жыл бұрын
You just made me look way too far into this, lol. I recently did the brakes and these rotors are pointing in the opposite direction compared to my previous drilled/slotted. But I checked the stickers on each rotor and they are install on the correct corner. After reading up, apparently it's the internal cooling vanes that you can't see which need to be installed in the proper direction. The other slots can go either way.
