Importance of The Direwolves of House Stark | Game of Thrones

I always felt lady's death was foreshadowing the destruction of Sansa's innocence, or general happiness because of Joffrey. Summer's death seemed to symbolize the true beginning of winter, and also that Bran is now another person entirely. Sure he is still a Stark, but his character became the three eyed raven. Imo, Summer's death could show that he has officially become another person, and not just a Stark.

From the look of it, the Starks with direwolves are the active, the fighters, the dangerous ones. They win wars. Starks without direwolves... well, two choices: either they follow their direwolf in dying too or they fight but not in a physical sense - Sansa politics; Bran strategy. Both Sansa and Bran have been through a lot to simply die. Both are clearly fighters but on a different level. All four will have a key role in the wars to come.

Death of lady meant not the death of Sansa but her personality of a lady before she entered kings landing whereas death of summer meant the end of summer and the arrival of winter, its more complicated and symbolical than it seems to be

Ghost is an albino, which they have less pigmentation in their fur as well as eyes which is why his fur is white and his eyes are red. The eyes are red because those are the blood vessels behind his eyes. Blood, not color. Personally i think ghost is an albino because they are naturally shunned from groups of animals (crows will even kill white crows if they are born). This symbolizes jon being shunned as a bastard.

Great video! I love the direwolves! The direwolves and Dorne are the two biggest ways the show dropped the ball. (I MAY forgive them if they bring Nymeria back) Since the show has botched the significance of them I think we can only look at in the books. Sansa lied to Robert and Lady paid the price. Robb broke his word to the weasel Frey and Greywind is toast. Whenever a Stark (so far) forgot what being a Stark was the direwolf got it. Anywho...I'm loving Stark Week!

This was great. I don't think Summer and Shaggy Dog are doomed in the books. I think they were victims of CGI budget in the show. I am super excited though, this season for the hints that Nymeria and Arya will likely reunite. An assassin with a wolf pack at her back... Gives me chills.

Looking at the illustration, all the kids with red hair, their direwolves are dead. Bran and Sansa's wolves are dead, but Jon and Arya's are alive. I think it might be a foreshadow that both Bran and Sansa will die. As long as Nymeria and Ghost remain alive, but Jon and Arya will as well.

Haven't read the books, but believe the fates of the Starks are connected to their wolves. If they die, the respective Stark dies. That means, Bran and Sansa are on borrowed time. Sansa's always wanted to be a queen, just might be a colder version that she had intended!

