Sounded like trying to make Jeep look good to me. Cherry picking the old Toyota as a compare (one of the other least safe heaps available) and effectively saying euroncap don't know how to extrapolate results while his knowledge of this is obviously almost nothing. Jeep wrangler is the second worst car tested last 3 years in Euro Ncap it got 1 out of 5 stars when anything less then 4 stars is terrible. 3 of the 6 worst cars in Adult protection is A Jeep. The other 3 was Fiat Panda, Suzuki Jimny and VW UP. So yes FCA and Jeep is one of the worst cars when it comes to saftey. Who remember the coverup of the Grand Cherokee in Europe? Go watch Teknikens Värld if you dont. Jeep tried to blame the newspaper but in the end they had to change tires on all Jeeps in the nordic and went back to redesign the car and released an update 2 years later.

@@joetz1 thats not true. Euro Ncap is about everything. Only thing US test do better is rollover test. European would se a car that rollover unsafe in the first place. When american in high suvs and trucks are used to that their vehicle will roll over and feel like they need that protection. I forgot US test also do headlight tests. Unfortantly the best headlight you can find on European cars are not legal in the US (they are to bright laser style) so you often get old and pretty crappy headlights from European makers. (that is the only reason why Volvo do not do that good in US tests, bad headlights) Euro ncap look at a larger picture then the american tests. So first they do all the crashtest, small front overlaps, front and side impact etc. After that they realy test the saftey systems not only look at them at paper. But in real world test the figure out wich brand have a system that works in realty an not only on paper like Jeeps. They test how good a car is at avoiding a crash etc. The Jeep Wrangler failed on everypoint accept whiplash and pretensioners of the belt, (1.7 out of 2 points in whiplas thats good but not great, pretensioners got 2 out of 2 so they work great without flaws.) you can go in and look at the details at eruoncap.com. Sturdy is not allways a good thing in a crash, you want the car to absorb the forces as much as possible. Thats why the Wrangler failed its construction was about to fail allredy at the test in a speed of only 50 kmh 31 mph. any speed above that it would be a complete disaster. US test is done at a marginal higher speed of 35 mph or 56 kmh. But you realy realy do not want to crash in speeds higher then that in an Wrangler.

I was on a motorcycle trip and I had stopped at a pilot truck stop to get a coke. I was outside when I heard a crash. I went to check it out. A semi had pulled out onto the highway and for some reason had stoped , blocking the 4 lane highway in both directions. The speed limit was 55. A guy in a jeep rubicon could not stop and he t-boned the semi trailer just behind the rear truck duals. The jeep went 3 quarters under the semi trailer before it had stoped. I was thinking this might not end well. It had been probably 45 seconds and I see this guy pull himself out through the rear door window. The guy was not hurt and was not bleeding. I was thinking again, WOW. The rear axle and tires were not touching the road.. this guy had hit the semi trailer so hard that the jeep frame had bent. I was thinking again, I just might buy me one of those some day! Great informational content on the jeep.

Watching TFL try to find a way to justify the safety ratings is really funny. You are right that it's safer than before, but it's just not a particularly safe car. That's ok - it's fine to prioritize off-road prowess over safety, but just say that. But watching the nonsense justification of IIHS tests being unrealistic is just nuts. This video felt like TFL doing whatever they could to make FCA happy.

The meaning of safety ratings is being devalued. You could trust the safety ratings when they were about the survivability of accidents. But now part of the safety ratings are whether your vehicle is equipped with gadgets like automatic stopping. So now instead of telling me if a vehicle is safe, the safety ratings now tell me I am not safe unless I buy features I will never buy.
@RahulShah87
@RahulShah87 4 жыл бұрын
@@drwisdom1 that's sort of silly. Safety ratings are about *not* getting into a collision in the first place. The great thing about IIHS safety ratings is that it's designed by people putting billions of dollars of their money where their mouth is - the ratings are designed around insurance claims and insurance rates. I trust them a lot more than some random dude on the Internet who doesn't like safety features.

