Great test! I was shocked the braid failed so quickly. I have seen several comments about the diameter not being fair. I do a lot of bass fishing as well and I use 50lb braid and then tie on a 5ft leader of 12lb floro. I have converted all my baitcasters to this set up. I would like to see 50lb braid vs 12lb mono or floro. I know it’s difficult to keep everyone happy. Thank you for making these videos! I will be sharing this with some friends!

Some people said the test should use the same diameter lines. Well, we chose our line strength based on what is your target fish, so based on diameter is NOT in the real world of fishing. I have many times break off 100-150 lb braid lines on the pier, boat bottom, sand bars, reefs, large fish scales, whipping shark tails and rough skin. But it took 50 lb mono forever to break by abrasion. That is why all the big game set up have at least 200 yards of same strength mono top shot, experience told us.

I wouldn't be surprised if you're right, if 20lb mono is still more abrasion resistant than 100lb power pro, but it would still be interesting to see that confirmed in a controlled experiment like this.

50 lbs braid diameter equal to 20 lbs mono. However thank you very much for entertaining such experiments, i learned whole a lot about lines from your 3 videos i watched vs. years of my fishing experience. In my world Sunline & Yo-zuri hybrid was the best line ever and veraity of Braid lines. I started fishing in 1986 and a fellow senior fishermen started me with Trilene lines, as time went buy every time i lost a fish concerning line or leader, always shopped for different line, so once again thank you very much for you time experiment and sharing, going back and staying with Trilene Big Game.

Mono has already been proven to be more abrasion resistant than even the best quality fluoro lines, via INDEPENDENT testing. NOTE HOW ALL CLAIMS STATING "FLUORO IS MORE ABRASION RESISTANT THAN MONO" ONLY COMES FROM THE FLUORO MANUFACTURERS THEMSELVES.........or people simply repeating the false information provided by the fluoro manufacturers. Most of the fishing guides/charters today who put clients on giant blue fin tuna, are still using mono, just like most of the trophy bass fishing guides here in Florida. I jumped all over the fluoro bandwagon years ago. I used it exclusively for 4 yrs straight. But I eventually started realizing I was breaking off far too often, from setting the hook on small bass.........even while making aggressive long distance casts........and I always made sure to tie fresh knots frequently. I got so fed up, I switched back to mono, and the vast majority of my line breakage issues vanished. Of course for spinning gear, braid is the way to go. It casts so much further than mono.
@InshoreChaos6 жыл бұрын
I agree with the other comments. Braid has a much thinner diameter. Braid is always much more difficult to cut than mono. I remember you watched the video from when I went to Tampa and fished with you, the 26" snook that took me under the dock and around the pilings was on 10 lb braid, and the line held up well for the rest of the day. I think there are way more factors that play into this because I'm still confident braid would hold up over mono if a fish were to take you around a nasty piling.

I fish braid because of the diameter vs strength. I fish 50 lb braid that is a 15 lb diameter. I would love to see the test with diameter vs diameter. If it goes the same way, I might be changing my line.

Great video evidence. I was on a great bass bite fishing rock piles last spring. Losing every fish too big for me to immediately control with braid. Used only 15 pound floroclear and caught a 5 pound catfish way down in this rock pile. All I could do was keep pressure while the cat gradually rolled up the rocks. It took several minutes to get clear of the rock and land him. the line was very scuffed up but still strong and fishable. With braid, even with a long leader, it would have been about a 3 second deal until that disintegration as shown in this video. I still use braid sometimes , however when using mono , as far as concern for hook sets go, all you have to do is use a slightly lighter hook, copolymer with slightly heavier # test, or a slightly faster action rod, or some combination.

Went fishing twice a week during my work years.......now retired and go 4 times a week. Braids main advantage is its use on light spinning reels for casting and line management, however even though it is hard to cut and seems tuff when cutting the tag end off a knot.....it actually is not very resistant to abrasion. Where I fish we have Chain Pickerel. Sharp teeth!!! So you have your favorite floating rapala tied on and fishing for Bass and a Pickerel hits......there goes your floating rapala. Amazing how fast braided line will fail in real world conditions against any fish with sharp teeth and or sharp gill plates. So along came Florocarbon, all the pros hyped it up, yep the new wonder line and it is just a bad as braid and even with supreme care tying a knot it still is weak at the knot , sharp teeth and or a concrete piling will cause both braid and floro to fail so fast it is amazing. There you are holding an empty limp line and saying.......Wow that was fast!!! There went my new 8 dollar spinnerbait. So it was back to mono for this fisherman. Mono will get nicked, and messed up but does seem to hold up, so you just cut off 4 feet of line and re-tie. And you will still have your new 8 dollar spinner bait, it was not donated to a Pickerel. Cheers Kit

