Erin, thank you so much. I also was very late getting fall chores done, thank you grandkids for sharing the flu and RSV! So all the beautiful 70 degree days were spent trying to breathe on the sofa. I scurried around like a crazy woman yesterday, planting garlic, mulching dahlias, digging up elephant ears. It is encouraging to know we’re all in this boat together. And who ever gave you grief about your shed needs to get a life. We love seeing all your experiments and trials. I grew purple bell flower from seed last year all because you spoke of it. Never heard of it before. Thank you for everything you do, including freezing your buns off for us. Thanks

Erin what I enjoy most about your videos is that you keep it real and that's what many of us can relate to. You don't have many acres with several employees and have an abundance of funds to expend on one project after another. I'm sure we'd all like that but it's not reality. You inspire us to do what we can with what we have, whether it's recycling plants, doing very late seasonal chores, making do with lack of funds, having a messy space....you keep it real! Also, I want to thank you for suggesting (albeit through Harvest and Chill, about the photo container for seed storage. Initially I was keen on the idea because I wanted something vintage, some old tin or something with character. After not being able to find what I had in mind I purchased the photo box and love it! It works out wonderfully. Thank you again and keep up the hard work.

I'm telling you, when someone gives me grief about my yard or shed (even though they're right) I feel like I should have a gift salami to hand them and say "you win". 🤣 I look forward to your videos so much. Just great and down-to- Earth. Also, gardening is to be enjoyed..anyone who picks on another person, really isn't living happy. Think on that...insults don't even occur in the mind of a happy individual. Maybe a cheap salami is what they need 🤣

I planted tulips in an old metal tub last year and stored the tub in my retired parent’s un-heated milkhouse over winter. I watered them a bit but maybe should have done it more over winter. In spring when green peeked out, I moved them outside. The tulips lasted for weeks and weeks. They were beautiful. And they came up at a sad time for our family as my dad had just passed away. So this fall, I thought I would do it again. I bought more bulbs and the cold got here before I could plant them. So this week, I will be planting that old metal tub with tulips again. And when the anniversary of losing my dad comes, I will remember to go check my tulips 🌷

Glad you mentioned putting tulips in pots, I did so last year but they did not survive. I think that I did the opposite and over watered, also we had a late frost, and they atrophied and rotted. I plan to try again, but have been afraid to. Fingers crossed for yours and mine.

7° wow! We haven't gotten anywhere near that cold here in NE Ohio. I have felt so far behind this autumn, more so than usual. I think it's because we had mostly lousy weather in September, which is usually one of the loveliest months here. But we've had several reprieves, during which I try to prioritize and get caught up on at least the most important tasks. Today I finally got my narcissus bulbs planted. I found some various bulbs in the garage from last autumn that never got planted, so if I get a chance, I'll put them in the ground. Nothing to lose, right? All of the plants I bring inside over the winter are in the sunroom. Here's hoping for a winter that isn't too horrific!

I laughed out loud at the tool frozen in the container. I found one in mine yesterday too. I am usually on top of all the fall things in the garden, but not this year. I did the same thing you did, enjoyed the warm, mild fall, and then suddenly it froze (Green Bay, WI). It all works out in the end.

My husband bought a leaf collector/ mulcher? machine and it was a game changer for us. Now we do have a small yard but it made leaf collecting so much faster and easier than the traditional leaf blower plus the lawn mower mulching. So good and well done, thank you. I live at 6500' elevation in the Sierra Nevada, (Lake Tahoe). We had a gorgeous "extended" Autumn and I'm feeling so validated by this episode of yours. The "last minute scramble" pre ground freeze is never really mentioned online, but hardy climate Gardner's certainly relate. I love that you mentioned the need to straighten up the bulb storage area of your shed/garage as I too had the same need as I was hauling in pots, bulbs, tubers, tools, etc.... When Winter sets in more, no more "warm" days to be had and the garden is fully tucked in until the Spring, may you enjoy being cozied up by the fire, relaxing, warm and daydreaming your next years garden..... Thanks for sharing your late fall gardening reality, you had me giggling. Seasons Greetings, Tara

I really enjoyed this video as I think most of us have been caught off-guard by the weather. One day it's 70 and the next day in the low 40s to high 30s. Also, I wish I could send some of our leaves to you; we have an abundance of leaves and I have never seen so many acorns as we have this year. We live in coastal Virginia and I still have geraniums blooming on our deck. Until this weekend we were 10 inches below with our rainfall. I have planted some bulbs, but I still have a few bags to plant. I guess this is what makes gardening so much fun and keeps us on our toes. By the way, if people were "upset" by your shed/garage, I would hate to think what they would say about ours - a combination of items from two sets of parents who downsized, but didn't want to dispose of said items. You have a positive spirit and that's what counts!

Hi Erin, I had the same issue. Lovely weather working slowly at getting things cut back as light frost took them. Bought 50% off bulbs, them the polar vortex moved in for 4 days & also dumped snow. It finally warmed up & melted. I rescued my dahlias (first time growning) they are still wrapped in newspaper in the wheelbarrow in the garage. It’s been just above freezing so they should be ok for while yet. Got my bulbs planted & hostas cut back this last week. I have about 30-40 minutes of daylight each day when I get home to run out & work. The clematis still needs to be cut so I can start Christmas lights on my porch. But it’s raining today. So the fun continues next week. My garage is a disaster, so don’t worry about your shed. It’s all about the flowers 🌸😀

I was also out panic-planting bulbs in the cold this weekend. I plant bulbs in plastic pots and bury the pots in the garden. I cover mine over with leaves and a couple inches of dirt. In the spring I dig them out and put them in a warm sunny spot, pretty much zero winter maintenance required. I do tete-a-tete daffs and tulips together. I'm in southern ontario canada, it most definitely gets as cold here as it would for you in Wisconsin. I've tried unheated garages but the bulbs just rot on me here. Thanks for your channel, I've learned so much from you!

A tip on storing your tulip pots inside your unheated garage is to stack the potted bulbs inside a covered galvanized garbage can. Mice love those tulips in the winter months. They will chew through a plastic garbage can to get to them. Love your tulip choices. That Slawa tulip is a face along with similar Gavota. Stay warm up your way.

Oh I hear you as I’m in Milw…it was 70 on Monday & 30 on Friday & all the pots I had outside were frozen. I had to leave for a trip too, so now I’m back & cleaning it all up. The pots are still frozen, so I have to move them in the garage so in a empty them. I have been playing around with forcing or growing bulbs in pots in our unseated garage. I was told on a gardening FB group the issue with bulbs in an unseated garage is they thaw & freeze & that makes the tulips rot. So last year I put the bulbs in pots in the garage & then when the soil froze, I put them in a plastic bin full of leaves… this was to help the pot stay frozen & then in a few months, I removed the lid. My issue is I examined the bulbs briefly to see if they looked like they were mushed & they didn’t… but I don’t recall how they looked when they bloomed. I need to keep better notes on that.

We all need to take more time to enjoy the garden! But wow, we got caught off guard too... It was just too warm here in New England, and then it wasn't and there were the 100s and 100s of bulbs LOL...