@@RahulShah87 Do you also believe in JD Power ratings? Manufacturers spend lots of money buying those so they must be meaningful. The ratings say if you don't have automatic stopping your car isn't safe. People with automatic transmissions tend to run into things so may benefit from that feature. I drive manuals, pay attention, and don't tailgate so in 48 years of driving I have needed automatic stopping zero times. But I'm totally scared that living in Colorado automatic stopping will falsely trigger due to rocks in the road (which my salesman told me is an issue) and cause people to rear end me. I believe gas means go and brake means stop and negating that functionality makes the vehicle less predictable and more dangerous. I want to know how well the vehicle protects me if someone crashes into me.
@RahulShah87

When I was in High School in 1999 I have a 1985 Dodge Diplomat. I experienced this exact collision. I was coming into an exaggerated S curve as a drunk driver in a 92 Camaro was exiting it. Right before she hit me with all 4 wheels in my lane and me half off the road, as I closed my eyes I was centered in her headlights. Her vehicle went right down the side of my frame and both myself and my passenger exited the drivers side of the vehicle unscathed. It was almost the perfect 25% head on. Her vehicle spun off similar to what you see in the 4 runner you showed. Mine just kind of plowed through. The idea that this kind of crash "doesn't represent what Jeeps sees in the real world" is corporate bs speak imo. Side note: I loved my 92 Wrangler.

The JL appears to have a far more narrow and tapered front fender design than the JK which I think resulted in it not hitting the center of the frame and rather deflecting. The the front fender flares contain no extra structural extension beyond where the bumper ends from the front end frame structure, but this test is done at 25% of the front end where the JL doesn't have the support structure off of the bumper/frame. I bring that up as the Bronco does have frame extensions that are removable for more ture clearance. Considering they were added and designed to be removed I wonder if they experienced something similar and did this as a late stage solution to prove at least when it left the factory it should perform the way it did. But I imagine a full length steel bumper could negate the possibility of this happening since you are extending the structural absorption of the energy to the parts of the vehicle not covered in the factory design.

It's a tall vehicle with a soft suspension, removable doors, and removable roof. Who would have thought that it wouldn't be as safe as a new Volvo? LOL. Honestly, who cares, safety is probably the last priority one has when purchasing a Wrangler. If people only bought Wranglers based on practicality, they wouldn't have sold any. And honestly, other than the tip, it look like it did better than the 4Runner in this test. The 4Runner looked like it may have had quite a bit of cabin intrusion from that front wheel.

I observed during the slow-mo crash test of both vehicles that in fact the left front suspension mounts were torn off causing the front axle to rotate about its right suspension mountings resulting in the left front wheel being rotated directly under the chassis rail thus effectively launching the vehicle over to the right hand side on both vehicles tested. I guess the trick is if you're going to hit anything resembling a slight offset front collision, just aim dead center and you'll be just fine.

@@Xterraforce He just can't draw analytical conclusions in his interview. That is a legal liability issue. He's the VP of communications, not the head engineer of the cash test anaylsis department. I don't think the crash has anything to do with the axle. The steel part of the front body on the Jeep is narrower. Only plastic flares cover the wheels. This lack of steel in the offset front crash removes material which can deform and absorb energy in this test. Therefore the Jeep carries a lot of energy after the impact as evident by how far it went compared to the 4Runner and Ranger. This energy helps to tip it over. The front of the body basically forms a wedge which helps push the vehicle towards the passenger side and as soon as the collision advances to the A pillar location the Jeep begins to tip because almost non of the energy has been absorbed at this point and the vehicle has move a little towards the passenger side. Hitting the A pillar location with a glancing blow in the collision causes a large force to develop pushing the Jeep again to the passenger side and ultimately on it's side. You can see this clearly at 1:18 and 1:29. In the 4Runner (2:31) the A pillar location hits much more square and it looks like a majority of the energy is absorbed at this point. In the Ranger (2:50) it looks to hit less square and thus a force develops pushing the vehicle to the passenger side. So I think it has more to do with how the front of the Jeep body is designed. This is a key, almost iconic, aesthetic design element of Wranglers so you get what you get.

Independently if is true or not you’re sponsored by them people will find suspicious you jump in to justify the problems of your well known favorite brand. It just doesn’t look good even if you have the best intentions, smells too much like damage control. If it was a 4Runner doing this bad probably you will never do a video like this and you know it is true. Also the questioning of EuroNcap and Ancap ratings leave a lot to say. I’m a constant follower of your work and even when I find acceptable some bias regarding your local brands I think this is just too much obvious.

