I was one of those intelligent people who got duped by Wheat Belly, then something clicked. I remember reading on the Wheat Belly page that some people were not shedding the weight, and Dr. Davis said, if you find that your weight isn't going down, cut the dairy out of your diet too. (What the???) I came across Medical Medium, Forks Over Knives, and other plant-based diets, and suddenly realised it was all wrong. How could I have been so stupid - why would eating high fat, restricting fruits and vegetables, heal your body? It all makes sense now. I am so glad I found Dr. McDougall.
@markdotcomau7 жыл бұрын
Not stupid at all, you're learning like the rest of us. I've just started on a plant based diet myself and also wonder why I didn't know about this before as it's so simple, but like most people I was hooked on meat and dairy and believed what the various industries told me...We all live and learn and will now hopefully live a longer and happier life :)
@JCKay7 жыл бұрын
markdotcomau well guess what? All those years and years of trying to be low carb and essentially high fat to control my blood sugars and weight did nothing for me (I always had elevated liver functions, even though I do not drink alcohol, so basically it was fatty liver. I also had insulin resistance and was on diabetic medication for it and PCOS). So, yesterday I got my new blood test results back, and after being plant based now for a year, my insulin resistance is GONE, I'm not on any meds, and for the first time in over 15 years, my liver functions are perfect!! The doctor was so pleased and proud, and he said it was my plant based diet that did this and reversed my fatty liver disease! Even when I lost a lot of weight in my 20s on a low carb diet, my liver functions were still elevated! I'm no where near my ideal weight now, but the blood tests show better health! Incredible.

This whole confusion about low carb or high carb gets resolved for me by looking at the age of the people advocating these various positions. In 2 days I will be 56, I don’t look to some younger whipper snappers like Daniel Vitalis or David Wolfe to tell me how to achieve longevity and health. I look to studies and I look for people older than me who appear to be functioning well. Caldwell Esselstyn is near 80 and has the studies to show that what he is advocating works. McDougall is 67 and for his age looks very good as well and is pretty much advocating the same thing. I work at a place, The Omega Institute, where I see zillions of young healthy people eating any number of different ways all the way up to their late 40’s. Once one hits 50 or so problems start to rear their heads unless one has incredible genetics. I want to see Perlmutter and Grain Belly doctors with all the people they put on their plan who 5 and 10 and 20 years later are free of cardiovascular disease.Show me their studies and research. Ain’t gonna happen

dr mcdougall is a lovely man and has made such a positive impact on the world with his ideas and his nice simple diet. While I've realized after 2 plus years on the McD plan that perhaps his diet is not the highest level of nutritional excellence, its a GREAT way to get started on vegan diet. Now I aim to consume a lot more greens, beans, raw, make green smoothies and even a few supplements and I feel even better, but if not for McD, I never would have gone plant based so I am always indebted to McDougall for his simple, clear message

Had to comment since you had the same experience that I did. Even the timing is in sync. His diet certainly removes all the bad stuff - meat, dairy, sugar and heavily processed foods. Not quite sure why he hasn't emphasized the high antioxidant food. One thought I have had is that He wants people to eat food that is higher calorie content in order to feed a growing world population.

I am on board and would really appreciate having subtitles for non-English speaking folks outside of the US. Attaching email response sent re: this video: One suggestion: I just played the video through KZbin and was able to generate English subtitles. I don't need them, but here in Brazil where I spend most of the year I have spoken to a lot of people here and they are in need of these videos with subtitles for greater understanding of plant-based diets. Veganism is increasing here, but plant-based diets are 99.99% unknown. For many, the English subtitles will not help them, but having subtitles available in Spanish will facilitate understanding for most Brazilians who can easily read and understand Spanish, a first cousin of Portuguese. As mentioned, the great majority of people here are unaware of the benefits of plant-based nutrition and I for one would be thankful and as a means of sharing the knowledge. Thank you for your consideration,

My path to veganism was a bit different. I became interested in the idea of becoming a vegetarian when for the first time as a child I witnessed how meat was produced. At that time, I expressed to my family that I was interested in eating vegetarian. My parents and siblings seemed to have a laugh at that idea because "everyone" knows we need meat, eggs, and dairy for optimal health. As I became older and was purchasing my own food, I realized that I could become a vegetarian if I wanted to. I told myself that I'd eat vegetarian if a vegetarian diet could be at least as healthy as someone who included meat in their diet. My research led me to conclude that a heath conscious vegetarian diet is superior to a health conscious one that includes meat. During my research I also learned about how vegan diets demand less of the environment. After about 6 months of eating an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet, I switched to a vegan diet. I have no problem with people who are interested in veganism only for health reasons. What bothers me is that there are some people who eat a vegan diet exclusively for health reasons and are contemptuous towards ethical vegans. They seem to think that if someone wishes to withdraw support from an industry that abuses animals and the environment then that person has no ability to objectively compare the health aspects of a vegan diet with a diet that includes animal products. To me this would be similar to assuming that if someone enjoys going for bike rides purely for pleasure, the cyclist can't objectively compare the health benefits of cardiovascular exercise with living a sedentary lifestyle. It is unfortunate that people who follow a vegan diet for health reasons only assume that those who have several reasons for following the diet (of which health is one) are incapable of thinking critically about how a diet affects health.

I know that those things could be considered as somewhat extreme for them but the power they hold is amazing. I know someone who has a fasting center and that people responded very well to parkinsons by fasting, he has never fasted anyone with alzeimers. But he personally believes that given the right conditions, there are almost no conditions that the body cannot heal.

doesn't it have to do with the fat ratios (Omega3:6), as well? Grains tend to have a lot of 6...

What are the healthiest starches? I'm pretty sure sweet potatoes fall under this category but is there any actual data on that?

I heard you can live of by only eating sweet potato and broccoli. I would say any starchy plant is healthy. I don't eat potatoes because they are heavy spray from I heard so I am going to try to get organic potatoes. I still eat sweet potato once in a while.

William Gabbert It was organic bread and beer, full of vitamins, enzymes, minerals. One girl used to live in the country side, she is in poor family, she has been eating brown rice and home made pickles every day. One day she moved to the City (Tokyo) she always wants to eat White rice and processed food. 6 months later, she started fainting, doctor found she was lack of minerals and vitamins. So you can not compare food in centuries ago and now.

But it says on McDougall's website: "Fruits - because they are high in simple sugars - should generally be limited to 3 servings a day as they’re tasty and easy to over-consume. The sugar in fruit is fructose which, for some, causes triglycerides and cholesterol to rise. People with these concerns should limit fruits even more." Is fruit good or not?

Fruit is healthy but if you have a very sick liver limiting fruits to 2-3 servings a day might be a good idea. Some fruits like apples have a high ratio of fructose while bananas are on the lower end.

I was a little put off by the way he responded to the question about Lyme disease and the question about stevia. It was almost as if he was afraid to answer. Why would that be?

Please explain why those who claim that when they eat wheat like pasta and bread they feel bloated.

I have that effect when I eat some bread or some pasta. Maybe there is something in that particular bread or that particular pasta that makes it or the combination of the foods you take with it.

choline is present in most foods .. many cereals/ breads/veggies comparative with meat..depending upon portion size of meat serving....why do you only put emphasis that this is in meat and is unhealthy? Can you please clarify for me Dr McDougal?
