@AbaNPreach

Facial features are actually different once you look at enough of them or are around them. Koreans have paler skin (on average), oval faces, double eyelids is fairly common as well as thicker eyebrows and high nose bridges. Skin care seems to be a big deal there so koreans tend to have softer smoother features. Japanese folks tend to have lower nose bridges, small lips and smaller noses. Also tend to be darker. As far as haircuts go for men, Koreans are far more limited (due to history I believe) where as Japanese men will have more variety. This might sound like nonsense but if you ever spoke to someone who lived in those countries, they can generally tell if youre from china or japan/Korea vice versa. But this is my anecdotal experience. Same can be said for Africa.

A few years ago in Toronto, there was a writer/activist named Desmond Cole trying to make the same argument. He said during an interview how offensive and wrong it was when people asked him where he or his family was from originally - implying there was a sinister and racist reason for doing so. Another person in the interview simply asked “But don’t you think some people are just interested in that aspect of others? And if they are showing interest, doesn’t that suggest they have at least a favorable regard toward immigrants?” The fact that people may truly be interested in where Cole and his family came from was never even considered by him - he immediately took it as an insult.

Storytime, I was stationed in Korea as a U.S. Soldier. I had some Koreans Soldiers in my squad, and this topic came up about telling the difference among the Asian population. I asked one of them how they tell the difference, and he said the way they style their hair. I laughed, and he said that Asians can tell the difference. Fast forward, my family and I are waiting in the immigration line returning from Japan. A Korean lady came up to us and told me we were in the wrong line because this line is for Korean citizens while pointing at all the "Korean" around me. I'm a half Japanese, half (white) American. I was at the airport a few years ago, which U.S. city I can't remember, when a man (probably in his sixties) approached me. He clearly worked for the airport, helping people with luggage, and asked if he could assist me. I told him "no, thank you" and he asked me where I was from. I get this a lot, and have come to realize that they don't necessarily want to know what state I'm from. So I responded, I'm from Washington but my mom's Japanese and my dad is American. I'm not sure if he didn't hear me, but he responded "you speak such good English". I don't have an accent. I smiled and went about my day. The girl in the video's inability to understand and empathize with a man, whose culture, language and upbringing clearly differs from her own shows that she is the ignorant one in this situation. She stinks of immaturity and entitlement. If you're being sincere, don't be afraid to ask questions to get to know someone - it'll help weed out the crazies. P.S. I love you guys.

Not knowing that I have sickle cell. @@Death-999 hi! Maybe I can clear up your question just a little. It wasn't the statement that he made that was slightly ignorant it was what he was assuming and implying. The gentlemen at the airport assumed he was born and raised in a different country because his appearance showed he was Asian. But what the airport worker didn't even think of is that he is half Asian and half White. He also didn't think of the fact that this gentleman was born in American. So of course he wouldn't have an Asian accent because he's never lived in an Asian Country. The airport worker didn't hear the guy explain that he was born and raised in American, even though he is half Japanese. Then assumed he was from another country so he thought he was complimenting the guy by telling him "his English was really good!" If he was genuinely from another country that would be a compliment. Lol, it's just small assumptions on the airport guys side and not listening to him in the first place that could be "seen" as rude by some. But like this wonderful gentleman realized is that it just was a misunderstanding on the airport guy's side but he didn't say what he said to deliberately hurt him. Soooo he took it in real stride, like a genuinely good person. He didn't take it personally.... because I'm guessing it's happened before.... And after lol. Anyone who has lived only in their own little world... just doesn't understand. But every interaction has greatly to do with each individual themselves. I hope that helps, much love to you!!!😊

@@heybea891 But like OP said he asked where he's from and he even said the guy must have not heard him correctly, he must have heard "Japanese" and thought he was from Japan, which makes the comment that he has good english not racist. He noticed that she was Asian but not exactly similar to his Chinese girl friend and thus was curious about where she was from. There is no way he was trying to offend her or be racist. He was actually trying to learn and become more educated and less ignorant. She felt unsafe in his car? WOW... I also love how she does the typical thing and says "It is offensive to US" She proceeded to speak on behalf of everyone of her race. I guarantee many of her race and culture would never be close to offended by what he said. This happens a lot with people that are easily offended. they are so self absorbed they feel everyone is or should be like them.