Good video. Your grammar and presentation make it enjoyable and easy to view. My first vehicle in 1974 was a 1963 Jeep CJ Tuxedo Park. Top speed - maybe 55. I tipped it twice. Once after spinning on ice and another after being run off the road by a careless driver coming toward me. Since then. I have owned many CJ type jeeps from a 73 through a 2012. I never considered them as a safe vehicle, but drove accordingly. Your report is good and I especially appreciate the distinction between a roll over and a tip over. Plus, in the crash test, I will be damned if that was 25% of the vehicle overlapping the crash barrier. Not much else could happen except a tip over. Good job.

I purchased a brand new 2003 Jeep Wrangler Sport and drove it for 10 years. I loved my Jeep, but one major issue with this well kept Jeep was that I got my first“Death Wobble” when I had only 20,000 miles on the vehicle. I was on 95 South between two 18 wheelers and the violent shake started at 50 miles an hour! The steering wheel was violently shaking and I had absolutely no control over my Jeep. I literally saw Jesus at that moment. I slowed down and vibration went away. Went to dealership, they changed tie rod and told me everything was fixed. A week later on the highway I got the “Death Wobble” again! This time a mechanic put brand new tires on my Jeep even though I only had 20,000 miles on my tires. That seemed to work for a while and then I just decided to sell it before it happens again. I’ve been told it’s an ongoing issue with all jeeps because of solid front axle design. It might be a good idea to consider this issue before buying a Jeep if your wife and kids going to ride with you!

I would agree with this assessment if the weaknesses of the Wrangler were inherently related to its offroad capability. Sure that's arguably the case for the tip-over problem (but, as you note, the 4Runner does fine there). But, while rollover is sort of an inherent hazard in tall SUVs with longer suspension travel, there's really no excuse for the weak passenger compartment, or the lack of protection for rear seat passengers. These features were simply value-engineered out to increase profits for FCA. Worse still, no provision is made to protect the passengers in the event of a tip-over/rollover despite the inherent risk. The 2020 Wrangler has only a small side airbag for the front seat occupants. At the very least, full curtain airbags would prevent rear seat passengers' heads from impacting the C-pillar or pavement in such a crash. Given the inherent risk of rollover, the responsible thing to do would have been to maximize protection for passengers if the vehicle did tip, but this clearly wasn't done. So now there's a scenario where, in an accident at well below freeway speeds, the vehicle can tip onto it's side and cause a significant head injury to passengers in the back (who are typically children). That should bother people. The safety deficiencies are optional, not inherent to the design. They could have been mitigated without compromising the vehicle, but haven't been. The old JK had a significantly higher death rate than the average in its class, (more than twice that of the 4Runner, and nearly twice that of the Xterra or FJ cruiser), and it seems FCA are not trying to remedy that in any serious way. The callous response of basically: "no matter how unsafe our vehicle is shown to be, we're still allowed to sell it," should tell consumers where FCA's priorities are. Despite my above critique, I agree that this thing isn't horrifically dangerous. What bothers me is that the problems could have been fixed if FCA was willing to spend just a little more money and make a just little less profit. There are real human beings who will die or be permanently disabled because someone at FCA wanted to squeeze out a tiny amount of extra profit for shareholders. As consumers, we really shouldn't reward this kind of behavior with our dollars. Maybe hold off a year and see how the Bronco does?

For better or for worse safety features and driving aids are becoming standard on even the cheapest entry level vehicles. It's nothing to brag about that the Wrangler comes with these driving aids when you can get them on any new car. It's a shame that the rear passengers don't get an airbag! That being said, I appreciate the Wrangler and it's dominance in the offroad scene. It's a great true SUV! This is coming from a loyal Toyota owner. See you on the trails!!

Obviously collisions at a high rate of speed result in more fatalities. The point of these tests is to compare vehicles using the exact same test so you can form an informed opinion about their safety. That's why they don't do crash tests at highway speeds. It's like the fuel economy tests. The test is not designed to tell you what mileage to expect, but multiple vehicles are tested with the exact same test parameters so you can compare the results of different vehicles meaningfully. You can say vehicle A will use less fuel than vehicle B based on the results. I do agree that you are the best safety feature of your car.

