Jordan, as a trans man, I really appreciate that you pointed out people misgendering trans people in videos and not editing it out. It is so frustrating when I see that because then it makes me reflect on the person and thinking if they would or are doing the same to me. You can easily re-film the clip and put it in, it's really that easy. Instead of subjecting viewers to see you misgendering someone, repeatedly, even if you're correcting yourself. It makes them look so bad.

+1 to this as a masc NB, it was hard enough for me to get to a place where I didn't feel like wanting my correct pronouns was me being whiny and difficult, the last thing I need is to be bipping around on youtube winding down for bed and suddenly be confronted with the knowledge that there are still plenty of people out there who don't care if they make me feel like I can't just exist, as long as they don't have to think too hard about their words

that's very true. It's shown not only how people regard the well-being of others, but also my own boundaries. We have a (now ex) housemate who I had been friends with for a year already who repeatedly went to bars, visited friends, and even brought said friends (none of which any of us knew, and who were from different cities and towns) into our house without even as much of a warning after we repeatedly confronted him about it and clearly established boundaries that he continued to violate. As horrible as the pandemic is, we might never have learned how selfish and disrespectful he was without it.

I do have sympathy for people who cope socially despite the pandemic in the same way drug addiction is a mental health crisis. What I have zero tolerance for is people who deny being in those situations/about being vaccinated/tested. My dad has a chronic lung condition and covid would kill him. When someone lies about being safe, they’ll be guilty of manslaughter if they make my dad sick. Like people drunk driving, I have 0 warm feelings for them. No excuses.

This is such an intelligent conversation. I got really excited when you were talking about Kanye and Black Trump supporters as well as pro-Trump trans people. I think that the idea is that they think they're protecting themselves and taking back autonomy, but in actuality, they undermining the efforts that are trying to get us to a safer and more equal place. It also enables people with malintent to make bad faith arguments based on them and their disingenuous claims. I am always so surprised to hear someone actually delve into this in a constructive way, and I'm really glad to hear you guys specifically do it.

How you guys feel about Kanye is how I feel about my dad! 😃 He's always been someone I looked up to and he's so clever and smart and talented, but since he sat in front of FOX "News" right before Obama got into office...I'm so bitter and disappointed that he sincerely believes in what they say and push. I consider myself so lucky that my dad was the exact opposite. He identified himself as a republican until his fifties, but by the time Obama’s first run came around he was like, “man…this party is a dumpster fire.” Now he’s a proud democrat who has become a surrogate father figure for a trans woman he works with who was rejected by her republican parents. He also donates heavily to Planned Parenthood every year because, in his words, “people need access to those services to live healthy and happy lives, and it’s ridiculous that all these a-holes without uteruses are trying to dictate whether they can or can’t have it.” There’s hope…sometimes it just takes the right experiences, timing, and arguments to open people’s minds. But they do have to be willing to admit they’ve been wrong and change as a result of that. That’s the hardest part.
@shesmyvampire
@shesmyvampire Жыл бұрын
@@erinnielsen5423 That's so wholesome and I sincerely really love that for him. Unfortunately, I don't even have a sliver of hope for my dad because he conflates "being a cHriStiAn" with being a Republican and he says that all FOX News anchors don't lie because they're Christians too. He's been silent on the whole Tucker Carlson text evidence in that Dominion lawsuit because he knows that it goes against what he's been saying for years to me now. I can't bring that stuff up because he takes it as a personal attack if I do. I really am so happy for your dad that he could recognize the dumpster fire for what it is and leave it in its own ashes. Bless him for giving back too.

@@shesmyvampire I’m so sorry to hear that…it’s really sad to see people go against their own interests because they place so much faith in an ideology (as in the alt-right that’s slowly becoming mainstream, not referring to Christianity - believe what you wanna believe as long as you don’t use it to hurt people). My dad’s brothers are all the same way and unfortunately we just can’t talk about certain topics anymore. I hate standing idly by while they continue to vote for people who do not care about what happens to them, but short of some miraculous circumstance that somehow changes their mind, what can you do… I’m so sorry that you’re in that situation with your dad.

There's something special about Jordan's brand of humor. When you flatly drop "flavor away" or "Gucci Gucci mane" with no change in facial expression, I burst into laughter. I've never really caught on to dry humor very well, but the deadpan delivery is so spot on that I'm not only buying into the conversation but also giggling along with it throughout. Don't get me wrong, Jarvis makes me feel supremely *Premium* on the GOLD channel and I can't get enough of the jokes there lately (I've just discovered all of these channels). I'm having the most fun and now feel challenged to go back and watch the 2017 stuff lol ... speaking of which, lately I can't remember what happened last week versus two weeks ago or six months ago. I blame pandemic brain (aka trauma brain), so if you're not remembering what was in a previous episode, I call that normal these days - and by these days, I mean the last two years!

