I went back to school, after 25 years in another profession. Unlike most older adults, I went to school on campus with the young folks. As a woman of color with a son, I made these observations; Regular average young white males-non Gay and non Athletes- seem beaten down. It's almost as if they're unwanted in academia.

As a white woman in her 40s, I hold the door open for whoever's behind me (or in front coming to it at same time). sometimes it's a man, and if he's close to my age, you can tell is like I should be doing that for you but will still smile at me and thank me as he walks through. I am Southern and live in a fairly Southern state. I don't understand these people that get pissed. I have had women be snidy at me for holding the door for them. SMH I smile and say thank you for whoever holds the door. Doesn't matter gender, ethnic background, or age. ❤

It saddens me when it happens to be a black man and he is shocked that I , a white southern woman near 70, will hold it open and smile. I always tell them "Turn about is fair play" It seems to smooth it out for them and they show that they understand I would do it for anyone. I do it for anyone with packages or a full cart or a stroller, same, same is same. curtesy is not a racial thing, kindness has no color or creed, people are people. Period !!!

My grandson tried that calling the cops thing when my daughter tried to spank him. When the cop got there, she told him how the boy had been acting, and how he had fought her when she tried to spank him. The cop gave my daughter his personal business card with the kid standing right there watching. He told her that if he gave her problems again to call him dirrectly, and he'd come over and hold him down while she spanked him. He was maybe 10 and big for his age, so he thought he should be the "man" of the house since she was a single parent. The cop had him toeing the line from then on. Kids crave boundries, and a boy needs a strong man to tell him where those boundries are, cause all too frequently, mama don't cut the mustard once he gets bigger than her.

I remember hearing from a father that he actually called a cop to supervise a spanking so it was abuse. He had a convo with the cop afterward and said it wasn't unusual for them to come out and just watch kids get spanked to make sure it was legal 😆 Sad and funny story to me.

I recently watched a colorized video of the streets of Harlem, New York City, captured in the 1930s. Blacks and whites going about their daily business together. The streets were bustling. There seemed to be no animosity or tension. Both blacks and whites were dressed stylishly and impeccably. The streets were practically spotless. No trash lying around. And VERY FEW of the people on the streets were obese. Not even the black females. They all seemed like they had places to go and things to do. Beat cops were standing on the corners. They looked relaxed and unconcerned, bored even. It's nothing like that now. What happened? The welfare state?

@@brendajones5989 I am sorry that has been your life experience. Male family members and good samaritans in public have helped and protected me my entire life. My father had an emergency debit card for me up until I graduated college, my brother and brother in law have come to my rescue for car emergencies multiple times. Good samaritans have helped me carry heavy objects or have stepped in when I need help. I can't speak for every white man on the planet, however my experience is that they like to feel needed, play "superman" and protect their female family members or women who they perceive as part of their community.

When I was in high school, I was kicked out and had to spend a semester in “opportunity school”. This school was in the place for “bad kids”. And that’s fair. I was certainly a bad kid who had zero respect for teachers, deans, principals, whatever…. There were 2 white kids the semester I was there. I was one of them. I only had one incident. A kid in class was sitting in front of me and turned around to try to punk me out of my $. Immediately, another kid stepped to him, and shut it down. He told him to leave me alone in so many words. It was tense. After that, for whatever reason, I became friends with him. I don’t know why he stuck up for me. Never asked, and he never told me. We only hung out at that school. I lived on the other end of Las Vegas, and he lived in north town. We couldn’t have been further apart in race, culture, religion, etc. While I was at that school, as scary as it was and shit can pop off at any moment, I was safe. I learned how to carry myself. I learned that most people, are just talking shit. I grew up in Vegas during my teens. The 90’s. OMG I MISS THE 90’s

These are great. To be honest, White and Black cultures are WILDLY different, so I think it’s best if everyone lives around their own. That goes for any culture. This creates peace and harmony and is best for everyone. But there’s nothing wrong with things that are different. It doesn’t mean we are enemies. Humans just like familiarity, in everyday life. It’s how we’re wired. There’s still tons that we have in common as humans and there’s no reason to hate each other. Everyone is just trying to survive this tough thing called life. I hold doors open for women all the time. I hold doors open for men too. Most are appreciative. I have held one open one time where a woman (white) said to me “I can do it myself. You don’t have to hold it open for me just because I’m a woman.” With the inflection in her voice you could tell she was basically calling me a misogynist. My son, when he was like 13/14, held the door open for a lady and called her ma'am, like I RAISED him to do. She didn't know his mother was right there and she got rude about it "Don't call me ma'am and I am capable of holding my own doors open! This is what's wrong with society..." and went on. Having worked retail most of my life in South Florida I've encountered a language barrier many, many times. It's nearly always Spanish & goes one of two predictable ways- Customer is pleasant, asks if I speak Spanish & when I say no we work together in a mix of pantomime & Google translate to get them what they want & when they hold out a handful of change while paying I make a point of counting out the coins I'm taking OR Customer aggressively asks if I speak Spanish, then demands I get someone who does (not always possible), is a problem during the whole transaction then when walking away starts speaking English. I don't understand the point of pretending you don't speak English when you actually do, but I see it a lot & it infuriates me.

My aunt who is a teacher for like 30+ years She’s that type of teacher who always would notice the “bad kids” & be stern but also help them & realize why they were acting out & the school would always give her the “bad kids” cuz she was the only one that could get through to them. & these kids grew up & would always tell her thank you for helping me as a kid, their parents would always tell her thank you for helping their kids.. but now a days it’s a dangerous situation for her to do since kids are even more violent & basically have 0 consequences to that.. now is the first time she’s even considered quitting cuz she’s known teacher friends that have gotten beat up by their students. I graduated in 00 and all through the late 80’s & the 90’s in Lexington Ky at least it was like our generation had killed racism. Everyone got along and if you didn’t it was cause some dumb kid/teenage shit. It wasn’t cause skin pigmentation. My city has more schools than I can count and the high school I went to had nearly 5k students so it wasn’t a tiny school by any means. We had a lot of kids from the downtown and inner city areas and these are the guys/girls we all went to school with, played ball with and went to party’s with. As an elementary school kid I remember high school kids having rifles and shotguns in the rear windshield at the school parking lot and there weren’t shootings. We had 4 Lexington PD officers who roamed the halls and campus every day from my first day freshman year all the way till the day I graduated. What and when did all this change? Why are kids even thinking about race? Why have kids decided shooting classmates was the next option? Why aren’t schools protected like they used to be?
