@PakBallandSami similar to the US. The combination of laisez faire capitalism and representative democracy seems ripe for corruption. This could be addressed through work place democracy, but that would require defeating corporate power. That said, democracies are corrupt when they stop serving the people, but at least they are designed to serve the people. An autocracy will never be corrupt, because it isn't designed to serve the people in the first place. It's designed to control the people in service to the dictator.

@@PakBallandSami Not that I think telling them this will help at all, but realistically speaking the less democratic a society is, the more corrupt it will be since there are less guardrails on power and less accountability to the public. Pakistan is currently a flawed democracy, military plays a big role in politics. The solution to corruption is more democracy, not less.

@@PakBallandSami I don’t think an Iran type system will ever come about in Pakistan, because the military is a much more powerful political bloc than religious fundamentalists and clergy. The Pakistani military and ISI have massive influence over the politics of Pakistan. If democracy is so unstable and easily threatened, they will seize power as they have in the past. Not to say that the Pakistani military does not have some fundamentalist sentiments, but the PAF by and large have ruled as militaristic autocrats rather than theocratic islamists. I too hope that neither of these things ever happen, but the military has so much power in the Pakistani state, and instability seems to be on an ever upward trend.

So I didn't realise how complicated this was until heard him trying to make sense of it basically: PDM is not a party, it was a coalition of the 2nd and 3rd largest parties to form government, plm-n and pppp, they both don't like eachother very much so are both separately vying for power, and are historical the most successful parties, since their Shebaz Sharif the head pml-n became PM However in Pakistan elections are supervised by an appointed caretaker government for 90 days( five months this time around...), who is currently "incharge" Shebaz Sharif is not running for PM again because his more popular older brother Nawaz Sharif is back from exile and cleared of charges weeks before the election( and months after when the constitution states it should be held...) He has declared himself victor as yesterday as his party has the most seats in Parliament, but he quite a few less then the independent identified with PTI, no one has a clear majority

Pretty sure you will not read this, but here it goes: 1) Military DID have a high approval rating (considered less corrupt compared to every politician ever), however, last two years, they have lost the mandate completely. Public opinion has shifted so far against the army as it's being seen as the most corrupt fascist entity in Pakistan due to the events that unfolded (of which there are too many to list) in just the last year alone 2) Khan is NOT a despot. He has been the ONLY non-corrupt politician in power that Pakistan has had for decades. Pakistan has very poor internal structures in place for government systems due to rampant corruption and systematically eradicating or reducing corruption will takes decades (so ingrained in the society at every level). However, many people try and point fingers at Khan's government for being inept because it couldn't curb the corruption (as though it's something that can be done by turning a switch on). 3) Khan is the most popular leader in all of Pakistan with over 60% approval rating (this is superrrrr high) 4) Khan was in power during the COVID crisis and handled it with finnesse while decreasing the national debt, increasing tourism and investments, increasing awareness for climate change while simultaneously starting initiatives such as the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami (planting ten billion trees across Pakistan in strategic areas to reduce the effects of desertification and pollution), Khan started a pseudo universal healthcare for less income families, opened countless shelter homes for poor and homeless individuals just to name a few things he did in his short time in office 5) The Sharif and Zardari families are so corrupt, their examples are given in textbooks around the world (even in documentaries and leaks pertaining to offshore money laundering), mush less the respect (read total disgust and hate) they receive from Pakistanis. The Army keeps propping up one of these buffoons to be figureheads while keeping their fascist control of the country 6) This current election was so badly rigged that it's laughable and has disheartened millions of Pakistanis 7) Pakistan has been undergoing brain-drain for the last two years in record numbers as every educated individual is running out of the country due to the lack of future prospects in a country so steeped in corruption with no law and order, no democracy and no self-respect. He who has the biggest stick is the king of the jungle in the circus that is now what is left of a country called Pakistan.

About Khan its a huge lack of information here. American media keeps saying Imran Khan is like the former guy(I refuse to use his name, he is like Lord Voldemort) and media like CNN keep saying he is far-right. You probably know he is the most left wing Pakistan can probably get at this point. PPP under Z.A. Bhutto was leftist and MQM. I am originally from Karachi so I have some sympathy for at lest Mustafa Kamal but not Altaf Bahi. BTW, nice to see another Pakistani who watches Vaush, I only started watching years after moving to the US.

@MaryyamFatima
@MaryyamFatima 5 ай бұрын
@@testest12344 it was popular up until the whole regime change with Khan. They have done many coups before, but the lack of social media and their control of the legacy media (tv and newspapers) made the public unaware and always painted the army in a positive light. However, this last coup in 2022 caused a lot of mobilization and awareness in the Pakistani diaspora (millions of Pakistanis live overseas), so seeing on ground realities as well as having a bigger scope from viewpoints of Pakistanis in other countries, it allowed the overall public to finally see the control the army has on every institution in Pakistan. Plus, many beloved journalists critical of the army and former prime ministers were murdered/jailed and so many others had to flee Pakistan . However, due to social media they were still allowed to continue spreading their message which the army could not control like legacy media. This is why I said there are so many things in just the last two years alone, and I'm only touching the surface.

Although Imran Khan is in jail, a lot of his party loyalists have already secured seats as independents. Albeit comprising of center-right populist, there is a clear mandate. A lot of the common folk do see him as the PK premier. His actual governance is altogether different matter. His government passed multiple laws giving unprecedented powers to the establishment. Multiple authors and journalists have written about this. Leftists in PK do not affiliate themselves with PTI because he is believed to have used the very same kingmaker systems that he stands against today. (As an individual, a lot of people really do believe him to be honest, but his party leadership is comprised of a lot of turncoats...)

I don't read into "all will be forgiven" as a threat, maybe a suggestion of future sanctions vs potential funding. Maybe it was a mafioso like threat I wasn't there, but I don't really see any issue with the feds using access to the financial system to progress foreign policy, as long as it isn't progressing towards corruption. Plus the feds actually using authority over the banking and greater financial industry is generally a good precedent that should be expanded.

No, both sides are not bad. One side is clearly a fascist state army and the other side is a non corrupt leader who has the highest approval rating any politician has had in decades (over 60%). Also, Khan is not a despot or anything similar to Trump (stupid, with only two brain cells). He started so many initiatives, including universal healthcare and a billion trees tsunami (plating billions of trees across Pakistan) as well as handling covid amazingly well for a country mired in national debt (which he reduced btw). So no, Khan is not the lesser of the two evils. It's like saying Bernia and Trump are both same same but different. False equivalency.