I feel like jordan’s argument on the compartmentalization of harmful ideologies such as pro gun ownership can be compared to people’s reactions to their content creators/music artists committing very harmful actions who don’t take the time to understand the consequences and remain silent once the time comes for them to apologize. An example could be seen in where, despite some of these creators having lengthy sexual assault allegations and acts of racism and misogyny, people tend to continue to support them regardless of them knowing full well the content creator’s actions impacted such a large amount of people due to their influence. Consistently I’ve seen the reasoning for not disassociating from their creators while knowing the actions and the reasons why they’re harmful is “separating the content from the creator” (or something along the lines). which in my view, is absolutely harmful to those who they have affected because you’re directly indulging in their content in your own satisfaction while your engagement directly funds them and their behavior and just tells me “hey i don’t really care what they did” despite them saying they do care about these issues. i understand those who have an emotional attachment to their creators. however, actively ignoring their actions while blaming people in conclusion that it’s just “cancel culture” doing its job is almost as harmful as committing the actions themselves.

Jarvis talking about differing political opinions in friends is really reassuring. I feel as though people sometimes don’t understand why others care about morals when making friends. When you’re actively voting against me and others like me as a black man(or poc in general) that’s doesn’t sit well with me. When you’re intentionally voting for policies that suppress lgbtq+ people, Less fortunate people, ex cons and people who are already sentenced and in jail, I can’t be friends with you. you could be a cool person, but that doesn’t trump you actively voting against marginalized groups. Also I couldn’t agree more on the incel convo. All you need is confidence and just improve yourself before finding a girlfriend, or boyfriend or whatever you want.

My least favourite as a trans woman is when on the phone with some various company and they want me to say my deadname to verify my identity, then after that all of a sudden when previously they hadn't said my initially stated preferred name to me at all, they work my deadname into every single sentence for the rest of the call. I can't even trust like, institutions to not do this stuff, so yeah, I have super low expectations with just random people on the internet and youtubers and stuff and am always in the exasperating position of being really refreshed to see good behavior but also feeling like I am giving out a gold star to people for just, not being vile.

I connect with Jordan's statement on devaluing debate as a metaphor for / parallel to 'don't have to tolerate intolerance.' "Kumbaya with the third reich" is about the best I've heard it described. You're entirely correct - we are (and have been) at the point where we shouldn't humor or dignify the extreme and obtuse arguments of far right with "debate," as it's not earnest or good faith in the first place, and even if it were, it's dangerous thinking.

I'm so glad Jordon said the thing about not being able to deal with and talk to people when they have a certain belief. For a long while I felt this, and I would always call people out on things and be the minority. I thought there was something wrong with my brain where I could just not handle the presence and be friends with someone in spite of their belief in something harmful. Now I embrace that part of me, because it allows me to see myself as someone who is moral and has minimal regrets. But I'm glad someone else said it. And whenever I rewatch this episode and get to around the 50min mark it makes me feel content.

I think a large driving force of conflict with the gun debate or other fighting arguments from bipartisan conversations, is that the US, as a society, has formed individualist ideals. Jarvis brought up the fact that in Asian communities people wore masks way before COVID, and that’s because they have community-focused ideals, and will sacrifice some small discomfort for the safety of the people around them. In the US, we aren’t taught that kind of self-sacrifice. Instead we are taught to do stuff for ourselves and almost only for ourselves. Therefore people believe that whatever they do or think is right and they will not change for the safety of others around them or in their nation. I don’t think it’s necessarily compartmentalizing, like Jordan said, although that can be part of it. I think it’s that people are so individualistic and so self-driven in a bad way that they choose to keep their guns to sleep with over someone else feeling even just a little bit safer.

Problem is I realized I genuinely do have a problem with self-love (being a trans woman, specifically right now, as my rights are being stripped away, isn’t the best for feeling like I am worthy of love.) but I used to do it before I realized I was trans, saying it was just an act I put on for attention, trying to obscure the fact that it was something I did out of a conflict of self-worth. I know that’s a different experience and all, but I resonated with your words. Also, thank you guys for being so chill and trans-supportive. As you had said, it genuinely sucks that I just have to expect being oppressed. It’s nice to hear people supporting trans people.
