Absolute monster. The finesse. The musicality. The constant flow of ideas. The originality. The personality. The intellect. The humor. It just goes on and on how deep this guy goes.

I had the honor of sharing an evening with Mr. Lage and his current line-up, which includes the monstrous Jorge Roeder and Kenny Wollesen, at a really cool live venue in Atlanta called Vinyl back in December of 2021. He was touring his debut album on Blue Note, "Squint." Knowing he would never wind up in my backyard, I had to go see him, so I impetuously booked a flight and multiple nights in a hotel close to the venue. He did not disappoint. The whole vibe was an awakening of sorts. The amount of music he made with his trio without any light or sound show of any sort, just reminds one how deep you can explore the possibilities of 12 notes.

Missed his tour due to work. Next time I will fly pretty much anywhere in the US to see him.

Julian is truly unique amongst jazz-players; his phrasing is so deliciously off-kilter, the runs twisting and turning so unexpectedly. Ive only heard 4 songs, and Im a fan!

Julian's pure pleasure at Kenny's inventiveness at 4:49 - 4:57 is so joyful in the moment, like a kid stealing a peak at Santa Claus. These three were just so on it together for these years. and Scott C is far more than just solid despite the histrionics of the other two, he takes his creative charge as soon as, and as long as, he fits. They are all flying!

Been watching these guys daily for about a month now on YT but only just came across this specific video. It's the first time I've seen the drummer let it rip. Didn't know he had it in him. In fact, Julian let it go quite a bit as well. There's so much to unpack but once again I'm blown away by the dynamics and his body language while he plays.

I know this video is old, but can someone help me understand what the Tone Hammer 500 is doing? That's a bass amp head. Surely Julian isn't using a bass amp... is the upright somehow being fed into the amp?
@SerpenteMacaco6 жыл бұрын
This might not be the best place to ask, but I was wondering: his tone seems to be just guitar plugged directly into amp, no pedals. Is that really the case?
@lucaserikadams6 жыл бұрын
There is a new video from premier guitar I think about his very small "board." He uses like three pedals but they are essentially used as a boost, small amount of reverb, and like a preamp/eq.

Yeah that was my thought, perhaps a sponsorship arrangement was sought & denied, or terminated; I also know that some performers will do this to try to attract sponsorship -- "people could have been seeing your logo." It's also been a common thing to do among punk & underground bands since the 80s -- kind of a "we don't want your sponsorship" sort of thing, trying to prove they haven't sold out; but it seems odd for Julian to have this motivation -- but who knows.
