I didn't watch Joker 2, but I thought the first one was pretty interesting. I'm finding a lot of my film nerd friends are very split on the first movie. I didn't pay much attention to all of the controversy surrounding it and I'm not a psychologist, but the themes surrounding mental health in society were interesting. The way that the viewer doesn't really know if a certain character is good or bad, lying or honest, and real or imaginary seemed to properly reflect the state of mind of a mentally ill man. But I'm noticing a lot of people saying they didn't enjoy the movie. Some point to the superhero genre and say, "if you take out the Joker, you just have another Taxi Driver type of movie," which is a good point because I'm not a big DC guy, but doesn't totally compel me. Others criticize the obscurity of the theme itself, which I don't really understand. I know everyone will have their own experience with a movie, but it just baffles me how torn people seem to be about the story. I definitely had a few minor nitpicks, but I was pretty intrigued by the themes at play. I would love to see a video where you break it down and discuss why you didn't like it because I appreciate your point of view on movies.

This movie took a risk. It was stated from the get go that this movie was going to be a musical and there was so many mixed reactions, even for myself, because, I loved the first one and I was like how the hell are they going to make it a continuation through musical elements? And while I know everyone hated this movie, I loved it. The musical elements made perfect sense for Arthur Fleck's character, the man behind the mask. All he had in life really was music and dance, it was the only thing that brought him any joy. Touching into that while showing how he is slowly losing his mind, but not in an insanity way, in a desperate cry for help way, was perfect. The story was so haunting to watch. It was campy, it was so fun but it was so depressing. Maybe it wasn't a good Joker movie, but it was an excellent Arthur Fleck movie, and if you watch the movies, then you would know that's all he really ever wanted to be. Yes, there were some pacing issues and there were some plotholes which why it's not a perfect movie for me but, yeah I give it a solid 8.

I appreciated what the first movie wanted to say, even if I wasn’t a fan of this adaptation of the character. But in retrospective, a lot of the respect I had for the first film is gone, and I can’t shake the feeling that it would’ve been an infinitely better film if it had nothing to do with the joker. (Yes, I know it’s basically king of comedy, but at that point you could’ve just made it a modern remake of that film or something)

Nah, because the first movie felt like a pointless, randomly thrown together ride and sometimes, just sometimes, you catch sight of an awesome scene and think "dang that's good" and then you continue the pointless ride, waiting for another good part to show up. It was the parts of its sum that made it good, not the sum of its parts. Neither this new movies' parts nor sum could save it. This was just a boring, pointless, randomly thrown together ride all the way through, and you don't get a single worthwhile or even accidentally good scene. A masterpiece in the mundane.
