Great video and without doubt the most dangerous race I have taken part in, one of the Danish cyclists in my category was in a coma for 5 days and over 150 cyclists ended up in hospital. The UCI and organisers should be ashamed having such an important race on narrow roads with over 2000 cyclists. Hope all the cyclists who needed treatment are back on their bikes.

@ you were in the best group as first off it was carnage behind due to the large numbers of cyclists in narrow roads and with about 35km to the finish you had all categories coming together. The big problem was narrow roads with too many cyclists and a lack of medical support due to the above.
@hermantenkate8452Ай бұрын
@@TheMurciaCyclist-bk7jo Small roads aren't the problem, they actually help narrow the bunch down. Wider roads make bigger groups and higher speeds, so the consequences of these crashes are even gonna be worse. Crashes are always gonna be implicit, because the average amateur level rises A LOT quicker than the skill level of the average amateur (I even dare to say it gets worse). They should just make the age groups smaller (lower % qualifies) and leave bigger gaps between the races. And host an event over 2 days, just like they do with gravel worlds.
@jakubkollar1299Ай бұрын
I was in M 19-34 and it was a carnage. It felt more like Normandy invasion than a proper race. Extremely dangerous, but I made it without a scratch. I saw 8 brutal crashes with my own eyes and one guy crashed in a traffic sign in the last couple of km. The first 20 and last 20 km were more about surviving than racing. Great video, Jasper!

Absolutely amazing video Jasper, I loved it. You were in crazy good shape that day ! For the ''story'', I actually raced a few times with the guy who won. While he is a nice guy... he was suspended for a few years for doping from pro cycling. And instead of racing with the highest amateur level (maybe he's banned though?), he goes in smaller amateur leagues and wins ALL the races. Super annoying for the rest of us ... Oh, and the guy who finished fourth was Belgian Amateur champion (top category for non pros) in 2023, it says a lot about the level of the race ! Anyway, I am really glad I did not compete : as others, I have heard that there was sooooo MANY crashes in that race, and the category mess shows so much how UCI think sooooooo lowly of Gran Fondo riders, all they care about is the money. Totally shameful to have races were the faster categories end up lapping the slower categories.Total madness. But welll .....

Good question, I don’t know. I may have been able to keep a better position on some of the climbs to maintain a better overview of the riders and if I had the legs go with the guys that attacked. For what it's worth, I rode in the Gran Fondo World Championships last year in Scotland. There, they started the age groups the same way - with a few minutes gap - but the older age groups did a slightly different shorter course so the younger age groups never needed to overtake them. Also, it was on mostly country roads, so there were no problems with street furniture. There was still a lot of overtaking slower riders from the younger groups in front, but we never had big groups overtaking other big groups. It was much, much safer than Åalborg.

Leuke video! Op 18:18 zie je Bjorn De Decker (de latere winnaar) demarreren. Was rond km70.

@@jasperverkuijlbtw. He is an elite level amateur like yourself. I have no idea how can you manage work, racing and family on a daily basis. I would burn out in one month.

@@fpeter01 40kph is nothing in a peloton...... it was a slow race. My avg power was lower than hard 5h races..

Wow the speed difference is huge! Scary stuff for the slower riders/category. Thanks for this great video. Seeya. Erik

It was good to be back in orange. I’ve actually done many races in orange back in my bmx career. Looooong time ago 😅

Doesnt sound like any amateur can just apply and compete? What did you have to do to wven be able to qualify for competing?
@jasperverkuijlАй бұрын
You need to finish top 25% at a UCI qualifier event. Which is fairly easy to do (imo). I think they should narrow this down to maybe 10%…. But yeah, than the event will get smaller and I guess less interesting to organize..🤨

Ha! saw a guy I know in the 1st 5mins. Yeah that's what my some guys I know who did it said. They said it was completely crazy and crashes everywhere and people riding like maniacs. They made it to the finishing sprint in the main group but a few picked staying safe rather than risking a crash and were just happy to finish in one piece. One guy I know got a top 10 in another category with a completely buckled rubbing front wheel after an early crash! No idea how he rode it to the finish...