The harsh truth is that people like this make real racism into this trivial issue by turning everything into “racism, hatred, bigotry, etc” regardless of the person’s intent. Like you said, there’s a difference between racism and ignorance. I might say something that is ignorant, but that does not make me racist. Racism is active discrimination against someone based purely on ethnicity/skin color, which is not what this man did. She says she understands it's a language barrier... but she still wants to get out of the car and says how uncomfortable she is. She has to leave because she has a meeting. "I have a meeting I have to change taxis"... but she wastes like what, 10 minutes? And she REFUSES to let the guy continue? She's a wannabe. She doesn't have a meeting, she isn't in a hurry. She's not dressed for a meeting either. She didn't want to pay for the taxi so she decided to make drama and post it on the internet for brownie points. She was probably bullied so she got a kick out of bullying someone who couldn't speak the language and was afraid of her. She's scraping the bottom, and wants people around her to think she's some hot shot, so she's lashing out at the less fortunate. She finally felt like she had power in this situation, and wanted to make herself into some businesswoman in a thrift shop jeans jacket that has to leave her current taxi and find a new one BECAUSE she has a meeting she needs to get to. @@UltraGalacticSuperFantastic "similar features and skin tones" They're still not the same because of how genetics works. For example black people and Chinese have a trait for flat noses, however they're still not the same gene. Same goes for skin, some people tan better than others simply due to having better genes. The middle east has a massive variance of tones and not all abide by the Woke presumption thatbtheyre all "brown" whatever that means. Same goes for sweat glands, fast twitch muscles and various other heritable traits. Only just recently did they discover which protein strains determine skin color. Yes, there absolutely are differences between people's but this is not a judgment on their character. Although if you have large sweat glands you might want to shower more.

Or my favotire "The driver made me fall by hitting the gas as i was walking" you shouldn't walk until the bus is at the bus stop, not my freaking fault you decided to stand up and walk towards the door while I'm at a traffic light and hit the gas when the light jumps on green but your dumb ass is walking down the stairs at that moment of time...O and for the record, the no walking policy is in the code of conduct that you can find on the website when you enter a bus. People always have the need to film those who have a public service and post it online. We had a coworker who got filmed for being on his phone in the bus. He nearly got fired cause there is a zero tolerance of using the phone behind the wheel (as it's against the law here), however he was at a bus stop and had to wait several minutes, so he had his door open, the engine off and waiting his time, so he looked at his phone as many of us do. That passenger tried to get his life destroyed for that, cause that passenger didn't like that the driver was on his phone at a busstop. He had to drag it to court to not lose his job FFS...all cause of a passenger who filmed him on the phone....even though that passenger wasn't even allowed to film him and the company still using that as proof against him. THe judge was very clear "this is illegal acquired evidence and ontop of that, it clearly shows the bus was not moving, combined with the statement of the drive plus footage from the onboard camera's that the bus was standing still, the driver did not commit any illegal actions". Fuck this day and age and everyone trying to get others to lose their jobs and film everything. People make mistakes, move on with your goddamn life gjees.

