My friend's dad was our little league coach and we would Destroy most teams. The opposing coaches would get mad and yell for him to not pile on runs. The irony is there was a literal “unwritten rule” drama being 6 runs up not even that long ago. Pile on my hitting friends. Always pile on. Because even though it’s rare it can happen. Because the pitchers never feel bad being up 15-2 and lob you center cut meat cakes. Pitchers always try to get outs so hitters should always try for hits. By any means necessary.

One thing I've always loved about baseball compared to other sports is the fact that there is no clock to run out. No matter how far ahead a team is they still need to get 27 outs to win, can't just sit back and play the clock.

IMO the only “unwritten” rules when leading by a large amount that made any sense were stuff that could cause injury. Like “don’t slide into second base hard if you’re up by eight runs”. “Don’t run over the catcher if the game is practically over” since that stuff isn’t allowed anymore anyways regardless of the score, it’s now moot.

This is one thing I love about baseball over basically any other sport in America, and I'll admit baseball is toward the bottom of my list for favorite sports to watch. The game is not over until it's over. In football, basketball, soccer, even in racing, if there's a blowout there's a gradual change of the comeback being "possible there's still hope", "okay let's get the comeback going now or never", and eventually it's down to "yeah it'll take a miracle" and finally there's a point where it's literally impossible to win. Not in baseball. The game is never over until there's 3 outs in the bottom of the 9th. There's always a chance.

It just hurts so bad that they had such ridiculously stacked teams and they just seemed to go from fire to ice against the Cardinals, Giants and Red Sox. Now back to the old ways, not as bad, but after Mr. Illitch died and his kids took over, the Tigers AND Wings went from elite teams winning Pennants and Stanley Cups, to "boy, that'd be amazing if they made the playoffs this year." They couldn't even keep Datsyuk, the most insane puck handler and two way forward I've probably ever watched, from running back to Russia, of all places, to continue his career. Sad.

This is the type of game where the handwriting was then, and hopefully will be now, on the wall. 1969, the same first week on May, POSSIBLY the exact calendar day, the Mets come from 7 runs down vrs the Henry Arton-led Braves . The rally begins with of all things, a third-strike passed ball to Amos Otis . About 45 minutes later, the Mets set their record ( at that time) for most runs in an inning, and beat the Braves 7-6, or 8-7.(somebody help me remember). Alot like the game 3 weeks ago when St. Louis coughs up 5 unearned runs with 2 outside. Back in 1969, my memory tells me that down 6-1 in the 5th 3 weeks after they trade for him, Donn Clendenon hits a 3-run homer into the right field bullpen in I think still Forbes Field. I remember it like that.To sum it up, both years I mention 1969, and 2015 were great years

With the expanded playoffs and four, possibly five, NL teams that could lose 100 games, it is hard to believe they will not at least get a wild card. But they have severe weaknesses in defense, pitching and not a lot of hitting outside the big four.
