As Gels mentioned, CF is very light and strong. Please keep in mind that most aftermarket CF parts are covered fiberglass. For example, every so-called carbon fiber hood for an Evo VIII/IX weighs more than the stock aluminum hood at less than 20lbs. There was one dry fiber hood that was available for the platform for a short time. Custom order. It weighed 6lbs and cost quite a bit. CF wraps are no different than plastidip. CF accessories fall into the same class. Don't be that guy. :)

Felix F can you please enlighten me, whats the difference between carbon fiber wrap and the one made by car manufacturer ? What i meant by wrap is, the shop apply carbon fiber sheet on top of a mould. Not the vinyl wrap. I tried to google and read through forums, but could not find any answer. Thanks in advance

@@MegaCibai the manufacturer will use carbon fiber all the way through. The aftermarket to keep costs down will use a layer of carbon on top and bottom to give it the look, but none of the benefits. Can still be marketed as carbon fiber so the profit margin is pretty large.

@@MegaCibai so the top layer is genuine carbon fiber. But a real carbon fiber part is made entirely of carbon fiber. Most places sell fiberglass parts, with a layer of carbon on top. It's almost impossible to tell without buying it. Best thing to do is look at shipping weight if that's available. A true carbon part should be only a few pounds (a carbon hood is like 6 pounds). Forums usually talk about if it's genuine or not

I think for a daily driver, a carbon fiber stock shaped or vented hood and a small wing spoiler are enough to give the car some flare and make it stand out without it looking too ridiculous. Once you get to the carbon fiber doors, fenders, body kits, etc, then it gets expensive not only cuz they're expensive in and of themselves but also cuz carbon fiber is a lot more expensive to paint if you decide to paint those body panels. For what it would cost to paint all those panels, you could get the car wrapped with a really cool design.

As working in the Aerospace industry it has lost some “wow factor” for me but I do love the look of a satin 2x2 weave which looks amazing. You do have to watch for delamination when working/using it. It is still amazing to me that it has such a strength to weight ratio. I have been debating making some smaller trim pieces for my car but we’ll see how it turns out.

The answer is a resounding no. I have it inside and out on almost the entirety of my foRS and I regret every piece. The weight savings was negligible, the cost was astronomically, fitment isnt always perfect, and it gets damaged SO EASILY. And it shows damage 100x worse than painted panels. Rocks beat the hell out of it and it looks like absolute trash unless your constantly sanding, and reapplying resin and clear.

I bought a pretty expensive carbon fiber hood for my Camaro and it looked good out of the box. I went to the body shop today looked at it for a bit and told them to take it off. i could see the waves in the hood ever so slight but they were there. I'm sure you can get an awesome looking hood but I would recommend putting yourself in a situation where you can look at it closely for waves and other imperfections. If you have an awesome car and the hood is not perfect it will stick out like a sore thumb. At least for me. No more carbon fiber.

Usually cracks in CF is down to material science. About 90% of "CF hoods" on the market aren't CF, they are fiberglass hoods with a carbon fiber skin. Fiberglass has a higher expansion/contraction rate than carbon fiber. What happens when you laminate 2 different materials with different exp/con rates? It flexes and bows, fibers (carbon) breaks and the resin becomes stressed and eventually cracks. There are also different ways of "curing" resin. There is chemical curing, where you mix a catalyst to cure a resin, UV cure process, and then there is the autoclave process, where an autoclave is used (basically a vacuum chamber oven) to cure the resin with heat. There are different types of fiberglass that are lighter and stronger than carbon fiber, but carbon fiber is more thermally stable (using the autoclave process). Issues with hazing and sometimes cracking, has to do with the cure process. UV light in these cases, is continuing to cure the resin, making it over-cured, unless an UV protectant (I don't think that's a word, but oh well) coat is applied