My mother and father immigrated to the U.S. Both were middle class, but they felt that the U.S. would offer more opportunity for their future children, so they were willing to risk their own comfort and convenience to benefit their children. About a year after coming here, I was born. Unfortunately, my mother passed away when I was a toddler. My father lost the love of his life, but he poured all his kindness and attention into me. I couldn't have asked for a more loving and supportive father. He did everything for me, and to this day, it makes me start to cry when I think about what he went through. One of the things that especially comes to mind is one of my first memories during preschool. I remember my father walking me up the stairs to the classroom. When the classroom door opened, we could see all the kids inside dressed up in various costumes. I was the only child who did not have a costume. I didn't really understand what was going on, but my father was horrified. The teacher walked over, and my father asked her to step into the hall to speak. I remember looking around the corner into the hall, and I could see my father wiping his eyes. He was so ashamed and embarrassed both for me and his inability to read well. The teacher had sent a note home about the Halloween party the week before, but he didn't really understand the note. My father's English wasn't great, and he wasn't very literate. He asked the teacher to tell him if there was any news in the future, and he apologized to me before he left. After this, he started studying English, and he would practice reading books so that he could read me stories before bed. I have nothing but empathy for immigrants. We often forget that these people are usually selected to move to our countries, usually representing a functional, if not highly-functioning member of the society they left to join ours. I have worked with people who are technically brilliant, making well into the six figures, who still don't feel comfortable with ordering off of a menu because of the cursive script used on the menu. They are curious and have questions, and we should extend a little grace to these people who are trying to learn the working rules of our society without the threat of getting them fired because they don't know the rules of the game here.

Lol.) and the impact it had on you, and probably will forever have on you. Knowing that your failure that affected someone else's life, esp your kids' life, is stuff a lot of people carry with them forever. Knowing that you see it as a turning point that absolutely improved both of your lives, and likely brought ya'll closer together with all the time spent on bedtime stories, is something any parent would love to hear. Omg Aba !!! So glad you touched this subject. I traveled in Poland and lived in a small town where there were little to nothing black people. I was like the second black person in town they have said so many things that Americans would consider RACIST! But honestly some people are genuinely unaware of the whole world, and lack exposure and they dont need to dress you up when they are interact with you because it is part of their cultural differences. She wouldn’t be able to survive in Africa nor in some suburban areas in Europe. The whole world is not as sensitive as the US. Although there are some Traumatic experiences like what Preach was saying not everyone is here to attack or belittle you. Some are just genuinely curious. Also you can just tell how sincere his apology was.Poor things for both sides!

True empathy is being aware of other’s circumstances before acting out of emotion, to her this is a minor inconvenience and she’s willing to blow up this man’s entire life to prove a point, that’s the state of society in privileged areas where this behavior is common.

It's not racist. He didn't do anything discriminatory. Yes, you feel slighted because someone doesn't know enough about you or your culture. That's EVERYONE! I gre up in Detroit. I'm white. The other black kids thought my sister and I were twins and we don't look nothing alike. If you're raised in areas that don't have exposure to other people's culture that's is a natural phenomena to think "they all look alike." When I lived in Egypt I mentioned I can see the family resemblance to my husband's family meeting them for the first time. And they were offended a bit because they thought I was referring to all Arabs look a like. That may not be true to your perspective. It's not racism it's just ignorance. Stop being so offended. You can not realistically expect people to know everything about your culture or background.

@10kzs you're right. She was just trying to assert her dominance and feel superior. Racism is a direct attempt to prevent someone from having the same rights, liberty, and pursuit of happiness through acts of violence towards those of a different race. Being offended by someone's well-intended comment isn't racism, and does a terrible disservice to those who are actually suffering abuses from those who are racists.

White as the driven snow, living in a town that has a "joke but also not really" nickname that points out it's pretty much just white folks living here: I discovered that various other white people that I saw and frequently interacted with in passing on a semi-regular basis, week to week - in the context of a retail job - thought my brother and I were the same person, after he dyed his hair, and I started getting comments like "I like your hair much better this way" or "why did you stop dying your hair?" while manning the register. We're not twins, and he had something like 100 pounds on me back then, you'd never mistake us for the same person standing side by side; people just really don't pay all that much attention in general.

I'm Indian and just moved to northwest Colorado. Every checkout counter, Mexican restaurant, etc. I get native Spanish speakers talking to me in their own language immediately. This happens every day. Given the demographics of this area, it's totally understandable. Most of the time I respond in English, and they start speaking English and it's no big deal. Would I ever refuse service for such a small annoyance? Never. The entitlement these days is crazy.

