I remember an episode of Maury where a 13-year-old pregnant girl came on the show, and the audience booed her as she came on stage. I felt bad because she actually seemed really worried about her situation and it didn’t help that she was being treated like that. It isn’t ideal that a 13-year-old is pregnant, but what’s done is done.

As someone who has been in the audience for approx 15+ episodes & kept going back throughout college for shits & giggles, I can confirm that the producers definitely tell us when & how to react during key moments of each family’s stories. The more dramatic you react, the greater chance you’ll be shown reacting on TV, and since obviously we want to be on TV, many of us do our best job going over the top. Now consider that being on the show cost us literally nothing (they provide a free shuttle bus to Connecticut from Midtown NYC), this was an easy & entertaining way for anyone to be part of trash TV at the expense of a weekday morning. Good times.

I didn't get the impression that Jarvis really _disagreed_ with her, beyond the idea of someone yelling "I'm the best thing that ever happened to him" sounding very self-centred. Regardless, I think that if the clips are emblematic of all the info actually in the episode, it feels like all the attention was on the cheating accusations and not on Shavon's relationship with DJ, like that simply didn't get explored enough. She accused him of not taking care of the kids enough and there was the weird thing she said about "not being able to leave him" (which sounds like some deeper emotional/mental health issue) but this gets sidetracked because it's just two of the many things she says and we don't hear DJ respond to them.

I recently read an AITA post on Reddit about how a guy asked his wife for a paternity test not because he thought she cheated, but because he couldn’t keep deflecting his wife’s questions on why he doesn’t help with their new born. She saw right through him and left his ass after the paternity test (he was the bio father ofc). Dude could not understand why she wanted to leave, he even forced her to listen the podcasts he listens to rationalize this behavior omg. Men like that don’t want to be proper fathers, they just want a “legacy” and leave the hard work to women. I hope this woman saw the light too and left his ass.

I once tried to get on Judge Judy, so I have an answer to your question of why you would use a program like this to "solve your problem": It's because all three of the "beefing" people on the show get an appearance fee just for showing up, and they probably get more if the episode they were in actually airs on TV. So probably none of those people actually hate each other, they're putting on a show for Maury.

It doesn't matter how legit it is. The slots these shows typically fill are within the congress-signed mandate from the late 90s. That mandate requires a certain percent of educational shows during that time, because those slots were previously cartoon heavy. This all began with Mr. Rogers, and snowballed into education vs cartoon issues in the 1990s. What matters is: the show has to have educational moments, and of course, people will view it $. Now, there is Paternity Court.

It wasn’t always just paternity drama. I remember there were a few episodes of Maury when I was younger where they would have a runway set up and have women walk down it (usually in a swimsuit or something revealing). After they were done it was the audiences job to guess wether or not the woman had been born male or female. Maury would give the big reveal usually to screams and grossed out faces from the audience. Even as a kid I felt really sad for these women, and didn’t understand why it even mattered. My sister loved watching this show after school and I just wanted to watch Spongebob to be honest.

god that is so transphobic and dehumanizing. i cant imagine why those poor women agreed to it except maybe if they offered them a ridiculous amount of pay for it. not that public television has gotten much more inclusive of trans people, but rewatching old television really highlights just how often trans people were seen as a joke or a gross-out moment. it’s awful.
@Caldella

I remember seeing those episodes and, even when I was too young to really understand, I could feel it was really wrong. Just pure exploitation. The production would make sure the guys in the audience were the loudest people shouting guesses. The trans people were gawked at, and it was treated like a straight guy finding one hot was hilariously disgusting. The show would drum one audience member to be 'convinced' one of the cis women was born male and have him loudly call her a man all the way until the 'reveal' of the truth. Everyone was treated rubbish like some Victorian era sideshow. It was gross.

What's the worst is when the dad doesn't wanna be a dad and is like adamant that the kid isn't his and then it turns out to be and he makes a big show of being angry and upset that he's officially a dad. Like imagine how those kids grew up? Like...imagine having video evidence of your bio dad saying he doesn't want anything to do with you. Even worse is sometimes the kids are like....not babies. Sometimes they are old enough to remember everything. Which is so fucked

Sometimes you have to wonder what happens after the show. Does the father then have financial problems as of result of the kid and that he might be fired from his job because he was humiliated on live television? That expectation that men just sleep around that’s what they do, she slept around so yeah I slept with her, but so did everyone else so the baby isn’t mine. And I watched this show for a solid 15 years, back in the day, and even though I had these opinions at the time, I still watched it. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

As someone who's worked on a show with a live audience, they get all the reactions before the acts even happen. They have someone come in, tell the audience what to do so they can get clean takes, and then start filming the actual show. They'll still react during the actual show, but if it's not enough drama, they'll add in shots from pre-show to make it seem better. One of our episodes was actually completely shot without an audience and we just put in shots of the audience from previous episodes.

