Grafting Fruit Trees | Changing varieties in Evergreen Fruit Trees | An example using Loquat Trees

How to change varieties by Grafting in Evergreen Fruit Trees. The example shows a Loquat but the grafting techniques applied in the video can be used on most evergreen fruit trees to change varieties. Loquat is an excellent evergreen fruit tree that has hundreds of different cultivars. If the one you bought is not very good and you already have an established tree, you can change the cultivar by grafting a new variety. You justa have to follow a few simple steps detailed in this video. The best cultivars of Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) have a very sweet and slightly acidic fruit of excellent quality. The flavor is very good and quite peculiar - like a strange mix of mango, citrus and peach. Even if you are on a zone that it’s not suited for this fruit tree (it flowers and develops its fruit in the winter), it’s such a beautiful tree that often is cultivated by is ornamental value alone.

It can be air layered although is not one of the easiest to accept it. Use young, robust branches and be prepared to wait several months for roots to develop, depending on your climate and time of year.

I'm told it is possible to graft loquat onto pear and medlar, have you tried it and were you successful?

You will have some success but there is a chance of incompatibility or some grafts might produce weak graft unions that can brake after a few years. I prefer to graft loquat on loquat or quince for better results.

Loquat is evergreen and the rootstock I want to use (quince, Cydonia oblonga) is deciduous. My only known supplier of loquat scions seems to want to ship them now (Nov. in the northern hemisphere). Will the union heel if the rootstock is dormant?

Thank you, I grafted my loqout and now seeing some small new growth after three weeks. How much longer should I leave the tin foil covering graft?

As soon as there is signs of growth from the graft you should open the tin foil so it can get sunlight. If its too hot, I sometimes leave it so the sunlight is indirect (like an umbrella), protecting the new leaves from excessive heat, for a while.

Eu prefiro enxertar as Nespereiras no início da Primavera. Sendo uma planta de folha persistente podemos enxertar noutras épocas do ano mas, se a metereologia não ajudar (muito calor ou muito frio, por exemplo), o enxerto tem menos hipótese de ter sucesso.

@@JSacaduraNunca enxertei Nespereiras, mas vou experimentar. De todas as árvores que tenho enxertado a árvore com menos sucesso que tenho tido são os Diospereiros, taxa de sucesso de 1 a 2 para 10. Uso normalmente a técnica de enxertia de garfo. Tem alguma sugestão para este tipo de árvore e que a taxa de sucesso seja superior á técnica de garfo?

Most grafts that are done in the early spring take around 2 to 4 weeks to break bud, depending on the fruit type grafted. If the grafts are done earlier and the trees are still dormant it can take a bit longer.

In loquats its best to use the tips of one year branches. In other fruit trees, I usually avoid the tip and go for the mid section of a young branch.

Hola tino. También se puede injertar el níspero en membrillo ya que ambos pertenecen a la familia de las Rosáceas, por eso son compatibles. El níspero del ultimo injerto del vídeo está en membrillero. Tiene la ventaja que el árbol injertado costumbra empezar a producir con menos años de desarrollo, por eso se hace bastante. Como desventaja los nísperos injertados en membrillero suelen vivir menos (por los 15-20 años, en vez de los más de 30 años que puede vivir un níspero). Saludos y Feliz Navidad.

Se puede hacer un acodo aéreo, que es la opción más segura y rápida para obtener un níspero idéntico al del árbol madre, que va a crecer en sus proprias raíces. Se pueden también obtener patrones para injertar a partir de semillas de nísperos plantadas (que ha veces pueden producir buenas variedades, de acuerdo con la lotería genética de su polinización), o se retiran brotes de raíz (retoños) de arboles ya instalados. Hi. I prefer to graft in early spring (around March, over here), so graft have time to heal before having to face harsh weather. But, being an evergreen you pretty much can graft them all year round. Those where grafted in the autumn.

I grafted those trees in late spring after fruit harvest, but you can graft them in late summer or in the fall. Just avoid winter because of the cold weather.

Loquats are evergeen plants. Although the best time to graft them is April-May you can graft in July as long as you protect the grafts from the sun to avoid dehydration. Bud grafting (eye grafting) is not very successful with this fruit type. I prefer whip and tongue or lateral bark grafting.

Quinces, Medlars, Hawthorns and Loquats are usually compatible and be grafted to each other. Nevertheless, Loquats are usually grafted to Quince as the resulting tree bears fruit earlier and doesn't grow as much (as a dwarfing effect), but you rarely graft Quince into Loquats.

Loquat is very often grafted on Quince. Its compatible, makes a smaller adult tree and anticipates producción. The only downside is that it tends to reduce longevity a bit (but still quite acceptable considering the advantages).
