How do you know what size wire to use to run to the speakers?
@WildMidwest16 ай бұрын
It depends on the amperage to your speakers. If you are wiring normal door speakers (< 100 watts @ 4 ohms) and short wire runs you can usually get away with 16-18 gauge. Larger wattages or longer runs demand bigger wire. For subwoofers consult your amp and driver specs. Realize these numbers are only starting points. It makes a difference what quality wire you using. With tinned 100% premium OFC you can get away with narrower diameter. Using cheap CCA wire you need to go fatter. Mark has great videos on all of this subject but the info is spread out, not all in one place. He is conservative in choosing top-of-the-line wire at diameters exceeding the maximum amperage. As a famous pro installer I get it. He cannot make assumptions about usage and he never wants a customer returning with a blown fuse or fried wire. Most of us enthusiasts on a budget are willing to make compromises based on our listening preferences. There’s a big difference between a bass-head and a typical low-volume Classical music listener in the currents we’re likely to demand. Helpful?

Do you need a better head unit to have better quality and louder sound for your subwoofer and amp?? I have a stock head unit currently
@soggyfries43476 жыл бұрын
An aftermarket head unit can provide a significant improvement in the quality of sound from your other audio components. The number of cases where a factory unit outperforms an aftermarket unit is very small. Provided you don't get some cheap brand. A solid aftermarket unit will give better audio adjustment functions, more options for inputs, and other aspects that make it a worth wild investment. IMO, a quality head unit is your foundation for quality audio. If you already invested a good amount of money in subs and amps it would only make sense to complete the investment with a decent head unit. But I understand that some people do want to maintain that factory look, nothing wrong with that either.

I just got my shipment from KNU today and I wanted to give people a heads up. I ordered 12ga. speaker wire for the doors and rear, and 8ga. for my subs. It's close to 4 ga. wire in size and I have an '03 Taurus that has the stupid hard plastic cylinder for a boot. Mark, you owned a Taurus, what size speaker wire did you use for the doors and how did you get it through? Thanks Mark, and for everyone else, the wire looks and feels solid as hell and has a very L-A-R-G-E diameter.

i recently had an amp installed and shortly there after i noticed a cloud of smoke inside my car. the smoke smells bad, like burned goat shit, and makes you want to puke. the smoke is coming from my car stereo, not the amp. the installers tried to blame my LED bulbs but i told them the lights only turn on when i open the door and thats for a few seconds at a time. i replaced the bulbs with OE bulbs and the smell of burning wires is still there. what is causing something to obviously overheat?

You need to take into account the length of wire and how much current the wire will need to transfer. There are many charts that you use to compare the two values to then determine size.

@CAF I was wondering if you’ve ever thought of making your own battery (with the lithium kits being sold online now days) I’ve seen many applications including upgrading battery power for those kids mobiles to make them go faster or have better power exchange do you think this is possible for extra power packs for amps and other stuff you may need in larger builds? This is all hypothetical and simply to satiate my own curiosity if anyone reads this and knows about electrical systems in a way that can be explained to someone with not electrical background I’d appreciate the info and input :D

@patrickc15084 жыл бұрын
fatalfriend I am just a hobbiest. He has videos on calculating the appropriate wire and fuse sizes. My own estimate (assuming 1k rms not max) without running the numbers, knowing your amplifier efficiency, or length of wire is roughly at least 4ga OFC with a 125A fuse. Speaker wire.... for your subwoofers, use the largest that you can get and fits. 10ga should be gtg, but 8 is better, 12 if you can’t get or fit larger.

A thought on the power wires you showed in those kits... In any conductor, excess positive or negative charge accumulates at and distributes itself across the surface of the conductor so that charge density is nearly uniform. This is because like charges are repellant (and unlike charges tend to pair off and neutralize). So the point being, in any sort of conductive object, positive or negative charge will travel along the outer surface. This includes electrons traveling (i.e. "current"). In simpler terms, current travels on the outside surface of your wires. Where I'm going with this, is that if you have a tinned wire...the resistance of that wire is largely going to be determined by the plating. So oxygen free copper, versus regular copper, whatever... the resistivity is predominantly dictated by the plating on the wire. I haven't looked up the resistivity of different metals to say concretely, but I would hazard a guess that your best value is to not worry that much about what sort of copper it is, and just buy the absolute fattest wire you can reasonably afford (provided that girth is metal, not insulation). Only once I was down to zero gauge wire would I worry about alloy at all, and even then, only if I was some sort of SPL competitor trying to wring every last dB out of my amps. Your ROI of money and attention is bigger elsewhere IMO. Theory is one thing, but actually getting to see you apply knowledge to create these systems is really great. Thank you for sharing your considerable fabrication skills and knowledge with all of us. I am learning a lot about installation methods, materials and best practices from your videos. Ian

@patrickc15084 жыл бұрын
c0uchsl0uch00 I would definitely do a big 3 upgrade with 0 gauge. Running 0 gauge to the amplifier won’t do much good when you’re trying to run that much current through the small factory wires. Your electrical system is only as strong as its weakest link. You’re probably (almost definitely) going to need an alternator also.

@Krazie-Ivan6 жыл бұрын
my guess is; might need the system to be a bit more well-rounded and flat in response, cause what you've described sounds like classic "peaky" issues where the Db's at certain frequencies are vastly different. is the sub in a sealed box within the factory recommended volume spec, or in a prefab that is either too small, or a bandpass/ported that isn't tuned near the sub's TS parameters?
@Olemann44446 жыл бұрын
Krazie its a ported box so i should try to play more whit the amplifier tuning?
@Krazie-Ivan6 жыл бұрын
i'm willing to bet it's the ported box giving you unbalanced response. so you might look-up the sub specs & find a sealed box with the right net volume... 1.5-2.2cuft is normally a good place to start with the avg 12" sub. place it rear-firing toward the back bumper, in the driver's side of the trunk. then turn down your amp gain & set the low-pass to about 50-60Hz. i listen to everything from Led Zep, to Lupe Fiasco, Bjork, TOOL, The Roots, NIN, ATCQ, Prince ...sealed boxes, and maybe a t-line to add rumble are all i'd ever suggest. ported & bandpass sound like poo.
@Olemann44446 жыл бұрын
Thank you alot im looking to upgrade the sound system so you prefer sealed box i want to build a custom box but whit no expirence in sound system i have no idea whats good and what to keep away from can you send me a link to 2 12” subs and amplifer that match good maybe a box or i can try building my own box.
