The Jaguar XF is an extremely popular choice of used executive saloon, and for good reason. They offer great looks, interior design, comfort, space and even economy in the right form. Coupled with that you have the fantastic Jaguar XFR which I awarded my Car of The Year in 2020...
This model though, is something of a unicorn - the Jaguar XF 4.2 SV8, a supercharged XKR powered sleeper if ever there was one. With 420 horsepower on tap and a 0-60 time of 5 seconds and change for barely hot hatch money, the appeal is clear. But what is this rare beast like to drive? And how does it compare to the more obvious XFR and more extreme XFR-S? Let's review the Jaguar XF 4.2 SV8 Supercharged and find out!

Yup I love my sv8 and plan on keeping it forever, especially when it was only around for a short time and will hooefully increase in value and respect in the future.

I've owned my SV8 for a bit over a year now, 138k (but wears those miles really well) Bought for £6200. Couldn't agree more, it's a bit of a sleeper, subtle and not too shouty, though mine has an 'R' front bumper (fitted by a previous owner). Has proved very reliable so far, and it's a rare car, I think just over 400 sold in the UK. In terms of performance vs. comfort and economy it's a good balance to my mind, can waft very well if you're not in the mood, and sharpens up nicely if you find a bit of open road. Always sounds great and the charger whine is only really present when you get well into the performance, again, subtle and well executed. Good review, thanks.

Ha ha yeah. My sv8 makes me want to just cruise. Another car of mine wants me to drive it fast. But the sv8 is faster and when I get the urge it responds so very, very well. Best of both worlds and is also an easy car for my young daughter to drive despite the excess power available which she will never use... I don't think 😊

I bought my SV8 in 2009. I'm still driving it now, 178,000 miles on the clock. My old job had me munching the motorway miles. It's fast, reliable and stealthy. Occasionally I think about replacing it, but then I drive it and all thoughts of that disappear. There's nothing out there that I want. It's given a few surprises to tail huggers on the motorway! One tip I'd give is to make sure the bushes are all done on a car this old (they'll all be 2008/2009). I got mine done last year and it feels like a brand new car.

I love this kind of sedans. This, the 55 amgs and a couple unassuming yet fast audis go in this category, because theyre all super understated and anyone who isnt into cars couldn't ever tell those cars were as fast as some really fast sports cars of their time. One of them is a dream car of mine that i plan on buying in the near future, the c219 cls55. Great video!

Yeah they’re great sleepers and have great used prices. I’ve gone back and forth on getting a CLS55 quite a few times myself, and the S6 V10 is definitely a hidden gem for that engine alone. The Lexus LS600h is another nice example

I am an older guy who likes the sleeper type cars with power but grace. So this does appeal. I recently bought an S type R but will look out for one of these at some point.

Excellent review, as always. Are the ownership costs more reasonable there than in the USA? Thanks.

How does the performace compare to an XFR? I use to own an XFR and would be interested to see how it compares.

About 5.1 seconds or so to 60, so half a second or so behind, and the longer the race the bigger the gap of course. In terms of feel this definitely feels like more of a pure torque surge, whereas the XFR hands over nicely from the low end torque surge to higher end horsepower

The front let's it down I reckon but from the side and the rear the sv8 looks great especially with the larger wheels which differentiates it from the regular models. The car has all the power you will ever need but unlike some high performance cars suits just cruising around at low speeds in comfort