Lol I’m Hispanic and speak Spanish but I was born in America and English is my primary language and my Spanish is not as good. They do this to me at work and it’s one of the most annoying cultural things that Hispanic people do. It’s not that I hate Spanish or my own people, I just hate the entitlement these Latinos feel when they think anyone with brown skin or ethnic features must speak Spanish or is Hispanic. I also don’t feel confident speaking it to people outside my family. Not every Hispanic person has to be able or willing to speak Spanish to them. Many Hispanic people born in America have chosen to assimilate and speak English and eventually no longer speak Spanish or hold onto old country cultural norms. I speak Spanish and hold onto it because it feels right and have pride in my ability to speak two languages and I choose to retain it for my own purposes and personal cultural pride, not to appease entitled hispanic people who are too lazy to learn English or conform to non-mutual feelings of cultural nepotism recent Hispanic immigrants think I must comply with.

@@beambooi6431it’s not really entitlement. Everyone wants to speak the language they’re most comfortable with. If they can’t, then someone has to compromise. You can’t tell latinos apart. I’m Colombian and I can’t tell you if someone is from Venezuela or Colombia or Chile or Ecuador. So when latinos in multicultural countries see someone who looks non-white, they see an opportunity to speak in the way they’re most comfortable with. If it back-fires and they say no hablo español, then no problem they switch if they can. Its not that they’re holding on to old culture, it’s literally they’re current culture to speak Spanish.

All of these are understandable. Humans haven't evolved to be blue, purple, green yet, so some people are going to look similar. Also, how racist is it to assume people are "pureblood" and should be strictly categorized, and how ignorant to ignore hundreds of years of cross-colonization? So, so, incredibly dumb.

I read an unconfirmed rumor in the comments of another video reaction to the same topic, that the driver is Kurdish. If that's true, he arrived in the UK seeking assylum from ethnic cleansing in northern Iraq and Turkey. Calling ethnic cleansing racism is a bit of an understatement. Having a meltdown because a cab driver asks where you're from is laughable. Additionally, this isn't the first time the TikTok'er in question has had drama with an Uber driver and then posted a video about it. If "itsgnochgnoch" is as posh as her accent would have us believe, perhaps a good therapist can help her cultivate a modicum of empathy and self-awareness.

I completely agree with y'all. Being a brown woman, i was so worried about australians being racists when i first moved to Australia. Until i realized i didnt know jack shit about autralian history. There were times when i thought i was being funny or curious but ended up being racist. The minute someone pointed it out to me,i would sincerely apologise and make sure i never repeat it. I was lucky enough to find considerate and kind people around me who understood my barriers. One of my closest friend from Sydney is asian but she is born and raised in Australia and prefers to be reffered as an australian as she never even travelled to her parent's country. I unknowingly with my naive mentality her "ohhh so what kind of asian are you?" And she told me "i am australian." She wasnt upset with me but rather explained to me her side of the story of how she identifies as an australian as she has absolutely no connection with her parent's country or roots.

I'm betting if you put a Scandinavian and a Slavic side-by side, she'd think they look the same or an Albanian and a Turk etc etc. Every race and country has a unique feature pattern, but if you're not exposed to it often or don't catalog those special ethnic features, of course you're not going to be able to tell. The man is an Immigrant with English clearly not being his first language. He literally said the quiet part out-loud most people aren't willing to admit aloud or even to themselves.

"Where are you from?" Is one of those conversation starters which has, sadly, been weaponized to make those asking an innocent question feel guilty. When people ask me where I'm from, they're not inquiring about a silly suburb NW of Chicago. My name is different. That's an invitation to share about my family's origin. I, for example, love talking to people who are from places I've visited because it's nice to talk about those places and to learn about their experiences of places I've seen.
