Oh goodness... If I dont have cabbage weekly I couldn't function in life! Love love it! I suffer from stage 4 kidney disease, and cabbage with the addition of red bell peppers, really helps with detoxifying the kidneys. It's definitely a super food!

I can’t wait to try the cabbage skillet recipe, thanks! I’m diabetic so I have to count carbs. One of my favorite snacks is cold, out of the fridge, cabbage core! Really crunchy, great flavor. Super good for bulk, too. We used to get it as a treat when we were kids and mom would be using fresh cabbage.

I love cooking with cabbage! Cooked cabbage works pretty well for managing my diabetes, plus it's the only way my stomach can tolerate it, with Crohn's Disease. I cook up a big bunch in my slow cooker with garlic, salt, pepper and just a little bit of chicken broth, then divide it up in individual containers to have as a side dish throughout the week. Thank you, Mel, for sharing these ideas! I'm always looking for more.

I learned a better way to cut the core out of the cabbage. Half the cabbage head and then quarter it. Lay the quarters on their side and then you can cut the quarter core out while the quarter cabbage is laying flat on your cutting board. Much less chance of the knife slipping while cutting the core out. The quarter cabbage head is easier to slice too.

I live in Pulaski Tennesee and a couple years ago we went to the Amish community in Ethridge to buy garden veggies ...while there I saw a cabbage ...it was bigger than a basketball ....no joke ....so needless to say it came home with me ...we made multiple meals with that delicious cabbage

Thanks Mel, I come from the south ( Tennessee) although I don’t live there but…wish I did. My Mom made different cabbage dishes and would occasionally each summer can it. I now make homemade Coleslaw, and just plain cooked cabbage with onions and bacon with seasoning for a meal with our other foods. Funny..you should mention the not cooking, I didn’t when my husband and I were first married. Thank goodness I cook now, but..now my health at our age ( 71) I just am not able to cook like I use too. It’s a shame really. I like and miss at times having a balanced meal..

I have just cut up a cabbage and put it in the insta pot. Came in here and sat down to wait and here you are, cooking cabbage. LOL. I absolutely love cabbage. I was lazy today and am just using the insta pot, but my favorite way to fix it is fried. YUM! All you need is some cornbread, and you have a great meal. This casserole is a must try. I have everything here to make it for supper. I assume if I add the rice that I need to cook it first. I don't think it will work if I don't. I know it will be good! Nice thing about cabbages is that it is versatile. Have it raw in a coleslaw/salad. Stir-fry in a "eggroll in a bowl" recipe. Steamed/baked with stuffing of choice (cabbage rolls/wraps). Or, just plainly boiled like how my mother does it, getting us a nice sweet veggie broth to go with white rice.

I find it easier to quarter my cabbage then cut core out, if I dont need the big leaves. ❤ [If you want a great treat, brush your cabbage steaks with saved bacon grease, then grill with your protien... (leave core in until cooked).My uncle would top with cheese (like a cheese burger when cabbage was cooked enough. ]
