Some knowledge and advice on OIL! Do NOT use 5W30 BMW LL04! Do NOT trust your BMW Dealer on this one! The LL04 they use is designed for Diesel-Engines but also fits the requirements for Petrol-Engines. The BMW LL01 is designed for Petrol-Engines only and fits it requirements better. They just use LL04 because they can have ONE barrel for "all" the cars! The N13B16 has oil temps between 105-135°C. The zylinders and walls are even hotter than this! A 5W30 oil will just burn and it leftovers will accumulate in the wiper rings. The oil turns completely black really fast after an oil change (like 3000 km or something). Go check this out!. Also the car will consume oil; mine took 1 liter on 5000 km. That is pretty much for a young engine. BMW will say this is "normal" ... ye sure thing ... The mentiont 0,7 L/1000 km is ridicules and should be considered as an engine failure. On 35.000 km total, I was sick of it and switched to 0W40 LL01. This oil is perfect in any regard.. No more tar like oil. Even after 20.000 km it is only a bit brownish and traslucent! The consumption was cut in half with 1 liter on 10.000 km. Amazing! I change it every 17.000-20.000 km. Dont go for the full 30.000 km or trust the computer estimates on this one! Mine tells me that after 20.000 km driven, that an oil change is required in 25.000 km. Ye sure, 45.000 km interval. The turbo will LOVE this. And mine is chipped to 310 NM and 220hp ... for like 80.000 km now and a total about 110000 km. Engine problems so far: NONE!!!🤪

I also got this engine in my F21. I absolutely do not get why BMW recommends 5w30 oil. Changed mine to 5w40 which is a must for this car imo. Even considering going for a 5w 50 for the summer unless i manage to install a oilcooler. Oil consumption is about 0,65l after 6000km, which is fine I guess. Due to the high oil temps I will perform oil change every 10.000km. No matter which oil viscosity you run, the oil additives start to break apart once the oil goes beyond 120°. In other words, the oil wears down faster, hence Im going to change it every 10k.

Thank you for an excellent video👍🏻 My BMW F20 116i from December 2011 I had a couple of issues. 1. Water pump replacement as the old one had some crack and was leaking. 2. Issues with the Vanos, my car very often was going to an emergency mode and there was no full power so I had to buy a second hand one. 3. The steering wheel wasn’t reversing quick enough, the mechanic had to adjust some screw in the steering wheel column.

Once again great vid Matt... As far as I know, the block is PSA, but everything else was designed by BMW. The Peugeot 207cc has the same block, some Mini's do... But on the 116i, the Garrett turbo, and everything else is purely designed in Germany (do note: DESIGNED! Cause my steering rack is Made in China!! Radio is made in China etc). My 116i is an automatic and has about 11000 km and it isnt the most quiet engine. When you start is up, I also have that rattling noise at the wastegate. I know all about the VW clip that would solve it, but really not messing about for those 30 seconds of noise when your engine is cold. My car is quite lazy when I accelerate from +/- 1500 rpm to 2000, then it just goes! In Belgium its officially 0w30 oil they put in. I do dislike the fact they didnt implement a temp gauge in the display! One never really knows if the car is on the right temperature. Like I mentioned earlier, the steering rack is not great quality, and alot of cars made between certain dates were called back to repair the rack, preventively or after complaint. Also the AC compressor has its moods. Sometimes mine will slighty 'shake" when I'm idling with AC on, sometimes it wont… Seems like my car is female and it has it's moodswings now and again. Having said all of this, I do like driving it, although the overall finish is quite cheapish… I am not a fast driver, and maybe as you mentioned, I should put the pedal to the metal now and again to clean out the injectors.... Anyways, would be great to hear fellow 116i drivers their experiences! Cheers all!

Such a good comment, thank you. Wow, I can't believe how low your km are, I thought mine was low for a 2012 116i auto. Its amazing how much of our cars components are made in China. I wonder if this will all change soon. I am not to bothered about the waste gate issue now, I am glad its not really a mechanical issue. I find the lack of the temp gauge very frustrating, ALL my previous BMW's (from the 80-00's had one). In the F20 I have to do the secret menu mode, to see the temp. I did make a video somewhere. I will have to make a video with other F20 drivers experiences. Cheers for your valuable input.

For those watching. In my experience with my 2014 N13 116i I have only ever had one major engine issue and it was simply replacing a spark plug + ignition coil on cylinder 1 which died at a normal time. Absolutely no other issues. I have the wastegate rattle on a cold start, but it doesn't bother me at all. I purchased at about 25k miles and have got it to 48k miles now running 95 octane the whole time (I'm in the UK), services as the car has asked and putting in any brand of 5w30 whenever I've needed to top up. I haven't even done an oil change regularly, just when the car has requested a service. Brilliant engine in my opinion. I plan on tuning to stage 1, stage 2 and hopefully slap some forged bits + turbo on and get it stage 3 one day. Love putting my foot down and if you launch it from first it's something else, get's stuck at 5k+ revs through every gear and just flies like it's a VTEC Honda :').