Imagine this: we're at winterfell, Ned Stark and Catelyn Stark smiling at Robb and Talisa, Jon and Ygritte, Sansa and Theon, Arya and Gendry, Bran and Meera and Rickon and their first grand child. Grey wind, Ghost, Lady, Nymeria, Summer and Shaggydog are running around being playful, Uncle Benjen is laughing with Jory, Ser Roderick is proud, Osha and Hodor are being goofy, Maester Luwen is filled with happiness, Samwell and Gilly are there too, with their kids, Grenn and Pyp and Ed are laughing and Tormund is being crazy as always. Jojen and Howland Reed are there as well, chatting with each other. The hound is staring at Gendry and warning him to keep his distance from his adopted daughter, Arya, Arya has long forgiven him for mycah. The hound finally found his own family, his adopted daughter and he was burned by fire, now he's in the north because it's the coldest place in the seven kingdoms. Hot pie is going on about how he made his pie, Lommy doesn't give a shit. Brienne is attentive and ready to kill anyone who might be an enemy and Pod tells her to relax and let loose once in a while. Jamie is there because of Brienne, still feels like an outsider from time to time but he's been forgiven, Tyrion is as usual having a banter with Bronn because bromance. Ser Davos is happy but he misses his son and his adopted daughter, princess Shireen, and Lyanna Mormont comes running being chased by Shaggydog and Rickon stops Shaggydog and Lyanna tells him to teach him better manners and their love story starts when Rickon realizes that he's never seen a girl so ferocious and realizes that Shaggydog was chasing her because he liked her. The North is now not only a separate kingdom but the beyond the wall, the wildlings and the northmen live in peace. Catelyn now knows about Jon's parents and hates that she ever treated him that way. Yara is there too, and seeing her little brother happy makes her very happy although she doesn't love the north and the snow too much. Yara rules the iron islands along with Theon, Sansa goes on to become a lady of a place that she least wanted be in the beginning and Theon and Robb and all her family tease her for it, Talisa continues her work of helping the people and is often with Maester Luwen studying more, Sam and Talisa have many conversations about such topics. Everyone makes fun of Arya for becoming a lady of Storm's end because she never wanted to be a lady but she goes on redefine the word, Gendry rules and Arya still likes to travel and Sandor often accompanies her and so do lommy and hotpie at times. Meera and Bran were meant to be and Howland couldn't be happier about it. Jojen and Bran are also best friends, warning together, having an adventure. Lyanna makes it clear that she's going to be a Mormont always and if Rickon wants to be with her, that's how it's gonna be, Rickon laughs and says Stark, Mormont, Bear, Wolf, idk, we're meant to be together. Jon and Ygritte keep going on adventures and Catelyn is now overprotective of Jon but Ned reminds him, that he has pack with him and he's not a Stark but also a dragon, so she doesn't need to worry, Tormund, Jon, Ygritte, Ed, Grenn, Pyp, and Sam and gilly have many, many adventures together, sometimes the Tarlys stay back to help Talisa. They're all one big happy family, all the Starks have their own packs but they're all one big pack led by Ned Stark and CatelynStarks. Tyrion gets Casterly Rock because Jamie insists, he says that he's gonna stay with Brienne, now and forever. Tyrion rules the west, Bronn is his commander, and Jamie is his hand, Jamie and Brienne keep traveling back and forth as do the others. Varys is Tyrions masters of whispers. Tyrion along with Jamie rules the West, North is ruled by the Starks, the iron islands are ruled by the Greyjoy siblings, Danaerys rules the king's landing but she doesn't go crazy, she stays sane and does exactly what she had promised, frees the people from tyrants, westeros once again becomes a force to be reckoned with, only this time, kings and queens are not just powerful but kind, just and actually care about their people. All of them are one united force. The dothraki are now people of the king's landings. The Lannisters no longer scheme and plot but they're still smart and clever and take care of the kingdoms with their wits, specially Tyrion and Varys, the iron born, stronger than ever but also become much better people, the North ofc, great as always, the south, great under Danaerys Targareyan. And lastly, Drogon, Rhaegal and Viscerion all live. And one more thing, Iron islands gets it's first ladylike lady, symbolizing that being a lady is sansa's strength, she might not be a swordswoman like her sister but she has her strengths and being a fighter isn't just about being able to be to kill people in battle, Bran and Summer's story signifies that Summer is here and here to stay, Grey wind and Robb's story signifies that courage to fight for your own, to protect your own and standing for what you believe in is what makes a king, Shaggydog and Rickon's story signifies that embracing your wild side can turn out to be the best thing, him and Osha being best friends and osha protecting him like her own family along with Shaggydog even though she was supposed to be Wilding enemy, Nymeria and Arya's story shows us that ladies aren't suppose to fit in one box as does Sansa and lady, ladies can be as fierce, as bold but still kind and gentle and ghost and and Jon's story shows us that we or others might hide our true identity to protect us but the greatness that we possess will not stay hidden which is for the best, Ghost looks different but is the quietest and so is Jon but they both save so many lives because they were great.

But also a bastard's sigil is the inverted colors of the House. So since Stark colors are black wolves on a white banner, Jon's colors as a bastard are a white wolf on a black background. Ghost may be white in deference to the Targaryen hair, but it's also symbolic of his position in House Stark.

Every time Sansa betrays a member of the Stark family for selfish reasons, she suffers some type of punishment, the first of which is the death of Lady. When she betrays Arya by not telling the truth about what happened with Joffrey, Lady is executed and Sansa symbolically is separated from what makes the Stark family unique. Next Sansa betrays her father by telling Cersei about Ned's plan to flee by ship back to Winterfell with his daughters(books only?) and her father is beheaded. For this betrayal she is repeatedly beaten and abused by Joffrey and his minions. Next, she betrays her cousin Robyn when she lies about his mother's death and leaves young and vulnerable Robyn and all the people of the Vale as puppets of Little Finger. For this she is given to Ramsey and suffers much. Finally, she lies to and betrays Jon through omission about the Vale forces because all she cared about was getting her revenge even if it cost Jon his life. Perhaps her punishment for this is the North completely ignoring her as a potential queen and electing Jon the King of the North.. Finally, Sansa's attitude toward Rickon before, during and after the Battle of the Bastards reflects her attitude about what is more important: her family or herself. First, she uses Rickon as a tool to manipulate Jon into fighting her battles for her, then she tries to convince Jon not to attempt to save Rickon because it is hopeless (of course when she was in Ramsey's clutches, she didn't see being saved as impossible and expected Theon to risk his life to help her) and finally, when her baby brother's dead body is brought into the courtyard as she stood there with Jon, not even a quiet solitary tear is shed by her cold selfish eyes. Her only thoughts were for Ramsey and her revenge. So Lady's death reflects Sansa no longer being a true Stark and but a Stark in name only.