@@pwnzlikeme normally done because it's cheaper along with the resin process involved. Vacuum bagging and chem/uv curing a piece, doesn't require a $50,000+ autoclave. But then the resin isn't thermally stable. There is a reason why plane parts and high stress parts require thermal setting. A fiberglass part with a carbon fiber skin, doesn't mean it's carbon fiber. If anything, it's weaker, because of the points I said previously
@artsohc
@artsohc 5 жыл бұрын
I would add that true carbon fiber has a heat benefit as well. When you look at intakes truly had of CF, the air temperatures they achieve are always lower than their metal and plastic counterparts. I does make me sad that most CF parts you see online are fiberglass+CF wrap+clear coat. I wonder if it is purely cost prohibitive or some other factor that leads to this.
@MuhammadIrfan-ye5zf
@MuhammadIrfan-ye5zf 5 жыл бұрын
Pure carbon fibre will need autoclave (high pressure oven) which is not cheap. Also with bigger parts like car hood you need vacuum infusion of which the consumables (vacuum bag and tape) is not cheap and PITA. With just wrapping, you coat the resin by hand and dry at room temperature.

99 percent of "carbon fiber" company car parts are all LOOKS! So your seibon cf hood is mostly fiberglass. It is basically all fiberglass with one layer of cf on top.(not strong) an all Carbon hood would probably run you 700$ just in material. How to tell if your part if it's all Carbon? Look behind, if it doesn't have cf pattern it's fiberglass.

Car Hood will probably require 2 meter square of CF. Now, you need to 8 layers (4 for outside parts, 4 for the inner parts). Price for 1 meter square of CF (non aerospace grade) is $12.5. 2*8*12.5 is $200 plus $30 of consumables. As any good pricing strategy, material is 25% of retail price. Hence at $230/0.25 is $920.

Personally i feel if you're doing carbon for esthetics they i say just go for carbon wrap. And if for weight reduction yoy best go the whole 9yards and might aswell diet too loool u know what they say.. Weight reduction starts at home lol full race mode

Even the best carbon vinyl doesnt look the same. It's all personal preference. I've had carbon vinyl wrapped parts and ended up buying real carbon because it looks so much better.

@@brainbenton1270 thanks for you insight. Yea dude i guess its all personal preference. I was probably thinking in a cost effective mannor. However if you've got the money goo for it.

Carbon is good and all until it starts to crack or the clear starts to fade....but I do think it’s worth it on a full racecar when it’s on a showcar why even worry about weight reduction.

Okay, what If I want a carbon fiber body panel or hood or what ever, but I dont like the look of it its just ehh not my style and doesnt fit my car. Can I wrap the carbon fiber afterwards? I want the weight reduction of the carbon fiber with out the look

The Nissan Z32 300ZX was introduced in February 1989 as a 1990 model. The Bugatti EB110 was introduced in 1991, so how do you explain how the EB110 stole the 300ZX's headlights? You got your facts reversed. The updated Lamborghini Diablo actually used the Z32 300ZX's headlights under license for their 1999 and later Diablos. Lamborghini simply covered the Nissan logos with strips of carbon fiber.

I honestly want to swap my hood and trunk out for carbon fiber OE looking ones despite them being 700+ dollars a piece, but what exact care do I need to do for them?

Corbin The Suicune i'm no expert, but all i do is wash and wax and mine still looks good. its been a year so far. but the fact that i got my car ceramic coated probably helps as well 😅
@madmaxblaster

You can go one more by applying clear bra over it and then the ceramic coating. The gel coating on cf are known to fade over time especially with the hood being beaten by the sun's rays.

Ceramic coating, or alot of clearcoat on each piece. So expect to spend 1000 a piece if not more considering the process. Also, once you get those pieces it's a slippery slope to the 400 dollar front lip, 700 dollar side skirts, and the 600 dollar rear diffuser😂😂

Hey guys, one correction, but I'm pretty sure the first carbon monocoque was used in the mclaren mp4/4 in f1 racing, so mclaren didn't steal the idea from Bugatti

@jkroemer2685 5 жыл бұрын
@@superevilnine9 Long story short... Guy backed over my car and ruined the entire hood, bumper etc. Allstate adjuster came out to look at it and estimate the damage. Because it's 26 yrs old none are really in the scrap yard and parts like that especially. So they quoted me a new OEM hood $730 from Mazda (discontinued of course) and I asked him does it have to be a aluminum hood or can I do aftermarket? So I looked up a Seibon hood and found it at a better price and we quoted it with that lol. Saved me enough $$$ from having the car totaled out too!