Fun fact: lie detector tests can't be used as be as evidence, they're literally inadmissible in court because they're typically inaccurate (I learned this in my criminal justice class). As someone with ADHD and general anxiety disorder I would immediately fail even if everything I say is completely true because I fidget, have a stutter when I'm nervous, have to think about things and struggle with eye contact when I'm not familiar with the person. My grandfather was always watching Arab dramas and so I would sit in their living room listening to them while I played with a couple stuffed animals they had for me. He would give me cookies and my own cup of coffee and we would sit together (which probably wasn't the best since Arab coffee is super caffeinated). I don't think Jarvis realized how poor some of the people on this show are. A lot of them do not have 200 for a dna test and even if they did it is totally worth it to them to get one for free along with a 3 night stay in a hotel and travel fees taken care of. Plus you get to watch a whole crowd of people boo your ex boyfriend.

Oh man, I’m excited for this video haha. I’m almost 40 and remember Maury before he turned into paternity test Maury. When I was 18 my boyfriend and his roommates got us free tickets to be in the audience. Now he was still doing his old regular content and had done a few paternity episodes but not many yet. But after the first segment they said they’re going to do a paternity segment. Man oh man did we get excited lol. Every episode we had seen the audience always sided with the mom, and it seemed like that’s what was happening to this episode. So every single one, 3 total, we screamed and clapped sooooo loud “he’s not the daddy! Ain’t no way!!” When it was clearly his for all 3 cases lol. It was the stupidest thing and one couple even fought. This hadn’t happened before on Maury, well not like the paternity episodes lately…. This woman chased after the baby daddy, fell, busted the railing, a stair. It was drama. And my friends are still yelling how he’s not the dad, the test is a lie lol. We all took it as a big joke. I truly have no idea how Maury was able to make that many episodes, and then it’s all he does, and still does! 20 years back and Maury hasn’t aged physically and his show hasnt changed too much either I guess. Should I be thankful for his stability in my life? Or horrified this is still on tv?

There used to be a very similar show over here in the UK called Jeremy Kyle. It got ripped off the air a couple years ago because one of the people that had been on it committed suicide as a result of what happened on the show. These shows are disgusting and exploitative and they destroy lives in the name of "entertainment".

Right although these shows are kind of funny they do more harm than good. In the US there was a show called Jenny Jones and there was an episode about a surprise gay lover and due to the dude being surprised getting embarrassed he murdered the dude who said he liked him and it sort of led to the show ending. He was told it was a girl not a guy. Not to mention Maury sort of promotes harmful stereotypes about black women since at least 80% percent of the show is based on them coming on and being loud and crazy and then the dude they’re accusing doesn’t even end up being the father.

@@deadchannel3610 I was just going to mention the Jenny Jones Show murder. And I agree about the stereotypes of black women. I remember this one black woman who was a repeat guest on Maury. She went on the first time to prove this guy was her baby’s father. He wasn’t. She came back to the show saying another dude had to be the kid’s father. He wasn’t. Then she came back again, because she was 100% sure that this man was the father. He wasn’t…You get the idea. I don’t remember how many times she was on the show or how many potential fathers were tested, but it was pretty extreme. When I saw the episode that I watched, it had a recap of all of her other episodes, and the guy they tested was, once again, not the father. Every time, she would cry so loudly-maybe cry isn’t the right word-she would wail and run around the entire studio dramatically (in addition to the reaction in that episode, they showed clips of her reactions from previous episodes). I think at the end of the episode I saw, once she had calmed down (but was crying silently), Maury said something like, “But we will keep searching.” It was almost like she needed a detective, because she had no clue who else she had slept with. The more I think about it, the more I think this woman’s saga was scripted. The woman was waaaaaaay overdramatic. If I’m wrong, and it was true, that woman desperately needed a psychiatric evaluation, not more exploitation. I don’t know if the “mystery” was ever solved. In addition to the black women stereotype, there’s the absent black father stereotype that Jarvis talked about. And if Maury’s guests aren’t black, then they’re the “white trash,” “trailer trash,” “redneck,” etc. stereotype.

The thing that has always bothered me about these shows using these tests is that lie detector tests are wildly inaccurate, and DNA tests range from pretty accurate to not even remotely accurate depending on the lab, the money you spend, etc. I can't imagine daytime shows like this are exactly splurging on high quality tests. So I guess my question is: how often do these shows ruin lives because they present all this as 100% factual proof. I guess it probably depends on if any of it is real or not, haha.

Lie detection IS accurate. However, to make it such it requires a specialist to check records. Also whole 'lie detection' takes a few hours of talking, with only short time spent on actually aking important questions. The rest is to make sure that person adapts to new situation, shows how their body normally reacts etc., then interpreting the results takes a while. I don't think they would go with such a hassle for just a show.

I’ve actually been to a show taping. The audience is directed on how to react and when. That’s why they may seem so rehearsed. The production team lets you know that the more you react, the more screen time you get. Also, many people take the paternity test on the show because they offer free counseling afterwards.