Re watched this video and decided to do some quick math to post on another comment for shits and giggles since everyone is butthurt that he didn't use the same diameter. Decided to post it here as well. idk still think the big game would have beat it (100 lb braid). That stuff is very abrasion resistant and braid, by nature of its design is going to be easier for abrasion to wear on the individual fibers. For reference, the 20 lb big game is listed at .018", the 20 lb power pro is .008", and the 100 lb power pro is .018". That means that the area of the cross section is .00005 for the .008" stuff and .00025 for the .018". That means that the 100lb power pro has approximately 5x the material than the 20 lb braid (which makes sense given it is 5x the weight). You are still looking at a 25+ to 1 advantage to the mono though. It wouldn't be unreasonable to expect the 100 lb power pro to give way somewhere around 5 repetitions, which means that the braid is about 5x less abrasion resistant for a given diameter. Even if it took 10, that's still less than half as abrasion resistant as super cheap big game.

@@Saltstrong Yep, glad to do so and thanks for the reply. Hopefully the "on paper" numbers are accurate for real world testing. I'd be very interested to see if a heavier braid would follow that same rate for abrasion (or mono as well). It is possible that the heavier braid would do better than the smaller braid because the individual strands are themselves larger and more abrasion resistance or some other unseen factor like that. It's also possible that you would see a similar gain with mono when going larger, or a similar loss if dropping to a lighter line.

I mean, most people only use braid for top water where you need a no stretch line. Not to mention is pound for pound braid a lot smaller in diameter than mono. So course with having less material to go through you would get this result. So with a pound for pound line test it should really be pulling strength.

What I've always wanted to know was how braid would do against mono when you equate the diameter instead of the pound test rating, like if you compared 30lb power pro or j braid to 8lb mono, or 100lb braid vs 20lb mono. I know this would drastically reduce casting distance but still, I'd really love to know.

Reels are rated for higher ib rates when using braided line. For example a 130ib class reel rated for 1000 yards 130ib mono is also rated for 250ib/1955yd it allows for more line and higher ib rates. Traditionally reels are not spooled with the same IB rates when switching from mono to braid. Your test is extremely effective but your braid ib choice is not equivalent to real world application. The type of game targeted does play a role but most people choose braid for the extra yds and the easy casting ability.

For bass fisherman 20 lb braid is used for finesse fishing and 20lb Mono or Flouro is used for power techniques such as flipping/pitching. I get it’s the same pound breaking strength but it’s not a fair comparison in my opinion. There’s no bass angler I know of that would use 20 lb braid to fish boat docks with unless they were skipping wacky worms or dropshotting and they’d used a flouro leader for those applications almost 99% of the time. 20lb braid is the same diameter as 6lb mono and 20lb mono is the same as 65lb braid.

Testing braid and mono is deceiving because the diameters are so different. Small diameter line will certainly abrade faster than a line many times larger. However, it depends on the hardness of the materials being used to attain abrasion. Weeds and other materials are softer and braid cuts thru them like a sharp knife does lettuce. If I use 6-pound braid with a smaller diameter for fishing Steel Head, it will land many more large fish than 2-pound mono that is slightly larger in diameter. If either line comes in contact of a harder surface the mono will part faster than the braid, I assure you of that fact. The smallest of fish can cut line if it encounters sharp objects. You do not need any special cutting tool to cut mono but you do need something made to cut braided line.

I use size 4000 reels so 200 yard of 10 or 12 pound mono or 200 yards of 20 to 30 pound braid. So how does 12 pound mono compare to 30 pounds braid for abrasion. I really like the sensitivity of the 30 pound braid and it casts a bit farther but will the similar diameter braid be much less durable than mono?
@Saltstrong5 жыл бұрын
If you're targeting fish that can be caught with 12 lb mono, then I'd recommend going with 10 to 15 lb braid because it casts so much better than 12 lb mono and 30 lb braid. Braided line has in a way revolutionised fishing IMO. A whole industry has been built around it. Reels are being made super expensive and super strong, along with rods to cope with braid I see videos of guys catching huge fish on braid, the rod bent to the handle, basically bringing the fish in with the line only. May as well be using rope. The rod and reel is only a tool to facilitate wrenching a fish in on high breaking strain braid. It's not sport at all. Case in point, say a guy is using 50lb braid for stripers, the equivalent mono setup is a 50lb game rod with a huge conventional reel. If a guy was winching them in on that people would say hardly sporting, why is it any different for a guy to winch them in on a rod that bends to the butt using 50lb braid?The fish is up against the strength of the line not the skill of the angler. It sucks that fishing has gone that way.

