Do you have to do any bios update before adding new cpu? Or is that dependent on how new the motherboard is? I have the MSI MPG B550 ATX. Or it is just plug and go?

It is dependent on the build date of the motherboard. I believe any motherboard built after 2021 should already support the 5000 cpus without another update but I'm not 100% sure

Well it wouldn't hurt to update your bios either way

I went from a 3900xt to the 5950x. I don't think there's anything you need to do on your end since you're already running a 5000 series cpu

After your upgrade to a new cpu, does one have to reset the CMOS? What are the proper steps?

You shouldn't need to, unless you had your previous cpu overclocked or something. the BIOS as long as it supports your cpu will automatically recognize it. On mine I had to update BIOS.

im getting a bad bottle neck and wanna upgrade from a 5900x to a 5950x and my rooommate who has a 3800x will take my 5900x good way to go if you ask me, i have a MSI X570

Just make sure your roommate's bios is up to date before he swaps cpus!

Sorry I've come late to the party on CPU upgrades, I note what you have said above about there being a bottle neck on your 5900. Did this get resolved when you installed the 5950X? I want to do the upgrade purely for gaming and I've read that the 5900 is preferable than the 5950X as the latter CPU is overkill... Your thoughts?

For gaming I agree the 5950x can be overkill depending on your setup.

I mean most am4 coolers mount the same way or in a similar fashion. Can't show you different ones since that's what I got 🥺