I’m kinda thinking it’s an unrealistic test. It seems to simulate a hitting a bridge abutment. So even if it was realistic for someone to drive straight into a bridge abutment with only a small overlap and without any steering or brake input, it’d be a single car accident. Hitting a 5 foot tall rigid immovable barrier does not seem in any way representative of colliding with another vehicle. The tests are informative for a crush and safety cage analysis, but I don’t think the vehicle dynamics after the primary collision are necessarily what would happen in a real world collision.

This seems to me like they will eventually have to redesign the vehicle entirely - just like what happened with the old Land Rover Defender - LR was unable to make the old design meet new safety regulations so they had to stop making it. It was completely redesigned and now you can get a Defender again, but it is watered down a lot.

The question I would have liked responded to by the IIHS rep is an evaluation of what kind of injuries the front passengers may have sustained. It didn’t look like the rollover or tip over (terminology) introduced significantly more damage to belted in front driver/passenger. Noted, rear seats - all bets are off. And noted the EU suggesting it barely protected front seated people even if it’s a bit subjective to go there. Thx for video, thx for objectivity, well done.

2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport for sale, slight fender damage on left side, will buff out, definitely not involved in an IIHS crash test in which it struck a solid structure at 40 mph, proceeding to roll over upon impact...

I was hit by a truck in my jk. I did spin before coming to a complete stop. I know wranglers are not the safest vehicle on the market and they aren't designed to be. I still felt safe in mine. I barely moved in my seat much and, surprisingly, the damage was only cosmetic. They aren't the most padded and probably don't have the best crumple patterns. My jeep kept me safe though.

There is an expectation that the car is safe whether you're fine with it's performance or not. To say Jeep is compromising on safety is very concerning and is gonna have big ramifications.

Ok FORD fanboy. Oh and I own a 19 F-150. The 2020 RAM 1500 beat the F-150 in safety ratings Amigo. Next the Bronco was never a better Off Roading Vehicle than the Wrangler. When it out does the Jeep in that department and when you can remove the doors and front window etc.... than we can talk.

A rollover and a tip over is different. A tip over is easier to recover at the scene where as a rollover has many variables. Know this from recovering different vehicles

A vehicle that tips or rolls on impact is not safe. It’s pretty simple. You don’t want to be upside down after a collision. Back seat safety in the Wrangler looks rather poor. I don’t know why these things are so popular.

I think i would prefer to follow the Euro Crash test result because as in the real world a crash would most likely happen at a somewhat higher speed than the Test and there would be so many variables to account for that i would have preferred stronger metal on the Pillars and floors etc. Most cars these days are sold by marketing/PR and there is not enough focus on the actual quality of the vehicle. That being said i would stay away from the Fiat/Chrystler brands due to quality issues and if i want a rock crawler i would choose a much better platform such as Ford or Toyota or even the older Mitsubishi etc, less breakage more fun and not as costly. Thanks for the video and your insight into the compromises however with much better options out there in my opinion , i would look elsewhere.

It's pretty self explanatory as to why it happened. The open fenders up front are why it does what it does. It's essentially a glancing blow to the real front structure of the vehicle.

idk if it's better than a motorcycle man 😅. I had an accident few months ago when I was cut off by a 18y kid in a camaro. I hit em in the right rear side at 40-30mph ish, I went airborne (mind you this is the highway with heavy traffic) literally nothing happened to me (had gloves helmet and jacket with all armor (shoulder back and elbow) ) my bike had its plastics broken and the front upper fairing stay broke. I ripped off the fairings and rode her home because I refused to over pay for a tow... My bike was a 05 CBR600RR

@@OutdoorAviator Dude please just stop. You are batshit crazy. Just because you got lucky doesn't change anything. Motorbikes are deadly period. They are significantly more likely to kill the rider than any vehicle on the road today. I used to ride bikes from 17-35 years of age and I raced them locally on the track. In fact in many states riders I used to know have stop riding due to the increased risks of getting killed by a Car on the road and the road conditions.