Isn't it intriguing that a number of different people can witness the same thing, yet each one comes away with a different perception. I wonder why that is? Personal experiences? Beliefs? The brain is an amazing and mysterious gift we share. I really like your catch on Sansa's punishments when she betrays selfishly, very nice. :) My thoughts: When Lady and Sansa first bonded, Sansa was an innocent, obeying child dreaming that one day she might become a respected, honorable and obeying Lady like her mother in a high noble house. On the arrival of Joffrey, Sansa's subsequent engagement, and her trip south to the Capitol with the Lannisters; these events lead to the beginning of the end of the innocent girl she was; to become a fierce, just and powerful leader. The old life she had was represented in Lady. Lady's death was ordered by a Lion - how appropriate that the lion was the first to crush her innocence, and begin her journey of change. I am hopeful that when Sansa's transition is complete, she will bond with a new pet :) - One that matches who she has become. Summer was the same sort of concept with Bran: Summer died when Bran's adventurous, loving, sensitive, innocent journey as a boy officially and suddenly transitions to a young man with great responsibility as the Three-Eyed Raven. Perhaps he learns to 'warg' all beings, no matter how powerful they are? Maybe just living beings? Who knows :) He is going to be a big player in the big war to come. My theory regarding Nymeria: Arya and her separate from each other to transition from child/pup to woman/bitch independently. When they have completed their transitions, they will reunite to empower each other for the war ahead. I'm curious to know what happens to a bonded pet after their warg has died?

The Targaryens have blonde almost white hair. I am not sure how Jon has jet black hair, but since Jon cant have that trait as he may be in danger, it's interesting that his wolf, Ghost, is all white.

Wendy Grant That's true, but he's also a Stark. That explains the dark hair. The Targaryens are heavily inbred which explains why they all have white hair. Plus how far would this story have gone if Jon's hair was white? Robert Baratheon would've had him killed on sight. His dark hair saved his life and plotline.

🐺🐺🐺Martin said all the Stark children are wargs. The significance of the direwolves is that they're the gateway to their psychic abilities. Martin's sci-fi background alludes to psychic ability being triggered by trauma. Childhood trauma is what triggers dissociation. Bran was lead to the tower to fall by Bloodraven to open his 3rd eye ultimately and become who he needed to. When a warg or a direwolf dies they can have a 2nd life within the other. When Lady died I believe she lived on in Sansa. Sansa as an 11 year old girl with fairy tale dreams was experiencing a long drawn out trauma as the prisoner of her enemies- enemies she tried to care for. If you notice Sansa displays psychic ability subversively. When the Hound- who hates everyone save for her and later Arya- goes to rescue her from her chambers Sansa later remembers a kiss that never happened after she sings him a calming song. Martin has said "that will come to mean something later on". I believe she read his mind and since she's unaware of this ability and she's a child essentially she remembers it differently- as a traumatized child dissociating would do. Both Stark girls are later even made to adopt new identities further pushing that idea. In Sansa's last chapter she looks north and hears a wolf cry like a ghost. Another chapter her fantasy and inner thoughts of Janos Slynt's death is fulfilled precisely by Jon at the wall later. She sings to the ladies and children during the attack on Kings Landing calming them while Cersei is in a stupor. When you read closely you see these details and that's what makes Martin's writing so epic! In the show also one of the white walker sigils was the circle with line through- balance- and when Sansa comes into her own at the Vale she makes a new costume for herself with that same symbol and a needle attached and a feathery dress- giving me Phoenix vibes.

