Wow this hit close to home. Literally a few days ago my mom yelled my name around 6 am. It managed to barely wake me up. I was going to ignore it and go back to sleep, but i went downstairs anyways. As i was going downstairs i found my mom lying on the floor barely able to speak or move. I managed to treat her and give her help. Shes fine now, it was probably caused by low blood pressure I wonder how things would’ve gone if i chose to sleep

Went on a night out few years back. Mom urged me to not stay out overnight, atleast not late. On taxi back all I could think was: just go home, just go home. So I did. Woke up to mom not being able to breathe and losing conciousness. Neighbour drove us to hospital. Had to carry her myself from entrance to ER. In the end her blood sugar dropped too low from alchohol withdrawal and we made it. "Just a moment longer and it would've been too late" Some luck for us to come at right moment, maybe not so much luck.

His mother calling his name toward the end is a profound mystery which is unaddressed. She might have been calling him to talk as usual, or calling for him to help with whatever it was that caused her death; or perhaps her calling was his hallucination on the acid [she was already dead]. This is one of those stories that lives right on the edge of tragedy and comedy. It could be told with almost all the same scenes and word choices as a tragedy, the difference is his attitude. Amazing. [edited for clarity]

The last interaction I had with her I was making a sandwich and she asked me to leave the stuff out and I made my sandwich real fast so I wouldn't have to put the stuff away and she called me a Jew and laughed. The peak of this story hits so hard and blunt that you forget what he was talking about before, and then he does the callback to the setup, which closes the loop. This is perfect structure, and he knows that, and he knows we know. So just in case we think it's all contrived, he says, "you think I'm fkn kidding you? That was my first thought" etc. And we realize he's not kidding. He's just shown us something about himself that most of us would hide, all the time, even from ourselves, let alone a room full of strangers. And there's a point to the story, and speaking for myself, I'll never forget it. The perfect structure is craft, and the emotional courage makes it art. What a master storyteller. I was always too chicken to do it like that.

This story reminds me of a similar one from Saving Private Ryan. Where the soldiers are in a church at night getting a respite from the war. One of the soldiers begins confessing: "Sometimes my mom would come home early. But I would pretend to be asleep. She'd stand in the doorway looking at me, but I'd just keep my eyes shut. But I knew she just wanted to find out about my day. That she came home early just to talk to me. But I still wouldn't move, I'd still pretend to be asleep. ...I don't know why I did that." THE UNIVERSE IS VAST, AND WE ARE SO SMALL. THE ONLY THING WE CAN TRULY CONTROL IS WHETHER WE ARE GOOD... OR EVIL.

AbsofuckingLUTELY agree with this! There's obviously the type of comedy that doesn't rely on that darkness....but the comedy I enjoy the most, does. What's greater than being able to LAUGH...That physical manifestation of a spilling-over, irreverent joy in the face of the ridiculousness of BEING...to be able to laugh at the things that can just as easily cause you pain? You make friends, you kinda TAME the things that might otherwise do you in, and suddenly you're able to extract some measure of good from EVERYTHING in life, not just the sweet parts. How valuable is that??

He's the last of a dying breed and this hypersensitive era of political correctness is only thinning out the heard to near extinction... We must appreciate every moment we've had and be thankful for however many more the future has for us... because there will come a time that his outlook on life and unique way of delivering it, will be extinct and labeled as a lost art... N unfortunately, most people won't realize how much they appreciate it, untill it's gone... I hope Joey gets as many of his flowers he possibly can b4 he transitions, cause people like him are constantly overlooked & underappreciated until it's too late, when they really deserve to live a long & rewarding life... One that allows them to motivate & inspire others with a troubled past, by being proof that anyone can learn from their mistakes and make a positive change... There's alot of troubled people in the world who feel completely alone and crazy, that actually find comfort when they hear someone like Joey talk, because they find out they're not the only one who thinks the way they do and that it's possible to have that state of mind along with a troubled past and still make a change for the better... Uncle Joey is like a councilor for a those at the very bottom, who delivers his unqiue message through laughter, but in all actuality he's doing God's work as a comfort provider, Even moreso in these uncertain times.... God bless you Uncle Joey, I hope you understand how much you mean to alot of us and I hope you get as many of your flowers as you possibly can b4 you leave this madhouse and start the next level of your eternal journey...
