I’m used to cook rice as well when me or my son are sick. It’s really good expecially for gut because of the starch. I’ ve learned it from my grandma, as well as you did 😊
When I feel a cold coming on, I make myself a simple chicken noodle soup (from stock cube) with lots of garlic, chilli and ginger. Also growing up in Poland, we had a lot of home remedies for a cold. One was hot milk with honey and garlic - not my favourite! Or onion syrup for cough - just sliced onion sprinkled with sugar and left until the juice run. We would also make rice porridge for upset stomach, with just water - so it frankly looked like wallpaper glue! And in Ireland where I live now, they recommend hot whisky for a cold - only for adults of course! Thank you again Miwa-san for an interesting video :) Marta

Oh my God! I remember one time when I was 14 and sick, my Irish step dad made me hot whiskey. it was the most disgusting thing and I was so appalled that he gave a KID alcohol. Whenever I retell the story he’s always like, “well you didn’t die so I guess it worked” 😭😭😭

The latte looks incredible. The perfect cosy drink. The weather is changing in the UK too. This means lots of stews. If I am sick I like mashed potato with cheese and breadcrumbs on the top. It’s not too heavy and tastes nice. When we have colds we drink hot water with honey and lemon (or whiskey, hot water and sugar for the grown ups before they go to bed at night). xx

Thank you for these recipes! I love the idea of using the used kombu. I never knew how to do it before, but now I'm definitely going to try it. I bought かつおみりん Katsuo Mirin Furikake (a sprinkle with sesame, bonito, sugar, salt, soy sauce, kelp and seaweed, which is designed to be sprinkled on fish and salad, for English speakers like me :) ). I remembered that you used something similar as a seasoning for onigiri, so a few days ago, I mixed it with some sushi rice, then added smoked salmon and piled them both on a seaweed square (I was too lazy to form it into a shape with the salmon inside). It was delicious!!

Just sounds good for cold winter nights. I am going to try the porridge too. Thank you. I am older and have to mother myself when sick. You gave me new skills. LOL! I have an old banana. This will be breakfast. If my kitties get nauseated I mix a bit of plain rice into their food. They like it. I might just have a bowl of rice with a bit of butter and salt. Or I want a hot soup. These recipes are all of these. I just recieved some Japanese rice that I ordered. I plan to cook 2 cups and refrigerate later for fried rice, and other things. I can keep some out and add more water for porridge. This video is wonderful.

It's been a year since the ultimate breakfast for me (someone who skips it in favor of a bucket of cappuccino) is Korean JatJuk-like porridge: made of rice partly blended with cashews* and salt. And - oh my chopsticks! - i could start every day like this to the rest of my life😄 If feelling fancy, [wakame + roasted sesame seeds] or [black sesame paste + gimjaban] or even various types furikake will do as toppings:] *of course original recipe calls for pine nuts, however, as far as i tried: ✔cashews, macadamia, brazil nuts ⛔walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachios

I also go for ginger tea when I feel like I might be getting a cold, but I don't add anything. In case I do get sick it's just instant meals where you only add boiling water because I don't have the energy to stand in the kitchen, even if it's just a cold, I usually feel SO dead. Luckily, that doesn't happen too often, 2019 was the last time I fell really sick, I think.

Comfort food is so culturally based, depends on what you grow up with... What I think of is: For upset stomach: toast For soar throat: hot tea with lemon and honey For a cold: fresh fruit like apples, oranges, pomegranate, blueberries, etc.
