In this video, I attempt to break my old painting patters and habits, create new approach in how to use watercolor more freely and intuitively, rather than focus on copying the reference. This process is great to break art block and stop fearing the unpredictable nature of watercolor medium.
What I cover in this video:
- choosing the right reference and than abandoning it at some point
- which areas of the painting need more control and where you can let go
- how negative painting "cleans up" your mess
- ultimately, how to approach experimenting to bring back joy into your artistic process
______
Chapters:
00:00 Intro - overview
00:32 Where to find good reference photos
01:13 Sketching time
02:24 Preparing colors & watercolor setup
03:20 Painting time (first layer - skin & hands)
05:28 Wet in wet (watercolor freestyle begins)
06:39 Absolute mess = the ultimate "ugly" stage
08:04 Painting skin (second layer, shading)
10:18 Painting hair (freestyle)
11:25 Finishing a piece that has been stuck
11:37 Negative painting
12:49 Background (second layer = finish)
13:50 Corrections, trying not to overwork this thing
14:55 There goes the orange pencil all around the piece

Amazing! I love your portraits, I think it's difficult for an artist to notice their own progress but you definitely have plenty of it. While being a mom and teaching, that is a great challenge you take. But I understand the need to move forward and find something new to be curious about. I hope you always find those new things and enjoy your process. Amd why not, your results as well. Cheers ❤

Beautiful painting! I still struggle with working through the messy stage. This is inspiring to watch. The painting itself turned out powerful. I love it! 🌸

Thank you so much for this video! ❤ It's really incredible how your style evolved and diversified since your first videos! I love the "dry brush" technique in the hair and the contrast between the movement in the background and the peace of the face... There's so much to learn and to take inspiration from!

I think I’m on the same path as you are. I’m trying to let go of control and loosen up in my paintings. So far not much progress, but I’m getting there 😅 Love your portrait! I feel like in every painting there is a part when you think that it’s damaged beyond repair and then it all comes together in the last wash 😊

Jane, can you sketch from real life? I am sketching for the first time in years and thanks to you progressing with watercolor and I've never tried it before! I'm 43. That magic you feel when an image grabs you, I do the same thing but with real life portrait sketching. My goal is get better with my sketching and to help bring out that magic with watercolor. Love your humble approach and the mindset you have with your art. It's a beautiful thing.

You have a great point, I’d love to sketch more from real life but I honestly have very little opportunity. Besides my husband, nobody in my circle is patient enough to pose for me and I have a busy family life too, hard to arrange a calm painting session with another person. I usually work by myself in the studio during specific times, and work partly from photos (my own also, though, I have sometimes models sitting for a photo) and partly from imagination. But your comment is a great reminder to try to actively arrange this as a regular thing.

I just ask people if I can draw them, and people will usually want to, then there is this pressure and judgement which makes it hard but if you can channel it you can achieve amazing results. The 3 best sketchinges I ever did I nailed perfect line pretty much 1rst time, both sessions were when I just switched off and my hand just kind of did it. It usually takes a fair amount of time for not as good results. But I never would have experienced that with a photo I think, it was the magic of my subjects. Special people and our pet rotweilers with mother come to stay with us, and she bonded with her son and me towards the end of her life. And when I was just a young man at the start of my journey. I somehow captured Kiras essence. Very special and meaningful sketch. Very special place and time. Your sketching is amazing and at higher level than mine, I didn't mean to be critical, you are amazing to me. Art on jane

@@locust334 you are right about live sessions being a completely different type of inspiration and often a transformative experience. They should be a crutial part of artist training also. But I think the way anyone approaches their art is different, depends largely on their personality and what they wanna convey in their art, I don’t think there is right or wrong way to create - with or without references, it’s all equally important, is how I see it. But I’m so glad you shared this with me, you made me think about arranging a live session and explore this, many thanks ❤️🙏🏻

@JaneBeata I agree 100 percent Jane, there is no current agreed upon definition of what art is. Before that art was anything that required a skilled hand to complete, like bricklaying ect. I did kind of miss that in my response and I will try to keep that in mind going forward as well. I am so happy to share my experience with you, and you writing back to me put a big smile on my face. I have wanted to share that with you for a while but I was waiting for the right time if it came along. Thank you so much. I loved this video, I am currently sketching from photos as well. Your response just now is going to help my mindset going forward. And this videos gave me a spark that I needed to push on with my watercolor. I love youtube and channels like this