Hi, a lot of people have problems with the PCV system. Broken PCV lines cause vacuum leaks which lead to a lean condition, which causes rough idle or even stalling. Also for PCV, there are PCV valve membranes inside the valve cover. The only way to fix it correctly seems to be installing a new valve cover. I personally experience shaky and hesitant acceleration and shifts (manual). I discovered that there is oil around the lower PCV line that connects to the air intake tube in front of the turbocharger. Also I could hear air escaping when pressurizing the intake with a glove and a bicycle pump. I will replace it and tell you if it improved the situation.
@naliinsuthakaran29673 жыл бұрын
did it solve the issue?
@floriansaurwein18953 жыл бұрын
@@naliinsuthakaran2967 well, there actually was a leak in the PCV line I replaced it. Also beware that the hose that connects the turbo to the intake / MAF sensor WILL break when you try to pull it out as the material is of very poor quality. I would say that I don't know if this improved smoothness, because I did a few other things: Replace spark plugs and ignition coils, especially the ignition coils fail early and cause misfires before that, put good gas and injection cleaner to clean the fuel injectors. The biggest thing that caused shakyness was the dual mass flywheel (DMF) It was worn down and allowed a lot of play, which reduced smoothness a lot (My car only has 120k km) I replaced it with a used one from a car that had 40k km and now the ride is as smooth as never before. I even have a "light" stage 1 tune which gives me about 170-180hp. You might also want to reset the DME adjustments.
@floriansaurwein18953 жыл бұрын
@@naliinsuthakaran2967 My mechanic told me, that this engine is electronically supervised and controlled by the ECU / DME very well, so anything dramatic will likely cause a check engine light and anything that is not problematic won't. Of course in my case, it technically wasn't a problem, but the shakyness bothered me. In the end I had to pull the transmission, replace the DMF and hope that it would improve the situation which luckily, it did.

GREAT video! However it's a pity that you didn't provide the details about your engine. In example, how much your takes oil, how much petrol per 100km and so on... Some info about mine N13 from 118i 2013 170hp: Normal benzin consumption: 7,5L (on highway less, in city more up to 8,5L) Oil consumption: 1L/~12tsd km. The more agressive driving the more it consumes. I use SHELL Helix, HX7 Motoröl 5W-40 changing every 10 tsd km and I am really happy with this oil. My engine has some vibrations but you cannot really feel it when driving, it also has this metal noise in the first 30s after start. I had some minor issue with ignition coil which broke - you can easily replace it by yourself at cheap cost. I also had issue with the leaking cooling fluid. Unfortunately it was really costy, circa 330€ (germany prices) despite if was only a leak... For this car I think it's really important to change the oil on time and not to tank any shit petrol like E10... also do not give it full gas when the engine is cold, turbo does not like it

@@mattsbeamer I forgot to mention coil packs. I changed one just yesterday and changed one a couple years ago. I also did a drain and fill on the zf transmission at 100000kms. I have an annoying oil leak that I suspect is coming from one of the chain guide bolts. If it turns out to be that I’ll updated the comments.

Hamid - and you still on original Timing Chain?. I have been getting the "Drive Train" message and my mechanic says its time to change the timing chain. The car is on 160,000km - about 120,000km he replaced the Timing tensioner. Does this model suffer same issues as the N20 engines?

@@ManUtd_Rules early versions of the n13 have been known to have issues with the timing chain “stretching” and the guides breaking. I’m now at 170k kms and on original chain. Normally drivetrain error is the result of one of the wheel speed sensors going bad or one of the ignition coils going bad. I’ve changed 3 of them to date and have a spare just in case the other one goes.

So complete and accurate information, thanks for the video. My car has the n13 170hp motor. It is a really reliable motor (to be a bmw). The biggest problem, as you mention is the cooling system... Water pumps used at all f models are really bad, mine failed at 40 thousand kms. Aside of that, really rock solid motor if you take care of it. Regards matt :)

Just got a 116i 2014 , 113k miles got a bad burning smell in cockpit while driving. went through 2 litre of oil in 3 weeks of owning it ,engine overheated ,drivetrain warning ,reduced power ,bought from a dealership tbey gave me the car with one year mot and the handbreak doesn't work , still under 30 day warranty

That is shocking (especially from a dealer) , what did you do with the car in the end?

Hi Gents, i have a 2014 118i and have had a rough type idle for some time. The bmw dealership cannot tell me what the issue is after injector replacement, full major service, coil packs, charge pipe replacement etc. What happens is that when i drove for a while, stop, switch the engine off, then when i start again there is almost a hestitation or jerking in the engine, almost like a misfire but with a struggle to breathe... Can anyone please advise? I will appreciate your input

@@mattsbeamer I'd appreciate this too. I believe it's required to be able to get to stage 3 (although there isn't a stage 3 one I've ever seen... yet ;)) The N13 in a 118i has an oil cooler stock whereas 116i and below don't but apparently it takes changing quite a bit to retrofit one, struggling to find any information regarding fitting one of these to a 116i or 114i.

if anyone knows what causes drivetrain error? on the F20 118i 2011. how does one resolve this issue if it keeps coming back even after taking the car in for repairs?

The automatic gearbox is safe ?
@mattsbeamer Жыл бұрын
To the best of my knowledge it is a great gearbox, in my opinion, it’s best to service the gearbox, even though BMW says the gearboxes are sealed and the oil is for life. No oil is for life. They use this gearbox in many cars. I did do a brief video on it. Cheers for the comment :)
