@@TwelvetreeZ I also agree, I think the trope that the popular kids basically rule the school and everyone else bows down before them is extremely over played. You're right no one in high school acts like this. Honestly everyone considers the losers to be the people who are genuine assholes and not the "nerds/weird kids". Let's not forget that these movies encourage some crazy internalized misogyny in their female viewership. Like, how many of us went through that, "All girly things are rubbish, I'm not shallow like that, I only like GOOD stuff" stage? Popular evil girl tropes are almost entirely fictionalized, because generally IRL most popular girls are nice people, but these movies will never have that. (I also have a little pet theory that a lot of the people who work on these movies project their own rubbish HS experiences in writing high school characters, and the cycle continues)

@MsBrendalina6 жыл бұрын
I really wish the "Popular Bitch" trope would die. Most popular girls are popular because they're nice and have good personalities. And I knew a lot of popular girls in middle and high school who weren't even all that conventionally attractive; people just gravitated towards them because they were fun to be around. And, inversely, I knew of a lot of physically beautiful girls who didn't have boys eating out of their hand because they were either introverts or jerks. Not to say popular bullies don't exist. But these movies tend to paint pretty/popular girls in an unsettling, misogynistic light. And as an adult, you can see how a lot of these high school movies were written by bitter adult males who are projecting their hatred of chicks who spurned them in high school by portraying them as sluts/bitches/sociopaths/etc.

Gemm Furnier In my experience the nice people ARE the popular people. In high school movies there are these super nasty „hot“ queen bee bully girls who despite their prima donna complex and entitlement everyone loves and worships. I don’t know about others, but in my school the popular guys are either genuinely nice or at least fake a nice personality. You would never be popular if you were so openly mean like some queen bee or jock characters in movies are.
@hciapetus12515 жыл бұрын
Through my experience, the popular (jocks) usually won cause the only people who voted were them, or the outsiders that the popular teens were nice to. Everyone else didn’t care enough to vote or would write in their own candidate.

Ok seriously?? No actual school has these 1980s stereotypes! Popular people are not worshipped, nerds aren't given nick-names and made fun of in front of the whole school, and there is NOT that much drama between human beings. My gosh, just get someone who's actually been to school to direct it. People are more likely to bust out singing "we're all in this together" in the gym than tar and feather someone in a photo booth.

it's just a tactic to get a more relatable main character. Most of the people watching this show aren't popular and the assumed notion that they're fanbases are made up of kids who feel alienated because they aren't popular. The most logical antagonist to that protagonist is those who are actually popular is to villify them and show them as assholes' whose only redeeming qualities are their surface level attractiveness and physical ability
@hannahjohnson43226 жыл бұрын

Wait, they're Jewish? Wow, okay. So, in truth, the Torah doesn't have anything prohibiting dating or premarital relations. That isn't to say the character's parents could've had a rule about him being a "good boy" but if the whole point is to make him the "Jewish kid" niche, then I sincerely have to question the directors' understanding of their own religion. I watched this movie on a whim when it dropped on Netflix and oh wooowww it was so bad. You didn't mention this, but personally, the worst part was when they had the main dude explain to the girl and us, the audience, the premise of beloved anime Fullmetal Alchemist. I love that show, I enjoyed it a lot as a kid, but I was SO EMBARRASSED listening to this dude talk about it and THEY DIDN'T EVEN FADE OUT OR CUT TO A DIFFERENT SCENE he legit EXPLAINS the show for maybe an entire minute and I hate this word but I cringed myself halfway to death. It was awful. And honestly, I have to disagree with you on 18:39 I think he has a pretty valid personal grievance considering they were childhood friends and she abandons him when he needed her. As a friend, one she's known for so long, she actually does have a responsibility to stand up for him because that's what you do for friends. That's actually what you should do for strangers, but not everyone is capable of it, so AT THE VERY LEAST stand up for your childhood friends. And while I don't think people are ALWAYS as bad as abusers when they let abuse slide, I think they're very close. Especially people in positions of power, like the girl, who was really popular and could've helped him considering being in 1 photo of her made him popular in the movie. Like, she could've done something, she just chose not to and that's pretty fucked up. Sorry, this is probably more thought that this movie requires, but I'm a firm believer of doing the right thing when you're in the position to.

I half disagree with you--I think she had the responsibility to stand BY him, not stand UP FOR him. I think it was his own job to stand up for himself, but she shouldn't have ditched him, and she should have told her friends to stop being jerks to her friend, and in that way she could have stood up for him. But she definitely shouldn't have abandoned him for the "cool" people.

What bothered me was that the protagonist was the exact same as the antagonists and then she ruins THEIR PROM like wtf you got cheated on and now your ruining so many innocent people’s prom it bothered me soooo much
@tonypeppermint53296 жыл бұрын
Andrea Alexandra Oh yeah. The antagonists are better characters and the characterization in this movie was shit.

The only reason there was applause at my school was to annoy the teachers. The students would just clap out of nowhere and it would get the teachers about 10 minutes to quiet us down.

the girl from starstruck deserves better than this movie. like, a sequel to starstruck, for instance.

It hurts to see Superwoman as that character in this movie. I love her. Also the fact it was compared to Mean Girls is killing me inside. How dare they?
@nattysue25736 жыл бұрын
Rachel Colucci i think the part where the m&ms walk down the hall and that one guy says they are called the m&ms because blah blah blah is supposed to be the part it relates to mean girls. which offends me even more tbh

It's actually a massive relief to know that US High Schools aren't like this, I've seen so many movies about your schools that I honestly thought there were way too many for it not to based on some truth.

I mean bullying exists of course, and there are some obnoxious girls... but in reality high school isn't really like that, homework makes it bad not kids lol
@halos.16 жыл бұрын
Lol, as a girl in the USA, even I thought our high schools were like this growing up. Once I actually got there I was so confused, but relieved, to see that it's nothing like the movies at all

In high school everyone just stayed in their groups and that doesn’t mean “goths/emo” or “cheerleader/football player” it’s basically just your friend group