line should be submerged for a real test water could act as a lubricant or something different salt vs freshwater. and flouro should be included

No surprise. It's definitely diameter-specific. I'd be more curious about nanofil V braid. And maybe ~0.04in braid V mono.

I'd like to see the same test but using the same diameter lines, not weight.

Allright one thing that's obvious is one line is way thicker than the other braid is a lot thinner than the mono

You should use 8 strand braid in the same test

Your line is in one spot for the pillon test. In reality it's going to several feet that a fish will pull around a pillon or rock but I think the results should be close to the same.

I do notice my braid gets frayed more than my flouro or mono. But as far as this particular test I think the lines need to be same diameter. Bc 20 lbs test braid is like 2-4 lb line daliameter so really the 20 lbs mono should do better. I think 80-100lb braid (17-20 lb mono diameter ) would fair better....
@Saltstrong6 жыл бұрын
I agree that the results would get closer as the diameters get closer. But I can't think of a situation where an angler would be deciding between a 20 lb mono and a 100 lb braid for any given species.

bought it retail? not online for the braid (china copy)

Yes, I got it at Bass Pro Shops.

Had to dislike. 20 lb braid is equivalent diameter to 6-8 lb mono. Do a test where braid is the same DIAMETER as the mono.
@Saltstrong6 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that the target species of fish that an angler would use a 20 lb braid for is much different than the target species of us 6 lb mono. Can you help me understand when those two options would be an either-or choice?

It’s quite common to drop shot for small mouth bass with 15-20lb braid connected to a 6-8LB Mono or fluorocarbon leader. When I m flippin grass mats or brush for large mouth bass, I will use 50-65lb braid or 20-25lb monofilament or fluorocarbon. I tend to stick to braid because I believe it is stronger. As you probably know there’s guys that like the mono and fluorocarbon because they believe it’s more abrasion resistance.

Here in my place people use at least 0.23 - 0.30mm braid with 0.23mm - 0.40mm leader for invisibility. Target species is Snakehead, Barramundi, Papuan Black Bass etc. Most of it with Baitcast reel. 0.23mm leader for barra is okay but for snakehead? Say good bye to your lure. The line will snap that's why people use straight 0.23mm braid or 0.40mm leader. for it

DISAGREE The purpose of this test is to highlight real world fishing situations. When fishing you choose the BREAKING STRAIN most suited to your needs/application not the diameter of line. Therefore BREAKING STRAIN of line should be kept constant for braid and mono in this application. Another example... if you normally fish 20lb mono - then you're NEVER going to try and match the line diameter of the mono with braid to end up with 60lb braid or whatever. That is ridiculous, half the reason people use braid, aside from bite detection, is that it has a thinner diameter per breaking strain than mono and so allows for greater casting distance.

Riley Pilot mono would still win it's nylon braid is strands it'll go a lot easier than mono will that's why I never use braid

I can't believe you ignored the diameter of the line when you carried out these test. But if braided line is really that weak I can't really believe how I wasted my money on spending 7 times more of what could have spent on buying the same length of monofilament. My very first time using braided line on light spin fishing on a mountain rocky river. It's time to find out the hard way lol !!!
@Saltstrong4 жыл бұрын
The main factor for most anglers in power, so that's what was made equal in this test. The benefit of braid is in its casting performance and feel of strikes given its thin diameter and no-stretch material. But the cons is that it's not as abrasion-resistant and it's easier for the fish to see in the water. So the line assembly we recommend is to use braid for the mainline and then add a ~2 ft mono/fluoro leader at the end that can handle the abrasion it may get exposed to while being less visible to the fish.

@@Saltstrong yeah thanks for the reply and suggestion. That's what I actually did today. I added 70 cm of fluorocarbon leader at the end of my braided line to tie the lure and it worked pretty nice. Most of the time my braided line floats in the water and rarely comes to contact with any rock .I loved the feeling of braided line as a first timer.
