As the owner of this locomotive, I am so proud of what Kyle over at TRS Trains has done to it. From the Smoke to the Respray ; to the light and the sound, it has been worth every penny, and it is amazing to see how many people like it! I'm very happy that you have enjoyed it too Jennifer! Happy Steaming!

This is the most impressive advancement I have seen in model railroading since the advent of DCC. While I am sure this is a bespoke service offered by Kyle of TRS Trains I would love to see him patent his invention and possibly license it to the mainstream manufacturers and and take it mainstream. In the short term, I am sure many of us are interested in rough prices for his bespoke services and or the availability of his kit for our own fitting. I hope to see more information on pricing and availability soon. Another great review as always Jennifer!

Lovely model. I won’t use bottled water either as the water is sourced from the ground will contains minerals. Use ironing water and it will smell nice, or distilled water. Collected water from a condenser tumble dryer is in-effect distilled water (evaporated from your washing then condensed).

Wow! that is impressive. Things have come a long way since I last pinned track to board. I am returning to the craft and I do class it as a craft, after a long tea brake of 40+ years. Will be going through your channel and watching videos to gain insight into how to progress with my layout when I finally get around to building it. Great to see this and will bear in mind for future.

It's also good to see the sound (and smoke!) synchronised with the wheel rotation too. Without that synchronisation I find it more immersion breaking than not having sound at all.

The only sound decoders I have in my locos that don't synchronise the chuffs with the wheel rotations are the ones that are from Hornby. ESU, MTH and Broadway Limited Imports all seem to manage it so why can't Hornby? There should be a CV or two that can be adjusted for the synchronisation but they don't seem to have them.

This is a better idea than the Hornby smoke oil, as you never know what fumes you are breathing in! Of course steam would do no harm. The only downside would be that the water vapour will condense on the scenary when it is very cold up in there in the winter. However, the colder it is, the more the steam will show up on the camera! Thanks for uploading.

Jennifer you mustn't use "bottled water " , but deionised or distilled water. Bottled water would be far far worse than typical tap water as it is full of impurities and would scale up very quickly.
@andrewdking
@andrewdking 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree, most bottled water originates from limestone or chalk hills. It's therefore full of hard disolved calcium salts which is a big no no. I doubt whether that little steam unit would like an acid kettle descaler being passed through it.
@johngibson4641
@johngibson4641 3 жыл бұрын
Wow wow wow ,, I ABSOLUTELY love it ,, so close to the real thing and closest to real thing that i have seen so far so thanks for showing us this. But the only thing im not keen on is the actual steam produced is water vapour and water vapour falls downwards towards the layout and track where water is not really something that anyone needs near there rolling stock running on track or buildings. If you are running a fair few of these types of locos or had these steam units going there would be a chance of excess moisture getting on the layouts growing mould which is something that are many people are allergic to. Mould produces mould spores which do get airborne are not good for asthmatics or peeps with chest or lung issues. I think if i had a choice i would use no smoke i mean i would let my imagination take its course as it does now. I am Not meaning to try bust anyone's bubble on this awesome idea as it is great and i do like it but it in my oppinion mixing water with electrics and porous material on layouts at large expense in $$$ & labour might not be the best idea for me or my asthma. Just a thougnt and no harm meant by this comment but is something to be considered. Cheers from John in Australia.

Fascinating system. While MTH has done decent smoke units in HO and O gauge, they, like the other companies, use smoke "fluid" (oil) for their smoke, which bothers me for both the odor, and wondering what the residue does to the tracks and scenery. This system by TRS Trains that uses bottled water is truly fascinating. No odor or residue to worry about.

@Ballinalower
@Ballinalower 3 жыл бұрын
Great idea to use water. But I can't help being amused how far behind their European and American counterparts UK model trains are. Smoke from the stack synchronized to the chuff sounds has been standard for a long time. I just checked when I uploaded a video of an MTH K4 Pacific with just that. It was 11 years ago. It also had working lights and a cab light. And the model wasn't new even then. And working headlights and marker lanterns have been standard for even longer as has factory sound. I have one 5 year old French loco with synchronized smoke from the chimney and steam from the cylinders on starting. As for close coupling, still very new to the British market, I have an HO train from 1973 with close coupling and power conducting couplings. That was on the market 48 years ago.

Interesting. But steam effects are definitely NOT the same thing as 'live steam', so your title is seriously misleading. It is well established and long established in the model railway community that 'live steam' means an arrangement where the model is actually driven by a steam engine - not an electrical motor, but actual steam driving pistons in cylinders. Boiling some water in an electrically driven loco does not make it 'live steam'. If anything, it's dead steam.

Bottled water; ABSOLTELY NOT. Its twice as hard as tap water. Not even deionised or fridge melt. Use zero parts per million distilled water eg from OO Live Steam Club. A characteristic of real OOLS is much more steam when it's cold and humid. Interesting this but the fun of real OOLS is that the .models actually behave like and have to be driven like the real thing. Nothing fake.