So why did Sansa make so many bad decisions? Why did she not see the cruelty and enmity of Joffrey and Cersei much earlier? Why did she betray Ned in the books and partially cause his death (GRRM admits this)? Why hasn't she even figured out that Littlefinger framed Tyrion AND her with Joffrey's death? Why is she still so bloody naive?And show Sansa reluctantly agreed to marry Ramsay. If she's psychic, it's for two minutes a day. Even a stopped clock is right two times a day.

Spiritual Gangster I agree with the fact that Sansa was a child and unable grasp the deceits and power struggles around her, hence her rather long maturation process. Additionally, Arya is described as always feeling slightly out of place, and struggling with her interests and what is expected of her. Sansa, by contrast, was "fortunate" in having the interests and abilities of a high born lady. She could easily do what was expected of her. This worked to her great disadvantage as her world became violent and fell apart. Arya had an advantage here, as she was used to pursuing her own interests and fighting against the current. In the books you can see that despite her tremendous survival skills, Arya occasionally has moments of still being a little girl who wants a family. But of course she is forced to subdued those thoughts in order to survive. From this perspective, Sansa is way behind the learning curve, because she clings to her high born skills for defense even as she realizes that that world isn't real.

Thank you, Gray, for your channel and especially this series. IA Time for Wolves is about to come so it's good timing. This is a terrific exploration of the Direwolf-Stark kid bond. As you reveal, that scene is of utmost importance. It is VERY CLEAR that each kid was **meant** to have this rare creature as a living symbol of who/what they are. And they were supposed to take care of them. All but Sansa did. Sansa led lady on a leash, tied to a stake, vulnerable to...death. The others let their wolves run free, and Grey Wind died when Robb stupidly let the Freys kennel him. When Sansa sided with Joffrey against Arya both by the river and afterwards in the scene with Robert, Lady's fate was SYMBOLICALLY sealed. Maybe Sansa's too. Arya not only looked after Nymeria, but saved her life by chasing her off. at great sacrifice. And despite Sansa letting her look like a liar to the KING, Arya also tried to save Lady's life. When they realized Cersei was going to have lady killed, Arya yelled to Cersei, "Lady wasn't there! You leave her alone!" And then she stared daggers (pun intended) at Cersei. Nobody did more for direwolves than Arya. No wonder she could warg Nymeria from Braavos. And Nymeria retrieved her mom's body. And now book Nymeria is leading a wolf pack taking out Freys, as is Lady Stoneheart. If the wolves really are important, so is Arya. She is the Starkiest of the Starks. I think this often overlooked little girl, with a mind of steel and a heart of gold, is meant for great things.

For what it's worth, here is my two cents : the direwolves still alive simply symbolizes that their owner are "fully stark" : even though they tried to leave the "winterfell package" behind, their Stark blood tied them too strongly to it. Bran is now more tied to his identity as the three-eyed raven, and Sansa is trying to "exist" in the political world, her Stark blood being more a mean to an end for her, I think.

Thank you for my long awaited vid! I have always thought that the wolves played a big part with the children. Take Lady and Sansa, she lost her wolf right away and look what a ruff time she had since, Same with Robb, they died together, Rickon too. With the 2 remaining along with their owners, Jon and Arya, may be protected more, or in my world at least stay alive! Great job with the vids, keep 'em coming :-))

I think that Ramsay raping Sansa may have her ending up conceiving a child and "death by her own blood" could be childbirth. True, Ramsay was horrible and I'm more than happy to have his character gone for good and in such a gorey way, but Game of Thrones isn't shy of causing horrible pain to genuinely good people. I don't WANT that to happen, but I can SEE it happening. I have been waiting for Sansa to die since Lady was killed and, though her character has grown far more likable than when the series started out, I think her end will be coming.

Technically speaking, Bran Stark died in that cave where Summer died. It was Three-Eyed Raven Bran that emerged. So you could say that their fate was shared after all, and the link between the wolves' fates and the Stark children holds true.

Well said. Sadly, I think you're correct about the foreshadowing as George is fond of it. The thing that never really made sense though, until this moment, was why Lady died first but Sansa didn't. I think this is yet another sad foreshadow, in that, Lady died in place of Nymeria. I think ultimately, Sansa will sacrifice herself to save Arya. Bittersweet in that, while we'll be so proud of Sansa for finally showing that Stark backbone, it'll be her final song.

Bran's direwolf Summer died in 6th season and in finale episode the citadel officially announced that summer is over and winter has come. I think it was a foreshadowing for Bran, other surviving Starks and all mankind to prepare for the long winter.
